  1. Here's a question I've always wanted to ask these zealots: which is worse: a gay couple who adopted two Guatemalen (sp?) girls and bring them to church and Sunday School every Sunday? Or a hetero couple who don't attend church except maybe Easter and Christmas? (The first situation is a reality, BTW. I'm sure the second one is as well; but the couple in the first situation and their kids are dear friends of mine) Just to take this from a philosophical angle, if both situations are inherently problematic according to the common rules or guidelines on which they are being judged, does it really matter which is worse? If so, then does that justify or make right the situation that is judged less problematic? That requires more thinking than most zealots are capable of. Did that say "the lesser of two evils is still evil"? edit - Mikelz' response, not your question.
  2. Agree w/Dave's comments! Happy Birthday!
  3. Rest in Peace, Steve.
  4. I haven't heard any of those. Any particular recommendations? Guy I started a Thirsty Ear Corner a while back, some worthwhile recommendations were offered up to me in there.
  5. The Truffaz recommendation also made me think of Nils Petter Molvaer, who's put out some interesting releases on ECM and now Thirsty Ear, among other places. Worth a check!
  6. Read an interesting comment over on the Hoffman board that I either didn't know or had long forgotten - the best man at Boyle's wedding was none other than John Lennon!
  7. no Nolan Ryan? I still remember being upset when he "jumped ship" from Houston and headed up to the Rangers.
  8. RIP Peter. Young Frankenstein remains his defining moment to me, but he also gave a fine performance as the racist father in Monster's Ball, too.
  9. Yes, that whole "we don't accept genres...it's all music" is just a drag when it comes to actually LOOKING for stuff. Unless you have time to go from A to Z in every genre of music in the world, from beginning of the store to the end, you're screwed. Of course, Waterloo mainly just sells local singer songwriter garbage out the ying yang along with the Los Lonely Boys collection . A-frickin'-MEN!!!! About ten years ago, I remember part of the reason I looked forward to going to Austin was for the record stores. With all the small record stores (Sound Exchange, and there was this other place right off Guadalupe that was in this reconstructed house) and Tower gone, going to Austin just for the music stores is a thing of the past. I'm coming down there this weekend. Has this situation changed? Or is the best/only place to find vinyl in Austin at the various Half Price Books stores? Cheapo Discs (on Lamar, around 9th or 10th) has some vinyl, but I'm not really sure about their selection - I haven't browsed their vinyl in quite a while. Probably worth a stop just to check it out though. PS - Was the place in the reconstructed house off of Guadalupe called "Technophilia"? I used to shop there, and it was pretty cool back in the day.
  10. I don't keep up with my Astros too much during the offseason, but know that they lost Pettite, and have apparently picked up both Carlos Lee and Jason Jennings. Not sure about Lee or Jennings too much - do they bring anything worthwhile to the table? One write up about lee said he's overweight. Jennings' stats didn't impress me much, but he is the winningest Rockie ever or something, for what that's worth.
  11. The album version of "Julia" is beautiful. Doesn't really fit in with the rest of the music, but it's a standout for sure. I'd love to see this group live! Aggie = jealous of both Rachel & JoeG!
  12. Totally unrelated, but some of these made me laugh as hard as this courtroom joke, involving a child: Q: And lastly, Gary, all your responses must be oral, O.K.? A: Oral. Q: How old are you? A: Oral.
  13. Aggie is the 'Tree man in these parts. Thanks gents! I know this band isn't for everyone, but if they hit you, they hit you hard. Much like Monday Michiru in that respect, I think.
  14. ....the 55 gallon drum of Listen-O-Matic air is in the mail, Free...... enjoy!
  15. If you plan to do this, you might want to do it quickly. Their prices are going up $1.00 per disc on January 1st, so box sets will go up accordingly. Not really a big deal, but if you have a bunch that you want now, better to order in the next couple of weeks and save a few bucks.
  16. Celeb Jeopardy on Youtube ...not sure how long these clips will be on there, but there's a number of them...
  17. yourmusic is a separate "club" run by the BMG Music Club. Essentially the same inventory.
  18. "...I'll take "The Rapist" for $200, Alex."
  19. Now, to me, this is a great band. I posted here a few weeks ago that I've been picking up a number of the "Instant Live" 3 CD releases that were recorded on the bands recent tour. Yes, Osby and Sco are definitely part of the band. The "Instant Live" CDs that I have with Sco find him amazingly well integrated into the band. The two-guitar jams that I've heard are great. Check out the Nashville show. Osby seemed to take a little longer to fit it but toward the end of the tour was really contributing. And I think I actually like some of the "Instant Live" CDs better than the Warfield release (although that's fine too). I guess I'm a fan... I'm really enjoying this Warfield release! Joan Osborne is a WONDERFUL singer for this material. And Scofield is very nice in this setting as well. Osby doesn't seem to fit in as well, at least at this particular show. Going to have to hunt down that Nashville show I think. Thanks for the recommendation, trane123.
  20. Some do and some don't.
  21. You know, there's a much cheaper method for acquiring Listen-O-Matic air. Do what I do. Get yourself a 55 gallon metal drum. Preferably without any dents. Take it to your local Circuit City store, and walk into the speaker demo room. You must wait until all other occupants have left the room, whereupon you can open the lid, hoist the drum up in the air, and spin around, thereby filling it with Circuit City's Listen-O-Matic air. Cap lid on 55 gallon drum and depart Circuit City. Be careful not to be stopped by the guys in the red shirts. Once home, you can uncork your 55 gallon drum and let the Listen-O-Matic air fill your listening room. Of course, it will mingle with the normal air molecules in your room, causing about a 10-20% loss of quality, but in the long run you have saved most of the $1,999.95.
  22. See first post in this thread for the song title.
  23. You missed Jackie McLean's "Demon's Dance". Unless someone else picked it up earlier and I overlooked it. But in any case, YOU still missed it. Oops! Um....well...er....I have the non-RVG issue, yeah that's the ticket, that's why I overlooked it!
  24. Lee Morgan - City Lights Horace Silver - Doin' the Thing Trio Beyond - Saudades Geri Allen - Timeless Portraits and Dreams (w/bonus disc) Miles Davis - Cool and Collected (yet another compilation) R.E.M. - And I Feel Fine (Best of IRS Years 1982-1987) edit - there are a number of BN's on BMG's page, so I'm guess these will also show up at yourmusic shortly.
  25. Luckily, I bought a Bose Acoustic-Master Lava Lamp (suggested retail price $499.99), which soaks up all non-audible sound waves, thereby enabling the audible ones to be more fully enjoyed by my ears. Much better use of my money than socket plates.
