  1. I'd guess the reviews are more from the jam band crowd myself....I think they appeal to folks in that group who are interested in checking out "jazz", more than hard core jazz fans. I have three trio cds of theirs, which I enjoy. I think they're creative within the framework of what they're doing, along the lines of MMW & Bad Plus. And they're pretty young guys I think, so might be interesting to see how they develop.
  2. That was before he became Sean Penn....Master Thespian!! I did enjoy his performance in Team America a bit:
  3. On the original thread from which this one was hatched, I made the following comment about used recordings: I disagree with your comment that the artist was "in no way" compensated for that CD/LP. That copy was originally purchased legitimately somewhere, and the artist/producer/company received due compensation at that time. At that point they no longer have (or should have) a say on who possesses ownership of that copy. If it changes hands multiple times (and individuals and/or used CD shops profit from it), that's the market at work. It doesn't change copyright status of that recording though, which is not possessed by the individual who purchases the CD. So that individual (or one down the line) doesn't have the right to copy the recording for close friends or the cyber-universe (at least in the U.S.). And again, ethically it's just plain wrong to do this. How is this ever incentive for artists to continue producing recordings that we the music lovers want? Taking money out of their hands and expecting them to appreciate it?
  4. I wonder how Kobe's big night will affect the Lakers for the rest of the season. Will his team-mates suddenly stop attempting to score, and simply wait for him to do so? If something along those lines happens, it could have a negative effect on team chemistry, overall scoring, and win-loss record. And I had completely forgotten about David Robinson's 71 point night vs. the Paper Clips. He doesn't seem like he fits on this list, or that he'd ever wanted to have such a "look at me" kind of night.
  5. Kobe has 81 pts versus the Raptors tonite!! 2nd most in NBA history....
  6. For what it's worth, it's not you, Chuck. The younger generation has a sense of entitlement to things they haven't earned (or pay for). Like Joe G said in another thread..."I think it all ties into the attitude, especially prevalent in America, that you can get something for nothing."
  7. up for air... I just recently received The Stone "Issue One", which is a benefit CD for the club (?) of the same name, that was started up by John Zorn. I'm really enjoying this disc alot - here's the lineup: John Zorn - sax Dave Douglas - trumpet Mike Patton - voice Rob Burger - organ/elec. piano Bill Laswell - bass Ben Perowsky - drums Zorn has too many releases for me to keep up with, but this one may well be one of my favorites. Mike Patton isn't all over it all the time, if that concerns anyone. The CD is on Tzadik and available through them or downtownmusicgallery.com. DMG has a limited edition that is numbered and signed by Zorn, if anyone's interested. Mine is #746 out of 1000 though, so if you want it, better order quick. The club has a very interesting calendar, and Henry Grimes/Roswell Rudd played there last night. It's a non-profit club, and all the proceeds from the performances go back to the musicians. A different musician is the "curator" each month, and is responsible for booking the performances. William Parker is curator this month, with Basya Schechter up next month.
  8. Great photographs, Mark! I love the first one.
  9. Ron, Ron - yours hasn't showed up yet? I've received 6 copies of that already, weeks ago. By some fluke when I was pre-ordering the "On The Corner & Beyond" 6 cd box, I guess they got confused with this box or something. The quality control at yourmusic has really gone downhill of late...
  10. Well, that means it should have arrived about 3 days ago. Have you checked your mailbox?
  11. Well, despite my account status as still "backordered", my copy of the Ike Quebec Conn arrived today!!!
  12. I like Douglas, but don't necessarily consider him "innovative" in the sense that is being discussed. I find him to be creative and prolific, and likes to try alot of different configurations. Don't see anything wrong with that. I also like Terence Blanchard, out of the current crop of trumpet players. Not sure he's innovative either. edited for typo.
  13. It still sounds like anecdotal evidence to me. People that are doing this say "lots of people i know do it" and "i buy music anyway so who cares if download it illegally". As Chuck asked, I'd like to see statistics that support your claim that downloading music illegally leads to increased sales of legal music. I'd love to have 100x more music than I own. But I won't download stuff illegally to make that happen. I'll buy stuff as I can, when I'm able to do so. Why not just walk into your local Best Buy and try to walk out with CD's without paying for them? How is it any different?
  14. Jazzmoose, Jazzmoose.... oops I mean Free for All, Free for All....
  15. bump... I just recently picked up both the "Live at the Bimhuis" discs and "Keystone". They're both keepers for me. Keystone grabbed me quicker upon first listen, which means that the Bimhuis set will probably end up being the one I like better of the two over the long haul. Two thumbs up!
  16. Alexander - Did you read the below comments about copyright? You still don't care that you're creating an additional copy of an artist's work, for which that artist receives no compensation? In the case of purchasing a used cd, i still maintain that the artist/producer received compensation for that copy. So what that ownership of that copy changed hands, and so what that there is an after-market that profits from the re-sale of that item.
  17. Extending that logic across the marketplace would mean that no used cars could be sold. Or used houses.
  18. There have been previous discussions about this on the board. Purchasing a used cd or lp is quite different. That used copy was (presumedly) legitimately purchased, and therefore royalties and income were duly paid. Ownership of that copy is transferred upon purchase. If 10,000 copies of that particular title were sold, the creators got what they were owed for those 10,000 copies. If every owner of a legitimate copy of a release that sold 10,000 copies created a copy for a friend, then there would be 20,000 copies in existence, for which the creators only account for 10,000. If you're a musician or a producer, is that ok to you?

  20. I would think burning copies of music that HE owns, for his own use, is up to him. MP3 copies, Ipod, backup cdr, compilation, whatever. But borrowing someone else's CD to burn a copy of it is different. That's where the creator of that music is being deprived of a sale. It's easy to dismiss this if you're the beneficiary of "free" music and aren't impacted negatively, but someone else is losing income because you chose to do that. Is it ok if I burn a copy of my AEC box for Alex, or anyone else? Would Chuck care?
  21. If the package they send you weighs less than 2 kilograms, Zweitausendeins' shipping to the U.S. is 22 Euros. If the package is over 2 kg, shipping is 32 Euros. Assuming the Evans box is less than 2 kg, it would cost you 46.99 Euros, or $56.90, shipped.
  22. Not only is it bad, it's illegal.
  23. When I got my first computer with a CD recorder a few years back, the only thing i could figure that it was good for was making compilation cds for my own use. I never considered blatantly copying any of my music for others. It doesn't seem right to me, not to mention anything about legalities. Hell, I'm having problems justifying my recent purchase of a couple of Definitive/Disconforme cd's. Maybe it is an age thing (I'm 40). Or maybe the concept of stealing intellectual property just doesn't bother some, I dunno.
  24. The first disc in my queue has been the Saluzzi/Christensen "Senderos", for a couple of months now. It gets backordered & cancelled, and they send me the next item. I don't mind, but I have a feeling I'll never get the Saluzzi. So this month, the second item in my queue is Gabor Szabo's "Spellbinder". This arrived in today's mail. However, checking my account, it was just shipped from yourmusic today! I have a feeling I'm going to be getting an extra copy of this in a few days.... edit - my Ike Quebec is still backordered too
