Appreciate everything and agree with much of what you have to say about WR/Vitous. But on this oddball little throwaway point, I have to say that I LOVE the group Brian Wilson worked with around the time of completing 'Smile'. Darian Sahanaja is brilliant in his work with Wilson (and his other group, the Wondermints, are pretty great), and the other members really "get" the music. 'Pet Sounds' and 'Smile' never had much to do with the Beach Boys apart from Wilson anyways, except as supplemental vocalists, and Sahanaia, Jeffrey Foskett, Scott Bennett, and Taylor Mills are stunning in their vocalizing with (and for) Wilson on the completed 'Smile'. The whole thing is a major miracle, both that it got done at all, and that it is as great as it is (especially the second movement). And one of the all-time great human redemption stories. No regrets here about it. I miss the idea (though not the 2004 reality) of Carl Wilson singing on it, but not of Mike Love, who hated it anyways.

10 CDs for $15 shipped - mystery lots
felser replied to clifford_thornton's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I can find homes for Derek Bailey CD's and the like, no need to avoid them in my package. Very happy with what you send me, enjoy trading some of them with other board members. -
I agree with all of that. Count me in. And the way the B.G.O. rolls, that may well be their plan, provided all four titles fit on two CD's.

I'm in if you allow repeaters from the previous sets. Will take as many of these as permitted! -
With Warren Haynes leading it, it's not gonna be shabby, either. He is a brilliant musician, and by far the most underrated Allman Bro. ever. I have some Gov't Mule live stuff that is s hair-raising.

Somebody needs to buy that Hancock set, 34 discs for $70, including some early 70's landmark work and some great VSOP stuff.

Are there any box bargains currently available?
felser replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I bought the set as a curiosity, and it far exceeded my expectations. Not just "country-rock", there are a lot of other things going on, and the musicianship and writing are very good. Well worth checking out. -
Lenox Avenue... is the most essential leader date he ever did IMO, and is included. Carpe dium.

Take out the master takes, which we already own, and there is about 2 CD's worth of rehearsal tapes on there. I'm not paying anywhere near $35 for that. That was what I meant about "price point". I've been "in" on the previous sets, but this is different.

Not familiar with them. What are some youtube cuts that are good intros?
-
This is something I'd like to hear once, so there is a price point I am in/out at.

Best reasonable offer in sale or trade. Four CD's of 2001 live recordings, held in a box hand-designed, hand-painted, and signed by Silva. PM if interested.

Savoy set coming from Mosaic
felser replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
He was born in 1921, so in his mid-30's by 1957. And he lived to be 92-93, so maybe didn't beat up his body too much.- 153 replies

And a set with the Savoy Post-bop stray stuff like Valdo Williams, Charles Moffett, and Marzette Watts. Actually, I guess a lot of that was produced by Dixon, along with the Dixon/Shepp sides. I'd jump on a box like that.- 153 replies

And there can be some value in that. But the days of being amazed at Mosaic are long gone. Nothing ever again on their label will match the excitement of something like the original Larry Young box or Grant Green box, with wonderful music I had heard about but never actually heard. Older and wiser.- 153 replies

Fascinating career, and seems like a life well-lived. 83 years old. I first heard him on the Elvin Jones "Illuminations" album when I picked that up out of a cutout bin at Woolworth's as a new listener, and I was hooked on him from his two features on that.

And I probably have most of it on the various CD issues, but this may be the best way to have it all going forward. Would likely clear out a lot of shelf space. Will really have to give it some thought. This would have been awesome 20-25 years ago.- 153 replies

Exactly where I am except that I sold the Young Mosaic (twice!), and live without 'Heaven on Earth', but keep hoping. Really surprised the recent Japanese series didn't include it.

Went through them. The usual suspects. And still no Larry Young "Heaven on Earth".
