  1. Well, that's an essay question, LOL!
  2. That's hindsight. Tyner had to still drive a cab to make ends meet, even while he was making those classic BN albums. The sales figures on the initial runs of some of the BN records would startle you on how low they were. My understanding is that Tina Brooks' classic 'True Blue' sold less than 1,000 copies on initial release, and that's why his other three albums stayed in the can for three decades. Thank Michael Cuscuna for the insight we have into the BN catalog and the exposure for some of the artists there. Agreed. the only ones that don't click for me are Feelin' The Spirit and Way Out West, and that's due to my (musical taste) aversion to the source material. I even like the 70's albums on BN quite a bit, and play the heavily arranged ones frequently.
  3. I'm with Dana on this one. IIRC, for example. those challenging early Andrew Hill records didn't sell at all. As for Green's output, the albums with Larry Young are not your typical "organ dates" - they were plenty challenging for the era. And 'Idle Moments', with Henderson/Hutcherson/Pearson, is widely considered a masterpiece. They released him in trio format, in quartet with piano, etc. Green's bad career move (in addition to being a heroin addict) was leaving BN for Verve, and he rectified that later on with his end of the decade return to BN.
  4. RIP, I fondly remember his work with Paul Butterfield, including the Woodstock appearance.
  5. Where do you put your Selects and other CD's?
  6. Was reissued on CD in 2013 in Japan for about five minutes, as usual for those Japanese reissues.
  7. The Moosicus 2CD set has a bonus album which is quite good: Gesprächsfetzen: 1 Gesprächsfetzen 14:59 2 Exhibit A 2:54 3 Babudah 7:25 4 Tomorrow Is The Beginning Of The End Of Yesterday 3:23 5 Aba 6:30 Marion Brown In Sommerhausen: 6 Dance No. 1 11:03 7 Exhibit B 3:32 8 The Sound Of A Song 7:56 9 Malipieros Midnight Theatre 8:29 10 Il Ne Chant Pas 6:15 11 Dance No. 2 8:12
  8. Doesnt sound atrocious to my ears, and excellent music. HatHut sometimes drops cuts to fit two albums onto one CD, so beware. And this is a 2CD set, so the Hat Hut will be missing a lot of the music.
  9. And you could store them on your shelves. I also liked them quite a bit, have kept many more of them (about half of what they issued) than of the big boxes (I have kept maybe a dozen of them). Especially thankful for the John Handy Select and the Charles Tolliver Selects.
  10. Me too, except for the grandparent part. Agreed, especially "Absolutions", which is still mind-melting 50+ years later.
  11. Also my understanding. In fact addressed in the 3CD set liner notes.
  12. I own both the 3CD and 8CD versions, which each have different purposes for me. 2LP set was the first jazz album I ever bought in 1972.
  13. Sounds wonderful, wish I was there.
  14. Of the later dates, the mysterious Live at Montreux album with Woody Shaw is spectacular.
  15. RIP, he did good work.
  16. For old-times sake. Quite enjoyable on its own terms, though mediocre (not poor) sound quality.
  17. Or Shazam time.
  18. I counted that as one of the fluff sessions, along with Natural Illusions and Linger Lane (which I actually sort of like - to me, it's Hutcherson's "CTI" album). Do you like this one? I do OK, though it is his post-accident more subdued playing.
  19. Which combined may have made a nice Select, though the half of them are various degrees of fluff (with Natural Illusions being the nadir). I'm not really fond of Head On as originally released, but some of the CD bonus material is outstanding. One unissued tune and seven unissued alternate takes (don't have details past that). Can't justify the price tag for that (though I would buy a single CD with all that on it). Cash, shelf space, and listening time are finite resources.
