Thanks for the replies. The Definitive liner notes (which I'd pretty much ignored as superficial biography) cleared this up further - the Gillespie & Gaillard sessions were originally on the Continental and BelTone labels, and later published by Savoy. Not sure where the Red Norvo came from, but it still includes Parker, so I won't complain. And the Carnegie Hall tracks are considered "bonus".

Ok, so yourmusic.com now offers the Parker Savoy & Dial Master Takes 3 disc set. I have just recently purchased the "Complete Dial Sessions Master Takes" and "Complete Savoy Masters" on Definitive Records. I know, I know...I feel morally conflicted by purchasing these, but they were cheap, and I figured if the sound quality was good, I'd replace them with the legitimate release anyway. So after a few spins, I decided the sound quality was just fine (and assume it's essentially identical to the Savoy & Dial Master Takes). However, the Definitive sets are 2 cds each, and full. So after comparing track lists, it appears the 3 disc set is missing the following: Dizzy Gillespie Sextet - 28 Feb 1945 - "Groovin High" - "All the Things You Are" - "Dizzy Atmosphere" Red Norvo and his Selected Sextet - 6 June 1945 - "Hallelujah" - "Get Happy" - "Slam Slam Blues" - "Congo Blues" Slim Gaillard Orchestra - 29 Dec 1945 - "Dizzy's Boogie" - "Flat Foot Floogie" - "Poppity Pop" - "Slim's Jam" Dizzy/Parker/J. Lewis/A. McKibbon/J. Harris - Carnegie Hall, 29 Sept 1947 - "A Night in Tunisia" - "Dizzy Atmosphere" - "Groovin' High" - "Confirmation" - "Koko" This confuses me. Why were these sessions left off the Master Takes box? I'm wondering if I shouldn't hang on to these Definitive sets, since they seem to be "more complete"?

Miles & Trane - So What

I've been surfing videos at youtube.com over the past few days, having recently discovered them. There are some interesting things there, both musically and otherwise. This one is a fun blast from the past: Herbie Hancock - Rockit live in 1984 And here's an interesting Monk video... Thelonious Monk 1966 Anybody else find any noteworthy there?

I love Power to Believe. I think it's their best studio disc since Discipline. Though I'm not sure there were THAT many contenders between the two. I like the ProjeKct stuff alot as well. And for anyone looking, Power to Believe is also available at yourmusic.com for $5.99.

...anyone want to volunteer to rip their sticker off to see what offensive language is underneath?

For $11.98, I'd still pick up the Trane, even if it's not your first priority. Might grow on you over time....or just hit you one day.

Dr. Richard Laverne: Do you mind If I sketch you? Katherine Jaqueneau: You want to sketch me? Dr. Richard Laverne: Nothing would please me more. Katherine Jaqueneau: Here? Dr. Richard Laverne: No, back at my apartment. Katherine Jaqueneau: Is it close? Dr. Richard Laverne: Yes. It's a 12-hour drive. Which, of course, feels like nothing when you're behind the wheel of the world's finest motorcar, Jag-u-ar. Katherine Jaqueneau: Sure. I'll go. Dr. Richard Laverne: But you must make your decision quickly. We don't have much time. Katherine Jaqueneau: Did you not just hear me? Dr. Richard Laverne: What did you say? Katherine Jaqueneau: I said I would go with you. Dr. Richard Laverne: There's only one problem. I don't know how to drive a stick. And I have no depth perception.

If everything was on the level, Mnytime passed away, according to his brother (Kareem I think?). I don't know what happened to his reptiles or his vast music collection...

Al, do you know if the remaster box (and therefore the follow-on individual discs) included the "Stop Making Sense" cd, or is it just the studio releases? I picked up the SMS reissue of that a year or two ago, when it came out with the additional 7 tracks. Be curious to see what's included on that, if it's reissued again. I also like the '04 reissue of "The Name of this Band is Talking Heads" alot.

Reinier - I'm curious, are you objecting to this thread because you don't care for the Talking Heads, or because they're not jazz? If you look back at the last 30 or so days in the Misc-Music forum, there are threads on Jimi Hendrix, Elvis, Ray Charles, Snoop Dogg, Richard Thompson, Allman Brothers, Root Doctor, Cat Power/Al Green, Brian May, Kenny G, Grateful Dead, King Crimson, and Dylan. None of these are jazz. There are current threads on non-jazz artists in the other forums as well. If you don't care for the Heads, that's cool. But we've never (as far as I know) limited discussion on this board to only jazz....
-
No offense Reinier, but there are a number of non-jazz music threads here. I hope that was a tongue-in-cheek comment! And the Talking Heads are real music!!

Okay, you've piqued my curiousity. What do you do that allows/causes you to travel so much each year? Where do you consider home? And what were you doing on a plane in 1979, when your birthdate is listed as 21 July 1983? ...And I'm kinda jealous of all the traveling, by the way.

There must be some sort of template that all these folks use. The messages are all almost exactly the same. "Hey, I just checked out some happenin' music from this new cat, insert name here. He's up and coming, and you'll hear lots more in the future. Just wanted to spread the word. It's insert descriptive - phat/smooth/groovin'/funky like you wouldn't believe! Peace!"

I don't understand why it's an "either/or" thing for some. Meaning you either enjoy the old music or the new. There's enough music for me to discover in all eras (and genres) that I still feel like a kid in a candy shop. I just recently picked up both a Walter Bishop Black Lion disc, and a Keith Rowe on Erstwhile (I'm not sure I understood that one, but it's sparked my curiousity to explore further as time/$ permits). Why can't we as listeners enjoy it all? I'm not ignoring the Rosenwinkel releases or the recent Trane/Parker/Monk etc releases.

I like both the Bernstein solo discs (alot) and the Sex Mob discs (quite a bit). I wouldn't treat the Sex Mob as any "deeper" music than say MMW or Bad Plus, and on that level they're quite fun.

Virginia Tech kicks Marcus Vick off football team By HANK KURZ Jr., AP Sports Writer January 6, 2006 RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Virginia Tech quarterback Marcus Vick was dismissed from the team Friday, the result of numerous legal transgressions and his unsportsmanlike conduct in the Gator Bowl. University president Charles Steger announced the dismissal on the same day that coach Frank Beamer met with Vick and his mother in their Hampton Roads home, the school said in a statement. Beamer informed them of the decision during the meeting. Vick, the younger brother of Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, was suspended from school in 2004 for several legal problems. The junior came under new and intense scrutiny this week after replays showed he stomped on the left calf of Louisville All-American defensive end Elvis Dumervil during the Jan. 2 bowl. No penalty was called on the play and Vick claimed its was accidental. He further hurt his cause by claiming to have apologized to Dumervil, the NCAA sacks leader, but the Louisville player said no such apology was ever offered. On Friday, it was revealed that Vick had been stopped for speeding and driving with a revoked or suspended license in Hampton on Dec. 17, Cpl. James West said. Vick's license had been taken away in August 2004 when he was cited for reckless driving and marijuana possession in New Kent County. Steger suspended Vick from school at that time, and warned that any additional problems would effectively end his time as a member of the Hokies' football team. "The university provided one last opportunity for Vick to become a citizen of the university and readmitted him in January 2005, with the proviso that any future problems would result in automatic dismissal from the team," Steger said Friday. Beamer said in a statement that he was disappointed with the outcome. "We wanted what's best for this football team and Marcus," he said. "I certainly wish him the best." School officials said in a statement that there would be no further comment until a news conference Saturday. Beamer, Steger and athletic director Jim Weaver, who said the stomping embarrassed the university, were all expected to attend. A telephone message left on Vick's cell phone was not immediately returned Friday, and his mother, Brenda Boddie, has an unlisted phone number. Vick said before the Hokies' 35-24 comeback victory in the Gator Bowl that he planned to return for his senior season. Now, his choices are to declare for the NFL Draft by the Jan. 15 deadline or transfer to a Division I-AA school so he can play next season. Vick entered this season knowing he would face hostility from opposing fans, mostly stemming from his drug arrest and another for serving alcohol to underage girls during the 2003 school year. He said he was ready for it, but reacted to chants of "rapist" and "child molester" at West Virginia on Oct. 1 by making an obscene gesture in the direction of the crowd. He met with Beamer following that incident and apologized to the team. In the ACC championship game against Florida State, he drew an unsportsmanlike conduct flag for spiking the ball after a touchdown run with the Hokies trailing, and following the 27-22 loss, walked by reporters after the game without commenting, saying he didn't have to. He finished that game 26-for-52 for 335 yards with one interception and a fumble near his goal line that teammate Duane Brown recovered. Vick threw one scoring pass and ran for two more touchdowns, but also was sacked six times for minus-35 yards. On the field, he was often dazzling, but sometimes tried to do too much. The Hokies started 8-0 and were No. 3 in the polls when they hosted Miami on Nov. 5. But Vick threw two interceptions and fumbled the ball away four times in a 27-7 loss. This season, he was runner-up to Wake Forest's Chris Barclay as the conference's offensive player of the year, and was voted the first team quarterback on the all-conference team. In 24 career games, the last 13 starts, Vick was 207-for-346 for 2,868 yards, 19 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. He also rushed 184 times for 492 yards and six TDs.
