  1. NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW THAT!

    Julius Hemphill

Both labels come under the CAM Jazz banner now. Details of what's available can be found here: CAM Jazz
  3. Another obit in today's Independent. No mention of "prolix" here! Michael Garrick
  4. What dreadful news and so unexpected...to me at least. Michael Garrick and Gordon Beck both gone within a week...how sad.
  5. Me neither. Can be a bit disorganised...but then, can't we all!
  6. Has this been reissued on CD? Never head this though I have a dvd of a live gig of the band which is ok but I've always fancied the studio album. It did get released - on JMS not MPS - but is now OOP. It is available as a download at Amazon.com though.
  7. Yep, that's a good'un too!
  8. Better than I thought it was going to be.
  9. He's had a few albums released by Art of Life Records including one of him playing live at Appleby Jazz, I see! Gordon Beck on Art of Life Records I can definitely recommend "Experiments with Pops" & "Gyroscope".
  10. Sad news indeed. I last saw him several years ago at the Appleby Jazz Festival where he was absolutely outstanding playing a solo piano set. I must say however that he did not look very well, although I guess that's not uncommon with jazzmen of a certain age! ......and thanks for the recommendation, Brownie, I've just ordered it!
  11. Leeds had (has?) a thriving jazz scene up until a few years ago. Many of the visiting top acts would have a 'one-nighter' there as part of any European/British tour. Over the years I've seen Dave Holland, John Scofield, Andrew Hill, Geri Allen, Tomasz Stanko, Ken Vandermark, The Bad Plus and many other playing there. Since all the tours must have been heavily subsidised by the Arts Council, I suspect those days are over!
  12. A very nice tribute. Thanks for giving the link, aurelio.

Yep, you're right. Just as well I didn't get the set for those two albums!
  14. My copy of the new release finally arrived from DustyGroove this morning and what a treat it is! I've lived with this album for over 30 years but listening to this release was like hearing it for the first time again. It 'sounds' marvellous with every instrument so clearly defined that you can even hear the cello strings twanging on the track "Dogon A.D." This really does set a high standard for re-issues. Thank you VERY much for putting this out Jonathan and I look forward to hearing whatever releases you have planned for the future.
  15. Not a "solo" trombone record but here's another by Paul Rutherford I can highly recommend: Paul Rutherford - Gheim A 'desert island' record!
  16. Strange that this has never had a CD release. Anyone know why?
  17. E-mail sent for Paypal address. Update Payment sent!
  18. Yes, stuff from Chuck gets here VERY quickly. However, I'm still awaiting delivery of Julius Hemphill's "Dogon AD" from DustyGroove (also in Chicago) which I'm told was posted out to me on 11 October.
  19. Try asking Laurie Pepper (laurie@artpepper.net), she'll know!

On it's UK release date Amazon are showing the set as "temporarily out of stock"!
  21. Saw Louis Hayes with his "Cannonball Legacy Band" last week at Ronnie Scott's Club. Louis seemed a bit 'out-of-it' but played fine and managed to remember the names of his band members...just. Vincent Herring (alto sax) did most of the talking between numbers, he was excellent, as was Jeremy Pelt on trumpet. Here's a review by The Guardian's John Fordham who was present on the same night: Cannonball Tribute Band at Ronnie Scott's
  22. I agree. I've had mine for about a week now and it's been on my player for most of that time. The only minor gripe I do have is that the print on the cover reproductions is so small that the original notes are impossible to read. Still, the remastered sound is excellent.
  23. Since my original post I've been recommended to use some freeware called ImgBurn which seems to work fine. Problem solved, I guess! Thanks to everyone who replied.
  24. For many years now I have been using a very simple and straightforward piece of software called "Burrrn" to burn CD-Rs on my Windows XP PC. However I have recently upgraded my machine to a PC running Windows 7 and now find that Burrrn doesn't seem to work. I have also tried using EAC to burn the CD-R but that fails also. Windows Media Player works but I can't work out how to get it to burn the CD & track titles. Has anyone else encountered problems burning CD-Rs under Windows 7? If so can you recommend some good quality/easy to use software that WILL work?
  25. Likewise.....mine arrived this morning and it's been on my player all day. Wonderful music and very different from what I had expected. What other treasures have you got hidden in the cupboard, Chuck?
