What rock music are you listening to? Non-Jazz, Non-Classical.

Are there any box bargains currently available?

The sound is OK, they're no doubt straight MP3 transfers from the original CD releases according to Euro PD laws. The notes, discographical info, artwork, etc. are sorely lacking. Other Membran sets just randomly mix titles together. There are higher and lower quality Euro PD labels as far as those considerations (which are important to me). Fresh Sound is the gold standard, often far surpassing the quality of the original CD releases. Avid sets are nice. Enlightenment is basic, but they do have the original album covers, now have full personnel listings, they fill up the CD's (often exceeding 80 minutes) and their album groupings are very logical. Real Gone Jazz (now defunct, I believe) are on the same level as Enlightenments, with original album covers and personnel listings in place, but they have more random groupings of albums and often don't use the capacity of the CD wisely, plus they will often cut up an album between two CD's when there was no reason to do so. If the Fresh Sound releases are too expensive for you, I would go with Avid, Enlightenment, and Real Gone Jazz (who later renamed themselves Reel to Reel). Sound quality is generally acceptable on all of this stuff, because all the labels pull it from the same sources. -

They're junk, as is about everything from their parent label Membran, but very low cost. -
I don't much like the Silva and Burrell BYG's, overly dense, I can't make sense of them. I do like the Arthur Jones BYG quite a bit, was able to pick it up as a bonus on a Clifford Thornton reissue. Moncur's New Africa is the gem of the BYG catalog to me, but a different bag than what's being discussed here. I've heard parts of that Ric Colbeck album, would love to see it on CD.

That's also what I remember. He was, of course, on Milestone by the time it was released, but with Impulse when it was recorded. I don't know enough about the business to know how those things work - was it customary to seek permission for a vault release like that? I know that the horrid 'Dylan' album, put out by Columbia when he was with Asylum, was released "without permission", and was a sore point (though they obviously worked it out). Outtakes from 'Self Portrait', what a nauseating concept.

Gary Peacock and Roy Haynes? Quite the rhythm section!

I bought that CD as soon as it came out. Also owned the vinyl of 'There Will Be Another You' back in the day, and have always really liked it. Sound quality is totally acceptable.

What differences do you hear due to Stinson replacing Carter? Great article, btw.

That set remains the only CD source of the McLean 'Hipnosis' session from 1967!

Sold mine for a little over $200 on ebay about three years ago. Glad to pick this up for about 10% of that price! -
Mongo made Herbie Hancock a very rich jazz musician at a very young age.

Funny Funky Rib Crib has had previous CD reissues. Wonder if any of them are better?

I got to see him solo at Rosemont College a number of years ago, and ask him about his time with Archie Shepp. He was very engaging, had a great story about French revolutionaries storming one of their concerts. I stumbled into a cheap CD copy of Questions/Answers from a Japanese seller on ebay (was able to bundle shipping for about a dozen discs), and am glad to have it.

Thanks so much. I have older CD issue of that, but the bonus cuts on this one look great, so I'll grab it from DeepDiscount next time I place an order with them.

Thanks, I'll watch for the bundle if it's at a meaningful savings, though 'Us' and 'Mother Africa' on their own may be enough for me.

What is that? a reissue of something?

Anyone have a good USA source for acquiring the CD box set? I only see the LP box set available on Amazon and DustyGroove.
