Sad news. Heaven's getting a lot of great bass players up there as of late. And NO, you can't have Richard Davis yet.

Here's a new website that a good friend hipped me to. Apparently a friend of his in San Fran has started this. It's like CDBaby, however all the money goes to the artist. However, it IS after a $45.00 "annual signup fee." Here's a link Earbuzz Here's a P.S.... Was trying to figure out how it's "Free." Well, there's a $45.00 annual "signup" fee

My favorite part is that Joe Simpson is/was a big time southern preacher. -
Voices of the dead, or voices in your head?

I thought it was you Johnny because even though we hadn't met yet, I'd jumped on a time machine and met you before. But that was on Saturn in a past life. ....has I mentioned I'd be on a Sun Ra kick lately sprinkled with late night viewings of the "Twilight Zone." -
Voices of the dead, or voices in your head?

I'm not a believer in anything but, when my wife and I first got married we lived in a small, old woodframe house in Dallas. These are a few of the odd things that occurred in that house. --I woke up in the middle of the night to find what appeared to be a home movie film being shown on the wall of my bedroom of a small white and brown dog running around in the backyard. --orbital, glowing lights appeared quite often in the hallway (my mother even saw these when she spent the night visiting) --a large "X" appeared on the carpet in the hallway and could not be removed with any sort of cleaning. --our kitchen floor completely bubbled up overnight as if there were water damage of some sort, but was completely dry. Contractor could not explain it in any way. --I used to hear music in the middle of the night quite often, but my wife could never here it. --My wife had a seizure there one night (a first), but in the morning we had to go the pharmacy and used the yellow pages phonebook to look up the listing. When we returned home, every page of the 1000+ page Dallas phone book we left on the coffee table had been very neatly folded in half. I'm not a believer in ghosts or phenomenon even now. However, I will say I experienced some strange things in that house that I can't explain. -
don't worry Jim, it's ain't really OUR Lee Morgan, some woman....

What's this session like? I've got a lot of Bobby and a lot of Herbie...don't listen to THAT much of either as a leader. Don't feel compelled to buy this unless it's considerabley different from other output.

11 tracks in all. One other thing....Bob Blumenthal mentioned in his new liner notes to JOS Vol 3 that Slightly Monkish had been covered by LONNIE Smith also on this Lenox and Seventh CD. Well, there is a tune by that name on there, but it's a totally different tune.....your bad Bob.

Well, I fell for it...couldn't resist. I bought Jimmy Smith at the Organ Vol. 3, and I'm glad I did. The sound is better and it gave me a chance to really focus in on some of this stuff more than I have in the past. There is some VERY incredible playing here. The whole CD is worth the price alone for "Slightly Monkish." I've heard this before, but for some reason it really caught me this time... To hear Smith tackling Monk so much with Slightly Monkish and Well, You Needn't is pretty incredible at this early stage in the game. Not until Larry Young's Monk's Dream did this happen again on the organ I believe (takes visionaries no doubt.)

Why no Space Shuttle discussion?
Soul Stream replied to Man with the Golden Arm's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Aren't the space shuttles just like a trucking company these days, hauling up com satallites and servicing the space station? When are we going to GO somewhere?! Hell, even the moon again would be nice. After all, doesn't human interest come into play anymore. NASA has just turned into another multi-zillion dollar corporation servicing other multimillion dollar corporations it seems. -
Are any pf the Mosaic Selects slated to go oop?
Soul Stream replied to Dmitry's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Mosaic slave Elves are released to search out every last Mosaic Select of that particular title, they are then taken back to a huge volcano and burned by Michael Cuscuna and the CEO of EBAY who are diabolically allied to ruin life for the few who now want the OOP title. -

I put this story into the "let's freak out for a week" catagory of 24 hour news rotation. Frankly, I'm tired of being targeted by the news people for "freakout" status every week. -
This is true, those w/Mobley and Smith aren't out on CD (although there are JRVGs of them) in the US. But, here we go with a second RECENT edition of Vol. 3! Who's running this show anyway, Crackhead Bob?

"The Duel" is just an anomoly in the Jimmy Smith catalog. Totally unihibited, unrestrained mastery of the instrument. It isn't really "out" in the jazz sense, more along the lines of Monk meets Bach. One of the all-time great organ cuts. Unbelievable what that man could do on a Hammond organ. And at the time of "The Duel," he hadn't even been playing organ THAT long....

I saw this in a local Border's yesterday. Surprisingly, the cover is entirely different than the one previously used on the Japanese vinyl and earlier CD. ← Yeah, the new cover sucks.

I just use the little Sony crap speakers I bought at Best Buy for like...15 or 20 bucks I guess. Use to use them on my computer, got a new computer w/speakers so....hooked my ol' Computer Sony's up to the Ipod and...walla...worky, worky. It ain't gonna hurt an ipod...it's like plugging in your headphones...no voltage going to the ipod from these things....
-
I do this all the time. Sounds great and a lot cheaper than the "ipod" speakers they want to sell you that do the same thing.
-
Yeah...McDuff's contribution was more in name recognition/sell some albums than actually being featured. He's sideman all the way here, and all for business.
-
I pretty much agree with Jim on this one. Although, don't put McDuff's contibution aside TOO much. The art of playing organ in this context is exactly that, an ART!!!!

Frank Hewitt - WE LOVED HIM (on smalls records)
Soul Stream replied to JSngry's topic in Recommendations
No slight was intended against those who did not study music. I would suggest that you do have some advanced concepts, good aesthetic intuitions, and a good tacit understanding that you got on your own, even if you didn't study. Consider that a talent. But also remember that for most of his life, Frank was a musician's musician, and his fans were mostly among the cats in the house. I've asked Chris Byars to join the thread. Right now, I'm awaiting his return from Japan. After he gets over his jet lag, he should be joining us. Luke ← cool, can't wait. -
Frank Hewitt - WE LOVED HIM (on smalls records)
Soul Stream replied to JSngry's topic in Recommendations
Actually, Chris had also remarked on that particular tune, so I asked him to elaborate on what was novel about it in his view. I could hear the modifications to the melody with the reharmonization, but Chris is one of the few people who understands Frank inside and out. What I posted was his reply to my question. But given how good a resource Chris is, I think I will ask him to talk to us at greater length about the deeper aspects of Hewitt's music. It is timely with the upcoming release of the Hewitt Quintet disk (Four Hundred Saturdays) on which Byars appears. It comes as no surprise to me that many of Hewitt's fans from this forum are -- obviously -- people with a music background and advanced ideas. The well-prepared are likely to discern more earlier on. Others are more likely to put down the disk before getting anywhere with it. Luke ← Luke, It would be great if you could get Chris to participate in this discussion of Frank and his music. Thanks for all your help and enlightenment.
