I'm sure it will have some interesting parts, but I don't agree with the basic premise. The Don Was thing today is not the same Blue Note we loved. That died a horrible death at the hands of United Artists. EMI Manhattan started this new thing, with the old name, in the mid-80's. They did do wonderful reissues of the old Blue Note for a time, I assume funded by the inexplicable Norah Jones revenue, but the new recordings by even the old names lacked the magic, and it just got worse. I mean, I really like Suzanne Vega, but she's not Blue Note, really, in the sense of the term I/we think of, and has no link to it apart from a label name.

BTW, Brenda and Patrice Holloway wrote "You've Made Me So Very Happy" as well as recording it. She was a great lost opportunity for Motown (some of it her own doing, apparently). Some wonderful material by her left in the can.

My mistake, Brenda's little sister was Patrice, not Loleatta.

Left to my own devices, I'll go to Lalah's father and Loleatta's big sister, though Lalah and especially Loleatta do each have their own merits.

CBS never even did one of those 2-CD "Essential" sets on Santamaria, which could have fit the bill nicely. IIRC, good Hubert Laws tenor playing on the superior bonus cuts on the Solomon Ilori - African High Life CD on Blue Note.

While I am sorry for the MCA fire, I'm glad it didn't occur in, say, 1986. At least a LOT made it onto CD.

Definitely his high water mark, and one of the greatest 80's albums.

Which was written by neither Percy Faith nor Carlos Santana. Nice paychecks for Peter Green and the estate of Gabor Szabo. Do we blame them? I also report to work every day, as I have for decades on end. I really like the part where they pay me every two weeks, and reasonably enjoy my work, even though I will have no more career breakthroughs coming. Also, rock artists can still be a great live experience long after they are not consistently pumping out meaningful new compositions. This is one of the most moving musical experiences for me (especially the DVD), recorded (ca. 1999) 15 years after I had ceased to much care about new Springsteen studio albums (I do like 'Lucky Town'). And part of the thrill of it was BECAUSE they were decades into the journey. This concert convinced me that being 50 would be just fine. A Neil Young concert I attended in the mid-2000's convinced me that being 60 would be just fine. There's value in that, at least for me.

I actually could use the Jimmy Smith set if found at a decent price. And the Ahmad Jamal.

I really like a good bit of the Dewey Bunnell material (including "...Horse...") myself, and they do a great version of Russ Ballard's "Cast the Spirit". And who can resist Ballard's "You Can Do Magic" by them? Not me.

That same series has a really good Archie Shepp Impulse set and a Jackie McLean Blue Note set that includes the awesome 'Jacknife'. Also a bunch of other classic Blue Note sets by the usual guys.

Loved him in the day, but the only thing he's done the past 25 years that fully works for me is the reunion with the original group. And this sure ain't that. But 'Caravanserai' will always be a desert Island disc for me.

Musically, actually liked the gris gris stuff best, but realize I'm best off not thinking too much about what it all means. Basically tuned out very soon after the "Right Place, Wrong Time" period. RIP. I do highly recommend this, seven remastered albums, everything up through 1974's Desitively Bonnaroo, available for about $30 on ebay and amazon.

Quite an interesting album, stays true to both Adams and ECM, a good trick. Not a half-bad rhythm section, and Kenny Wheeler on board. Not otherwise familiar with Sauer, but he acquits himself just fine.

Start with 'Asha' and then 'Treasures'. That will give you the prime work. And hope for 'Tori'.

Ah, the good old days. Four noteworthy acts on one bill, and the ticket was probably $5 or less. Quicksilver Messenger Service in their pre-Dino Valente mighty prime, Van freaking Morrison around the time of 'Astral Weeks', Blue Cheer blowing the roof off in their "Summertime Blues" commercial prime (they did more varied and interesting music a few albums later), and Clear Light, a very good, very interesting L.A. group with the eerie but thought-provoking "Mr. Blue". Sigh. Also a very cool poster!

So what did you end up getting her for her birthday?

And 'Elegia' comes out next month. Now we just need 'Tori', hoping maybe they'll do that one in September. 'Treasures' is a wonderful album, especially the awesome "Griot", where Cecil McBee is amazing.
