  1. Don't know if Brownie meant Art Pepper or Pepper Adams, but they're both instantly identifiable to me. Another Art is Tatum.
  2. It's interesting to me that almost all of the instantly identifiable players (at least to me) are from "earlier" generations. Doesn't matter if it's Ben, Hawk, Lester, Miles, Ornette, etc., etc.. Why don't as many of today's players have that quality?
  3. I have it. Excellent music. Basically I agree with Lon (Jazzbo).
  4. Not a problem. You should have both. Disclaimer: I've never let Powell's or Jarrett's "vocalizations" bother me.
  5. I've got all of them. I voted for the Coltrane. Plugged Nickel would have been my 2nd choice.
  6. I ran into Art Farmer & Jim Hall having lunch at a restaurant in New York when they had their quartet together (so you know how long ago that was).

    Charlie Haden

I really appreciate Haden also. This may be a strange comparison, but he sort of reminds me of Wilbur Ware on one side & William Parker on the other. Also his Liberation Music Orchestra should not be overlooked.
  8. Dusty Groove used to have The Golden Eight (TOCJ). You could check there.
  9. If you want a trio CD by 3 giants, get the recent 88's release Autumn Leaves. The trio is Hank Jones, Richard Davis & Elvin Jones. You'll have to pay Japanese prices (Sony has elected not to release this at this point), but it's worth it.
  10. I have all 3 of the Mosaic sets under discussion here & am mighty glad of it. The sound on all 3 is certainly satisfactory & mostly better than that.
  11. Ours is from Dish Network. Great picture. No weather problems.
  12. 1.) Sorry, but I still like Down Beat. 2.) I subscribe to Cadence & buy mainly Hat & Fresh Sounds CDs from them. Criss Cross CDs are actually cheaper at www.cheap-cds.com (although they don't always have everything). 3.) Not to be inconsistent, but I recently purchased Elmo Hope & Herb Geller Fresh Sounds CDs form Dusty Groove.
  13. What saves us here in New Mexico is Tom Guralnick & The Outpost Performance Space in Albuquerque. They bring in exciting performers. Prices are reasonable. Seats about 200, no smoking, no booze. Members get discounts on tickets. All in all a great place to hear jazz.

    Sep RVGs

    I agree with Ed Swinnich.
  15. I have all of these on CD. So - I'll save my money for some other items.
  16. While reading the last post (Berigan), I noticed the Chomsky quote at the bottom. Is this some sort of "ironic" reference? Please consider clarifying.
  17. This & related behavior is rampant in the NBA. If nothing else, Kobe is guilty of incredible stupidity.

    Phil Grenadier

Great CD. Definitely "talent deserving wider recognition"!!
  19. I see lots of movies, and Whale Rider is a great one. Off topic but for something very different go to see Winged Migration.
  20. They have the Anthony Brown Asian American Orchestra CDs - the Ellington & the Monk (with Steve Lacy). Their service is excellent & their e-mails are hilarious.
  21. Their error ratio is very high. However they are nice about trying to fix things. I eventually (& I do mean eventually) wound up with the Tatum Group set & the Pepper Galaxy for just under $60 US (including shipping). They essentialliy "ate" the cost of the Tatum because they sent it in error. My only actual disappointment in the end was that the Pepper has absolutely no printed info..
