Jack the cat chases black bear up tree WEST MILFORD, N.J. - A black bear picked the wrong yard for a jaunt, running into a territorial tabby who ran the furry beast up a tree — twice. Jack, a 15-pound orange and white cat, keeps a close vigil on his property, often chasing small animals, but his owners and neighbors say his latest escapade was surprising. "We used to joke, 'Jack's on duty,' never knowing he'd go after a bear," owner Donna Dickey told The Star-Ledger of Newark for Friday's editions. Neighbor Suzanne Giovanetti first spotted Jack's accomplishment after her husband saw a bear climb a tree on the edge of their northern New Jersey property on Sunday. Giovanetti thought Jack was simply looking up at the bear, but soon realized the much larger animal was afraid of the hissing cat. After about 15 minutes, the bear descended and tried to run away, but Jack chased it up another tree. Dickey, who feared for her cat, then called Jack home and the bear scurried back to the woods. "He doesn't want anybody in his yard," Dickey said. Bear sightings are not unusual in West Milford, which experts consider one of the state's most bear-populated areas.

This just arrived yesterday, and I'm on my first spin. VERY nice! I can understand that those who don't care for Sco aren't going to get into this, but I think it's a great performance, and a great recording. And it doesn't seem like something that would typically come out on ECM to me, either (except for maybe the clarity in the recording). A worthy tribute to Lifetime!

Anybody have this one? I've picked it up a couple of times and almost bought it, and always put it back for some reason. Looks interesting.

For anyone interested, I just recently heard that Porcupine Tree will be coming back for a VERY brief U.S. tour in the fall. This is apparently in support of their upcoming live DVD. If so, that's very sad to hear. Roughly half the roster lineup is what I'd consider *not jazz*. Dumping Osby further degrades the ratio. I'm wondering whether they still have Stefon Harris, Terence Blanchard, and Jason Moran on their roster too.

I think about half of them ended up on the Tom's Album release, which was basically remixes or alternate versions of this song by various artists (R.E.M. included). PS I have the R.E.M. version on the original source concert (performing as Bingo Hand Job in a promotional acoustic show in 1991 I believe), and it was pretty much an impromptu joke, that somehow got an official release on Tom's Album.

I found it funny that you were pleading to keep politics out of one thing, when at the same time gratuitously inserting it into another. edit - i'm not trying to be confrontational either. Just an observation, one I found humor in.

That wasn't really the point I was getting at, but that's cool. I read some of the political threads and make the occasional post there. Just surprised me to see that comment coming from you.

How is this different than "Please keep religion (and politics for that matter) off of jazz bulletin boards. It's the only place left where people of all faiths, political persuasions, or sexual orientations can come together and just enjoy jazz talk." You do realize the irony involved when it's you of all people asking to keep politics out of something that isn't inherently political...

Singer Billy Preston dead at 59 PHOENIX, Arizona (AP) -- Billy Preston, the exuberant keyboardist who landed dream gigs with the Beatles and the Rolling Stones and enjoyed his own series of hit singles, including "Outta Space" and "Nothing From Nothing," died Tuesday at 59. Preston's longtime manager, Joyce Moore, said Preston had been in a coma since November in a care facility and was taken to a hospital in Scottsdale, Arizona, Saturday after his condition deteriorated. "He had a very, very beautiful last few hours and a really beautiful passing," Moore said by telephone from Germany. "He went home good." Preston had battled chronic kidney failure, and he received a kidney transplant in 2002. But the kidney failed and he has been on dialysis ever since, Moore said earlier this year. Known for his big smile and towering Afro, Preston was a teen prodigy on the piano and organ, and lent his gospel-tinged touch to classics such as the Beatles' "Get Back" and the Stones' "Can't You Hear Me Knocking?" He broke out as a solo artist in the 1970s, winning a best instrumental Grammy in 1973 for "Outta Space," and scoring other hits with "Will It Go 'Round In Circles," "Nothing From Nothing" and "With You I'm Born Again," a duet with Syreeta Wright. He also wrote Joe Cocker's weeper, "You Are So Beautiful," and co-wrote with Quincy Jones the score for 1970 movie "They Call Me Mr. Tibbs." Other achievements included being a musical guest on the 1975 debut of "Saturday Night Live," and having a song named after him by Miles Davis. Among his film credits: "Blues Brothers 2000" and "Sgt. Harrison himself quit at one point, walking out on camera after arguing with Paul McCartney. Preston not only inspired the Beatles to get along -- Harrison likened his effect to a feuding family staying on its best behavior in front of a guest -- but contributed a light, bluesy solo to "Get Back," performing the song with the band on its legendary "roof top" concert, the last time the Beatles played live. He was one of many sometimes labeled "The Fifth Beatle." Preston remained close to Harrison and performed at Harrison's all-star charity event, "The Concert for Bangladesh" and at the "Concert for George," a tribute to Harrison, who died of cancer in 2001. He played on solo records by Harrison, Ringo Starr and John Lennon. Preston also toured and recorded extensively with the Rolling Stones, playing on such classic albums as "Sticky Fingers" and "Exile on Main Street." In the mid-'70s, he parted from the Stones, reportedly unhappy over not getting proper credit for "Melody" and other songs. He reunited with the band in 1997 on its "Bridges to Babylon" record. The Mavs were down 51-39 at the half. That suggests that they were playing defense? They had one good quarter defensively yesterday, the 3rd quarter, in which they held the Suns to 15 points. Otherwise their defense didn't look that great to me. Will be an interesting matchup vs. the Heat to be sure!

Anybody notice that Blue Note has a new Street Team. There's a link on their website for The Messengers site. It's interesting, because they seem to be pimping their non-jazz music more than the jazz stuff. The Little Willies, Wood Bros, Richard Julian, Amos Lee, Raul Midon, Anoushka Shankar (isn't her dad someone famous?), Brisa Roche, Robert Glasper, & Mutlu. That's who they're pushing. Granted, it's for Angel & Manhattan Records too, but man, they seem to be turning their back on their "real" jazz offerings for this Street Team thing. PS - I tried to search for a previous Street Team thread or discussion, but the dang Search AIN'T working for me.
