That's why I troll the Austin/Dallas concert thread Actually, I have to drive to Austin for any jazz fixes anyway. Maybe I need to start coming up to Philly for your shows, y'all have some good ones!

Funny enough, my partial order from zweitausendeins in February showed up last week when I was out of town. The one box that they managed to ship to me, the Dexter Gordon Prestige set. The packaging was pretty beat up, but the box set itself seems fine. There was even "ein kleines Geschenk" with it, apologizing for their warehouse relocation and the delay in shipping my order. The present was a Modigliani book. Since the letter is dated 7 March, it was the first order they shipped me. The second one - shipped in April - also has yet to show up. I guess I can't complain too much, as they reimbursed me for the shipping costs originally, and later for the actual box set cost, and told me to keep it if it ever arrived. Overall a bad experience, but great customer service by 2001.

Spend a day or two just searching around this board (as if you didn't already know that). There are plenty of threads about just about every "new jazz" offering available. Look at the threads with year-end best of lists, the new release section, etc.

I caught Bill Frisell last night, at the Continental Club in Austin. GREAT show, and apparently a warm-up gig for his Bonnaroo date on Saturday. The band is his "New Quartet", comprised of Greg Leisz on pedal steel, Kenny Wolleson on drums, and David Pilch on bass. With the pedal steel, you would expect the Americana stuff to be prominent, and you'd be right. But they really pushed themselves, and gave a fine performance. The opener was a 20+ minute version of "Surfer Girl" that didn't reveal itself until at least 15 minutes in (unless I just wasn't ready for that and didn't catch it). They got a standing ovation at the end of the set, and played another 15 minute or so encore. I talked with them afterwards, and they seemed excited about the Bonnaroo thing. Kenny W. also told me there is a new Sex Mob CD coming out August 1st, and that it is "very different" and "very good". Looking forward to checking that out. If I had known about this Frisell show in advance, I would have posted it here, in the hopes of meeting up with any other board members (Clifford/Soulstream/Lon etc).

I've got a couple of things that Kale is on (the Tabla Beat Science discs, and a couple of Laswell cd's), and when I'm in the mood for that stuff, really enjoy them. Will have to check out his leader stuff.
