  1. A full life, to say the least.
  2. http://www.bluenote.com/news/nels-cline-to-release-blue-note-debut
  3. With his sons, they played on a line together, who does that? Only Gordie!
  4. Weird, but makes sense if he was a perfectionist and, apparently, he was.
  5. He's on New York Stories, a Blue Note all-star thingy notable for the presence of Danny Gatton.
  6. I saw Bobby Watson & Horizon twice in quick succession in the Twin Cities roughly 25 years ago, Bobby & the rest were great.
  7. Music Millennium in Portland had a copy the other day, don't think used things show on their website.
  8. Still a fair # of Mosaic boxes left at MM yesterday. They also had that Charles McPherson Live thing in the used bins (For $14).
  9. Blue Note could do a fine playlist of Massey comp's for Spotify, as could Impulse, or maybe they have since I refuse to signup just to look at their lists. Always gets my attention if I see an album with a comp of his I haven't heard. Used to be a thing called 'composer's piano', Cal played 'composer's trumpet'.
  10. One of Joe Hen's many stellar sideman dates, and that's not even the best thing about it.
  11. Stunningly badly written, self-indulgent review; I quite enjoyed it!
  12. What's weird (to me) is Mott the Hoople doing this tune...but in a good way.
  13. Certainly love many of his recordings, and yeah him for getting to 90 still going strong...but last time I saw him I didn't even stay til the end. But then it was at my alma mater which I have a bit of a love/hate thing with and what I remember tells me it was the band not him.
  14. Had a bunch of DMMs, they were all fine except Jackie McLean's Tippin' In which had horribly distorted piano - so I replaced it with a CD.
  15. I played the CD reissue of this fine recording the other day and was reminded of how good it is - blowing and writing. And the bonus session is just as good, IMHO, YMMV, etc. Me and T the K might even agree on this. Thoughts?
  16. I know I've asked this before, but has anyone here heard the album of public domain (spirituals, folk songs, etc.) Ben made for a European grocery chain? It's mentioned as bding quite nice in one of the bios...and I've been intrigued ever since.
  17. Snag-proof is a good thing!
  18. http://revive-music.com/2014/07/10/masterclass-lenny-pickett-pt-1/#.V0NoS-TnX1o Lenny on where he's coming from. Elsewhere he's credited King Curtis and Jr Walker as influences, but who doesn't? As for his fondness for extreme altissimo playing, well maybe just because he can. I don't see much enuff similarity between him and Sanborn to make a sub-genre. What he plays at the start of SNL fits that context. Some local playing that at a jam, maybe not so much. But ultimately, I still think TtheK is making a thing out of no-thing.
  19. If you're talking about Lenny Pickett https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenny_Pickett, then I don't know what your problem with his sound is but you should quit posturing with your head up your ass, you'll hurt yourself. And if you're not talking about Mr Pickett, WTF are you talking about? It's not even that I like his playing all that much, but he's a professional player who no doubt has any number of reasons for sounding the way he does, and you're being a troll.
  20. Wonderful BASS player, IMHO; his presence on a record is enuff in itself to make me at least think about buying it.
  21. The whole idea of 'uncompromising' is incoherent if not downright absurd...so, what?
  22. What a lovely Studebaker!
  23. Sometimes edits, sometimes different takes from the same session, sometimes different takes from different sessions, sometimes just split into two parts, sometimes totally different tunes not on album at all, sometimes just like the LP. I think pretty much all the options were explored, to a greater or lesser degree.
  24. They had some vinyl, it went quickly. 'Laid back' is right!
