  1. Cassandra Wilson - Newyorker In A Sentimental Mood [JAL Strato Sound, Japan 1985] Perfect for a sunny Sunday evening. Wondering if our other resident Cassandra fan @jazzbo knows this one? A recent discovery for me.
  2. I'm still to listen to 29! Will rectify that now
  3. Sorry, not for me @Pim mind you I did come to that conclusion about 20 years ago so maybe I should give it another try I know I'm in a very small minority but I find the Tyner Milestones lack light and shade, they are all a bit full on and overly robust, almost as if they're trying to prove something. But I should revisit. I saw him play a couple of times in the 90s in a trio and he was fabulous Edit to add: I do like Sama Layuca a lot
  4. Me too. Long time favourite
  5. I think it's pretty clear from the initial post onwards which John Marshall we're remembering with such affection. Only one played with Nucleus and Soft Machine after all
  6. Poetry to minimal Jazz backing, some percussion and sax. Works really well, enough music to make it not just poetry and enough poetry to command attention. Completely new to me, punt from HJ. Some short samples on their site And only 30 minutes long so doesn't overstay its welcome. There's another just been reissued which I may go for now
  7. Irreversible Entanglements - Protect The Light [Impulse, 2023]
  8. I had no idea that Chico's 'The Master' existed and then was very surprised to discover he's playing with Little Feat (who I liked a lot in my younger days) on it. Gave it some online sampling, still undecided
  9. Always fancied a copy of that one Here now Sarah Webster Fabio - Together To The Tune Of Coltrane's "Equinox" [Folkways Records, 2023 RE]
  10. Anthony Braxton - Five Pieces 1975 [Arista 1975] Companion piece, and the best Braxton cover picture which always makes me think of this cover You're right there but side one just explodes out of the blocks with such joie de vivre
  11. Yes, sorry... Meanwhile, playing now Anthony Braxton - New York, Fall 1974 [Arista, 1975] This is such a very great album, blew me away when I first heard it and it still sounds vital today. What a quartet.
  12. But some divergence is healthy, for instance I've never got on with Tyner's Milstones 😄
  13. That's good from memory
  14. Thanks T.D. I have the second but the first is new to me
  15. They sound great, which albums are they?
  16. There's this one which is very good https://www.discogs.com/master/346409-Hideo-Shiraki-Quintet-3-Koto-Girls-Sakura-Sakura And this, just outside your period https://www.discogs.com/master/799796-HinoKikuchi-Quintet-HinoKikuchi-Quintet
  17. This is referenced way up thread https://www.amazon.co.uk/Blue-Nippon-Authenticating-Jazz-Japan-ebook/dp/B00EDIWUF8 Looks interesting Edit to add: "usually despatched within 6 to 7 months" 😁
  18. The guilt, the guilt... This is just in your date range and it's on its way to me even before the your current intervention https://www.discogs.com/master/830694-Nobuo-Hara-His-Sharps-And-Flats-Meets-Hōzan-Yamamoto-New-Jazz-In-Japan-日本のニュージャズ Yes, that's very good. I picked up a copy soon after Rooster's recommendation
  19. I don't know the Yagi either and will look for it I fear the revival of this thread could get expensive...
  20. Online sources including Wikipedia entry and Gilles Peterson showing Julian Bahula died earlier this week. I remember Jabula Spear, his band with Dudu Pukwana and appearances at Anti-Apartheid rallies. Recently I'd discovered his work with Malombo Jazz and Malombo Jazz Makers through some excellent reissues https://youtu.be/273tcKjo_FM?feature=shared
  21. Nice one Berne used to be a regular visitor to the Vortex and I saw some great shows with various bands. Doesn't come over here now, like so many others.
  22. Brotzmann/Van Hove/Bennink - s/t [FMP, Germany 1973]
