jhoots - is that Subtextures? What's it like?
Yes it is.
Great quartet CD (Kimbrough, Ben Allison, Matt Wilson).
Starts with Andrew Hill's Cantarnos.
Includes 4 Horton originals & one by Frank Kimbrough. 2 classical interpretations (Messiaen & Chopin).
Fine playing by all.
I've said it before, I'll say it again.
I like 2 Christmas songs:
God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen - MJQ
We Three Kings - Roland Kirk (he calls it We Free Kings)
Probably would have to be a Conn. - Pepper Adams: Critic's Choice (Lee Katzman, Jimmy Rowles, Doug Watkins, Mel Lewis). Was on Pacific.
Has never been on CD as far as I know.
Things that have never been on CD in the U.S. (other than in the Mosaic boxes):
Andrew Hill: Andrew!!!!
Andrew Hill: Compulsion
Don Cherry: Where Is Brooklyn
I suppose they would more likely be Conns.
Vic Juris is excellent.
Someone gave me a CDr of a live session from late 2003 with Jeremy Steig (where's he been??) with Juris, Cameron Brown on bass & Billy Drummond on drums.
Nice stuff & Juris is outstanding.
Don't know if it'll ever see the light of day though.
