  1. Don't rub it in. I made my plans before the lineup was announced. Metheny is doing 4 or 5 shows prior to the big closing show and I'm not there for any of them. I think he's playing with Haden and also with the 80/81 crew plus a couple of others. If it wasn't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all.
  2. By the way, it's been a while since I listened to this set. Think I'll give 'er a spin tonight. One of the reasons I like jazz boards - nudges you to reaching for something that you haven't spun in a while.
  3. I'm there June 30th - July 4. It's a blast!
  4. Michel - going to the jazz festival? I've made my plans to be there from June 30 - July 4. I'm dissappointed a little in that I'm going to miss all the Pat Metheny performances. On topic, I'm okay with the limit. Happens all the time at the local supermarket, and there, they are only talking about consumables. Mosaics at the end of their run are unique when you take ebay into account.
  5. Is it true that Parker got the nickname Bird because he used to do a sort of "chirping" sound when he played?
  6. From $8 to $5. Just got the new catalog with the Slack and Richards Selects. Looks like they're finally realizing that the old shipping cost was not competitive.
  7. The new catalog featuring the Slack and Richards Selects arrived today. There must be some last minute snag. I'm pre-ordering both, FWIW. Both these guys will be new to me as well.
  8. FWIW, here's a review of the Basie set that appeared in the Buffalo News last week. Written by their jazz critic Jeff Simon He rated it 4 out of 4 stars.
  9. Way to go on the LP set. It's fantastic! Just this past week I picked up from Mosaic the remaing two Davis LP sets I didn't have - Blackhawk and the 63-64 sets. Man I wish Mosaic would do at least one pressing of vinyl of all their sets.
  10. Seemed to me that the Mosaic sales were a result of an attempt to better manage inventory, and yes, optimize cash flow. I'm guessing they have got the typical pattern of sales down to a science by now and I'm guessing it's big sales at the beginning of a release cycle followed by stagnation for months, then a jump in volume once it hits the running low status. There's no sense in pressing sets and have them occupy warehouse space when they don't sell as fast as new releases or endangered sets. I think the sales were intended to clear out stagnant inventory. Once that was accomplished, there's no need to incentivize sales as new releases and endangered sets sell themselves.
  11. Got all 3. I'm a big fan of Green from this period. This stuff has grown on me as I've more or less accepted the music for what it is, rather than what it is not. What it is, to me, is fun, funky, grooving music. I dig it and am not ashamed to admit it As an aside, I saw John Scofield's jam band 3 or 4 years ago at the Toronto Jazz Festival. It was a great show and if the hundreds of younger fans dancing was any indicator, it was certainly fun and entertaining. Several times throughout the performance I mentioned to the person formerly known as my wife, who was with me, that there was so much similarity between the grooves being laid down by Scofield at al and the Grant Green material of the late 60s and early 70s that I sstarted to understand why Green got so much respect from the acid jazzers and jam band crowd. It's interesting to me that they have subtitled these releases as "Original Jam Master" vol 1,2,3. The covers kick ass by the way.
  12. I admit it. I'm a big Gino Vannelli fan too. He played the Montreal Jazz Festival about 4 years ago supported by a bunch of French or French Canadian jazz musicians including Paul Brochu and Alain Caron of Uzeb. It was a kick ass show!
  13. Believe it or not - Basie Clef/Verve disc 7
  14. Different stroke for different folks. A very nice review and voicing of your opinions, btw. FWIW, I liked your style of dissent.
  15. Still find that I'm reserving Sunday mornings for older stuff. I've got quite a lot more sets now, but I really enjoy coffee and the paper and older jazz. These days, material like the the Billie Holiday Columbia set, Bunny Berigan, Stuff Smith, The Lester Young Verve, Prima/Manone, Charlie Parker make it to the play list.
  16. My last $4.99 per disc order from yourmusic.com: The Human League - Greatest Hits Thompson Twins - Greatest Hits Chris Botti - Midnight Without You Chris Botti - Night Sessions Sam Rivers - Fuschia Swing Song (Remastered) Chris Botti - When I Fall In Love Sam Rivers - Contours Clifford Brown - The Complete Blue Note & Pacific Jazz Recordings Antonio Carlos - Jobim The Man From Ipanema Ella Fitzgerald - The Complete Ella Fitzgerald Song Books Creedence Clearwater Revival - Creedence Clearwater Revival (Box Set) Jimmy Smith - Retrospective Various Artists - The Complete Norman Granz Jam Sessions Standard Miles Davis & John Coltrane - The Complete Columbia Recordings Led Zeppelin - Boxed Set The Guess Who - Running Back Thru Canada Grant Green - Retrospective 1961-1966 Stevie Ray Vaughan - The Essential Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble Don't anyone laugh at the Chris Botti selections. With my new status as a single male, I know I'll have to be introducing some unsuspecting woman into the world of jazz. I figure starting off with somethings like this might make the Sam Rivers stuff a little more palatable - someday
  17. Definitely worth picking up. Used or new. I very rarely use the "mandatory purchase" endorsement, just so you know. This record is a blast!
  18. Holy smokes! This record absolutely kicks ass. Soul with some pretty deep funk grooves, bluesy, psychedelic, somewhat "jazzy", and very 60ish - in the best way possible. I ordered this a while ago and it came to me along with the shipment of Grant Greens that I bought from CD Universe. I have not yet gotten to the Greens because Baby Huey has monopolized my player for the last few days. As mentioned above, there's a lot of styles evident but overall, it's soul - and some of the best I've heard. This disc must be played at ear busting decibel levels for full effect, BTW and IMO, is a mandatory purchase. Great, great stuff and a lot of fun I actually was hipped to this some time ago in the water records thread and finally decided to pull the trigger. Here's what Lon had to say about it: I liked it so much I thought I'd bring it up in its own thread. Besides, I'm very enthusiastic about what Water has been doing reissue-wise both in selection and packaging and it's nice to support them if this stuff is at all your cup of tea.

    Trash

Somewat related About 5 years ago now, I was looking for a piano so my older son could start piano lessons. One of my nephews called me one day and said he saw a piano in the classifieds for $1. I figured it had to be a joke or a hunk of junk, but when I called, the guy said that it was a nice upright piano in very good condition. He just wanted to get rid of it and wanted it to be used and in a good home. I told him about my son starting piano lessons and he said that he's hold it for me. A couple of hours later, my dad and I showed up to check the thing out. Fabulous condition. Looked great, played great, but needed a tuning. My father and I had to drag he thing down about 8 stairs and up into a van, but we did it. When the seller saw how hard we worked, he would not even take the $1. I got the piano tuned and the person who worked on it said it's probably worth $700 or $800. We've been using it ever since and I plan on keeping it for a good long time.
  20. I'd recommend leaving out the word "still"
  21. Did you ever see those nice hinged picture frames that sort of open like a book and have spots for several photos? Go through the photos of your wife and baby - pick the best, buy one of those frames and get to work. It's simple and will last the rest of her life.
