  1. Past or (then) current Ellington sidemen playing the rep is a different category, no?
  2. If you cherry pick this and the scattered Clarinet Summit Ellingtunia tracks you could make something pretty good, or at least interesting.
  3. The handful of Elingtunes Bechet did are all pretty special, IMHO. This is pretty special.
  4. Also dig the Hamilton/Dolphy and Waldron/Lacy and Earl Hines and, hmm, who am I forgetting?
  5. Shazam often does amazing things, but I've seen it be stumped and, rarely, just plain wrong as well.
  6. Everyone does Monk now precisely because nobody used to... There a Monk trib for every mood, among those I like are Arthur Blythe's, Steve Lacy's solo ones, Miles' as yet uncollected ones, the fort Apache Band's, just about anything that brings something new to the material....
  7. Edmonton Sask sounds like it was a good game.
  8. Chuck Berry, Run Run Rudolf, any number of compilations. Otis Redding, White Xmas (stunning rendition), ditto.
  9. That's amazing - 131 straight years!
  10. FWIW, Goin West gets a lot more spins at my place than Am I Blue, comparatively GW is positively sparkling.
  11. "the ling"?
  12. If I had the $ and time, I'd buy that whole songwriter series, just 'cause.
  13. http://www.soulfulkindamusic.net/mrice.htm Not sure if this is all he did as a recording artist (it doesn't include whatever Falcons things he may have sung on), but it's kinda patchy. Nonetheless, I didn't mean to imply that he shouldn't be remembered.

  15. Larry: Not sure how you missed the Monk trib - I recall it being a semi-big deal when it came out. I think I still own all/some of it, but I haven't listed to it in years which I guess pretty much sums it up, even though I don't recall being any more than mildly disappointed. That's the way I Feel Now or Light Blue (my fav Monk tribs) it's not. Srendippity dude! Dana
  16. Art Blakey and Art Pepper - both of them I had plans to go see at scheduled gigs and then they died. James Brown I wanted to go see in LA when I was there on vacation when I was very young - probably not a good idea/realistic and then missed here in Ptld when it would've been easily done. The Stones I wasn't in a position to see during the Brian Jones or Mick Taylor years and the Who I missed in Saskatoon when locals outdrew them in '66 or '67. No interest in seeing the Stones or Who current ghost bands.

  18. My dad (a prof himself) quite liked this, IIRC.
  19. Wasn't this supposedly recorded? and didn't 'Trane bring Ayler and a bunch of other surprise guests with him? ...and, most importantly, why are the sax dudes in the drawing playing altos (or, maybe, c-melodies)?!
  20. When are we gonna get a deluxe version of this with all the many other tunes they did and a mix that doesn't take the life out of it?
  21. But I'm sure it was Xmas on some planet...
