  1. I lost 1700 or so posts!! And I have a terrible avatar...what was I thinking???
  2. Thanks Brownie & Mark - I'm suspicious too, and won't be bidding. Alot of their autographs look new and fresh and very clear (not so much the Armstrong etc listing), almost as if they're coming off some autograph forging assembly line somewhere. But the volume of business they seem to do and their high approval rating kind of threw me.
  3. Has anybody purchased any items from this seller before? They seem to deal exclusively in autographed LP covers. They do a serious volume of business apparently, and have a high (99%+) feedback rating. I just wonder if the autographs are all authentic. Alot of them seem to be from similar sharpie markers, in various colors. But the actual autographs that I've looked at seem to look like the real deal. Here's one with Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughn, Max Roach, Benny Goodman, Earl Hines. It's at $152, with about 4 days to go. I'm curious because alot of these don't seem to get any bids, but others get some bidding wars.

    Paging Jim, paging Jim!
  5. I don't think Ginobili's was intentional, whereas Artest was (according to the league).

    Pat Martino

bump... Pat now has a thread over on AAJ where he's answering questions. Kinda cool! I still need to pick up his latest, the Wes tribute.
  7. I don't mean to turn this into a thread about the Battle of Verdun, according to the Douaumont Ossuary's website, 26,000,000 bombs (artillery shells) were dropped at Verdun alone ("6 bombs per square meter"). That's staggering to consider! So your figure of billions is likely close to being accurate. We now return you to Weizen's hanging chads.....
  8. I haven't pursued this, only because it seems easier (and more fun) to trade right here on this board, and not have to pay a middleman for that pleasure...
  9. Brownie - Yes, it was expressly forbidden to remove anything from the sites. However, we ran into at least 30 other groups (easily) of people wandering through the woods doing the same, while we were there. I can only imagine how much was taken by souvenir hunters over the years. We also ran across 4-5 large artillery shells that appeared to be intact, and tread very carefully around those. As far as bringing it home, it was relatively easy to drive across the border back into Germany, where I lived, at the time. Not as easy as today, since you still had to stop at the border crossing and show passports. The items were packaged in with the rest of my belongings (furniture, clothing, personal items, etc) in a large shipment from Germany to Texas in 1983 when I returned to attend college, and not hand-carried. I'm not sure I would attempt any of this at my age now, due to respect for history, the danger of the actual hunting around, and so forth. But when you are 16-17 years old, it was quite an adventure!
  10. I spent a weekend in Verdun, France in the early 80s with some buddies, and we took some metal detectors with us out into the trenches and woods. Dug up some WWI artifacts - a French cantine, one of those old wooden-handle styled hand grenades (the wood is long since gone, and the grenade itself has rusted through - no gunpowder), and a bullet or two from 1916. One of the other guys ended up with a rifle. This picture isn't mine, but shows a similar grenade body (the one on the left), a rifle, and some bullets. I believe most of the area has been completely cleared now, and what hasn't been cleared is probably much better secured from people wanting keepsakes.
  11. A couple things: Howard Roberts - Good Pickin's Jimmy Raney - Featuring Bob Brookmeyer Herb Ellis - Ellis in Wonderland Eddie Fisher - & the Next One Hundred Years Judy Garland - Definitive Collection Bing Crosby - Definitive Collection
  12. I won't understand why anyone in the U.S. wouldn't buy it from yourmusic.com. For your $70, you could get the Cellar Door box plus 6 other discs, no catches or commitments. It's a no-brainer.
  13. Thanks for the tip too, David A. I just followed David M's lead and ordered the Basie. Delivered price is $46.50, better than even the zweitausendeins price before shipping.
  14. ...update on my situation : I placed an order on February 22nd, for the following items: Wes Montgomery Riverside box Dexter Gordon Prestige box Count Basie Mosaic Roy Eldridge Mosaic Mercury Jazztet Mosaic Total order cost - about Euro 242.00, or roughly $300.00 (per disc cost of $6.66, which is how I justified it in my head). Anyway, due to their "storage warehouse relocation", it took them 3 weeks to send my order out, on March 11th (though they didn't confirm that for me until March 23rd). That order never showed up. On April 19, zweitausendeins finally agreed that the order was in fact missing, and informed me they would send a replacement order out. On Saturday I got an email notification that the order had been shipped. Hooray!!! However, on closer reading of the email, it seems that except for the Dexter Gordon box, all the other boxes are now sold out, so they aren't in my shipment. Yesterday I sent an email expressing my frustration and telling Stefan that I was angry about this whole order. I told him the shipping costs for this one box set are too high, for just one of the 5 box sets that I originally ordered (and that were AVAILABLE at the time I placed the order). He apologized and agreed to refund the shipping costs. That's nice, but I really WANTED those box sets.
  15. Great report, Paul. Makes me wish I could have been there!
  16. I'd recommend Lagavulin 16 Year Old too....try as mentioned.
  17. How many artwork/cover screw ups has BN had in the past 10 yrs? What with the Boobys, the Hardcock, this one. I don't know if I want to "upgrade" this title or not, and if I do decide to, don't know if I'd rather buy it this way or wait for the corrected version. Anyone think this one will be worth something 10 yrs from now?
  18. Many happy returns!!!!!

    Yo La Tengo

...up again. YLT have a new CD that's only available at their website, much like "Sounds of the Sounds of Science". This new one is called "Yo La Tengo is Murdering the Classics" "They said it shouldn't be done, but we did it anyway. Starting in 1996, we've made an annual visit to WFMU during their fundraising marathon. People who pledge money to the station while we're on get to make a request, and we try to play it. And guess what? It's not that easy. Yo La Tengo Is Murdering the Classics is a 70-minute compilation drawn from 1996-2003, a Best-of, or Best-of-the-Worst, or Worst-of-the-Best, or . . . oh, what's the use, it's dreadful. No song titles will be provided, don't ask. Beautiful cover art by Adrian Tomine. Order at your own risk. No refunds." I just ordered it. I found a list of the tunes on a newsgroup, and will post it if anyone's interested. Looks warped but interesting!!
  22. Happy Birthday, Mark!!! :rsly: And thank you for the wonderful art which hangs in my home! PS - good day for a birthday - it's Aggie Muster!
