  1. Mailman is playing OK, the rest of LA are stinkin' up the joint!
  2. Sublimate your addictive cd buying into a more appropriate activity, like....porn! J/K. Maybe try something like a reinforcement schedule, one goal met= one cd. Sounds boring, but it works for some people. Also, the idea of driving by the record store, avoiding the online sites and sales can be a strength builder. Once you get through the hard part (not buying for a while), try listening to what you have really attentively, and you'll start to see what a great collection you're already sitting on!
  3. I saw Priester play a small show (I was w/ a fellow board member) about 4 months ago at the Bluemonk in Portland. He did a set w/ a piano player (only) and then another w/ a drummer and an occassional improv. dancer coming up. I wasn't expecting any be-bop or even anything resembling his work w/ Booker Little, Max Roach, etc..., but I found his stuff to be largely inaccessible. The piano player was nothing to write home about, that's for sure. There was one 15 minute (or so) segment in which Priester made unorthodox sounds acapella w/ his trombone, manipulating the mouthpiece, spit-valves, and such and most of it sounded like flatulence to me. Once the drummer got up they just improvised very freely, but somehow most of it just didn't float my boat. I met him after and gave him some artwork, which prompted a cool conversation about "making it" as an artist/musician. He was really cool and personable. I'd love to hear the ECM stuff.
  4. That sounds nice! Can't wait to see it. What kind of scanner do you use for lp's?
  5. I have too many jazz posters. Or too few walls. Not all are from shows...some of them include a Herbie Hancock and Freddie Hubbard at Hill Auditiorium, 1971 ish. I also have a Herbie poster from a Michigan show in 1973 w/ his Warner Bros. band, an Art Farmer poster, Donald byrd playing trumpet on a bus (W. Claxton), about 6 Miles posters, a Trane one, a Telluride Jazz Festival '93 signed by Cedar Walton, Billy Higgins Harold Land, James Moody, Mulgrew Miller, Brian Lynch, Steve Kuhn, et al. Too bad the print is done in pastels, but WTF. An a huge Bix print that I got at a thrift store. Somehow, I've only had one sarcastic remark about them from a very sarcastic friend. I tell myself it's not excessive.
  6. Yes! It was a female alto player. And not only would her solos be too long, but she would always solo first--right after the head. It was a collegiate combo that played out sometimes. I never said anything, as I felt it would just rock the boat. And the solos weren't that great.
  7. Shit, man. That really bites. May they end up in a ditch!
  8. Wow Noj! Those are some really hip paintings. I 'll bet that guy in the turbin got pretty hot sitting for an art class! Thanks rockefeller center.
  9. Thanks, fellas. Brass, I PM'd you. And Rooster, I checked out and like Azarra's stuff. I might try to contact him. Thanks Noj, and nope...I know zero about web design, actually. My site was put together by my neighbor, but he doesn't like doing the work, so I try not to involve him w/ it. Do you paint/draw jazzers, too?
  10. I was wondering if anyone out there w/ web design skills might be interested in doing a trade. The problem w/ my website (jazzdrawings.com) is that it is very low concept. I'm trying to generate some web sales and thought that maybe if I proposed a trade here that someone might be interested. I could take on a commission (your jazz hero, you playing, your wife, mistress, kids, pet, whatever), or use my existing work as trade bait. I can frame and mat it, too! If anyone is remotely interested, my work is up at the site...except for my latest one (a Bud Powell). Suggestions would be more than welcome, too. Thanks
  11. Late to this thread. Haven't read back yet...but my first concert was in '80, and it was Earth, Wind, and Fire. I was 11, and it fucking flOOred me. It was in the Salt Palace, in Salt Lake Ctiy, Utah.
  12. I dunno, but the one time I seriously "kicked" buying for a few weeks, the lack of a menacing addiction led to increased enjoyment of music that I already owned, and it felt great. I' m back to buying excessively, of course. B)
  13. Well, I picked up that "Selections from Golden Boy" for $20. (White label promo, NM--)It's really good, too. Thanks Bertrand, for the recommendation.
  14. Gotta disagree with ya' there, Kari. Even the guy in your avatar thinks Mick Jagger is a motherfucker. He said so in an interview about his musical debates w/ Wynton. Wankers?!?!
  15. Good Question. I'm still pondering unloading my BN TOCJ's/Jrvg's, if it gets good sound reports.
  16. That IS a great album. Someone should swoop!
  17. Dave Matthews couldn't grate much harder on my nerves. I remember hearing him for the first time, in my ex-wife's car...driving down to the courthouse to sign our divorce papers. I couldn't say anything because it was an emotional day, but it really felt like someone was taking a big explosive dump in my ears.
  18. I saw a vinyl copy of a Blakey record by the name of (something like) "Theme from Golden Boy", "Sountrack from Golden Boy" or some shit. Mogie was on it, but it was too expensive for me. Anyone hip to this one? Maybe it had Gilmore, too.
  19. How'z bout Wayne Shorter, or Herbie Nichols? or Trane?
  20. They look like the Time/Life Giants of Jazz lp box sets.
  21. I always thought that Hugh McCracken played that solo. But WTF, I could be wrong!??!
  22. I second that emotion!
  23. Donald Byrd "Groovin for Nat" also features Johnny Coles. It has some really good blowin'.
  24. My, what an O.C.D. bunch we are, us collectors...I think we could dedicate a whole category to categorization.
  25. It is on hold at my local co-op. $8 plus shipping if anyone needs it. Rare groove BN, I believe, with Shirley Scott. I have the lp. PM me.
