  1. His best work was done with the group Trapeze early on. Talented guy, I actually preferred his singing to David Coverdale's in Deep Purple.
  2. That Earland is my favorite organ combo recording ever!
  3. PM sent on the Bud Powell set.

I received the box, have listened to all of the Borca material on it, and I like her playing (and her instrument). The box in whole is pretty great, as others had noted. I still have the 1975 loft trio set on the box left to listen to for the first time.
  5. That's $14 with shipping. Not worth it in the internet age to me, though it would likely pay for itself if you resell the set.

And this is pretty much my take on Irene Aebi (in fairness, I have not heard Borca). I can deal with the cello playing, but the vocalizing, not ever gonna happen for me.

Actually bought it from another board member last week and it is in the mail to me.

Well, I have the Cyrille box already (his Black Saint quartet dates are outstanding), so that may nix the Lyons box for me. I know that repetition is happening with other of these box sets also (Haden/Blackwell, if I remember).
  9. I also own it and really like it. I'm a fan of Allen's anyways, but this is specail.
  10. I love Lloyd's "Wild Man Dance", but in general, have been underwhelmed going all the way back to the mid-80's relaunch (or, for that matter, to the recordings made during UA era in the 70's, though they did some great catalog unearthing then). With the exception of the classic catalog items, the label has long ceased to have any special meaning to me.

How are his Black Saint recordings with Borka? Considering the 5 CD box of them.
  12. Schon Sounded great on III and Caravanserai. But he and Carlos are very different guitarists/musicians than they were in 1971-2 (Schon was only 17-18 then), and "the starmaking machinery behind the popular song" takes its toll for sure. I look forward to giving this a listen. I tried the link above to the album and couldn't get sufficient volume for some reason - I'll have to try again another time.
  13. But the meandering jamming was always a lot of the point! Largely serious about that.
  14. In case you're as lost as I was: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plymouth_Cranbrook
  15. Cars - The Elektra Years 6CD box set $13.99 Amazon Prime.
  16. Never knew that Grusin even existed. Wonder what else I'm missing out on!
  17. That one was my introduction to Adams and Pullen. And Changes 1/2, which came next, my introduction to Jack Walrath. The last GREAT Mingus band, and must-have recordings. I thought Adams was a fantastic player, but his own worst enemy at times in terms of material/approach. The blues singer act got old very fast for me, and John Scofield damages some of the Pullen/Adams stuff to my ears, but I own it all and don't plan to part with it.
  18. Yes, they are excellent.
  19. I thought that whole 'Caliente' album was fantastic, one of the best if not the best of that type of commercially album ever.
  20. The 'El Pampero' album was a landmark listening experience for me. It was the first thing I ever heard by him, and it has remained my Barbieri go-to album. I saw him at the Tower Theatre in Philly in the 70's, and maybe one other time at a smaller venue. RIP.
  21. I was able to pick up that and some of the other Catalyst LP's at Third Street Jazz back in the day, but they are long gone from my collection at this point. Wish they would come out on CD, especially this one and the Waldron/Peacock "First Encounter".
  22. It's Bill Hardman's "Politely", and I believe it's from the "Jazz Messengers 70" album with Hardman, Carlos Garnett, Joanne Brackeen, and Jan Arnett.
  23. I have repurchased a few over the years, as I find I'd rather spend the $4 or whatever than keep thinking about it. And the originals then do eventually turn up on mis-shelved somewhere.
  24. Thanks for the lead, picked up a version of the Animals album!
