  1. Your reference to T.S.Eliot [and perhaps Chaucer] did not go unnnoticed. rock-ctr, "Live at the Lighthouse 1963-67" is on what label? On Pacific again? Man, that Jazz Corps with Kirk is killin'. Killin'. He plays everything, Coltrane to Ornette to Bechet-like. It's awesome!
  2. I'm similar, but opposite -- someone on the old [old] BN Board promised to tape me a Phineas Newborn Jazz USA video segment about 4 years ago. I think I inquired once or twice, and the "sender" finally replied, "I sent it, but it's lost in the mail"... yeah, right. Can't remember the name of that guy, but I'm sure he posts here.
  3. So, can we assume that this beverage affected his mind in some significant way? He was known to many Sherpas there as a Rite-cola Tse-ten Gyer-me , which in translation means - Steady Good Life.
  4. Indeed it is him! Right before he grew a beard and headed for Himalayas.
  5. Duly did today. Picked up - The Jazz Corps feat. Roland Kirk [first time I've seen it, ever] [Pacific Jazz] Paul Qinichette - The Vice Pres [Verve Elite] Frank Kimbrough/Joe Locke -Saturn's Child [Omnitone] Let the season begin!
  6. No cheating !
  7. "Herbina"? "Herbella"? "Nichol"? Wish I thought of those. Elizaveta LEEdia
  8. I happened to buy a Herbie Nichols JRVG while wife was in labor. We had a daughter.
  9. He had acknowledged that the BN sound was really Lion's, and that he recorded for BN specifically the way Lion wanted him to.
  10. An amazing AOW pick! LOve it. I think it leans way closer to Sun Ra than to Stanley Turrentine. How would you classify it? Space soul? What similar albums can you suggest?
  11. Just got it, played the two first cuts in the car. Holeeeee! Wow!
  12. For the risk of being overly enthusiastic I'd say that yesterday music was worthy of the "State of the Tenor" treatment. Number one -- Simply breath-taking playing by Lovano. He ruled yesterday, with child's audacious inventiveness, Vulcan's power and Solomon's mind. Frisell's playing is akin to Fripp's in a way that one can come back to it again and again, finding things that were not perceived at first. There were so many nuances coming out of his axe that it was almost impossible to imbibe everything on the spot. Paul Motian weaved a rhythmic web so tight that Lovano and Frisell had no chance but to play the way they did yesterday. But enough pontificating. Let's just say that I would buy a boxed set of this 2-week engagement in a heart-beat. Jazz Gods have smiled upon us. Another week of this magic is ahead. I can't wait to go back to the Vanguard for more!
  13. Citizens dig free outdoor gigs. I wonder how many sets Hill would sell out if he was playing in a club in KC.
  14. It's sad to hear about gigs drying up for you. I'm sure after the Labor Day things'll pick up. They do for many professions. What's going in on in Europe gig-wise, I wonder. Just checked out a few of the Frankfurt jazz clubs on-line and they mostly feature local musicians, the only American name I saw was Richie Cole...
  15. Sidewinder and Taru haven't been mentioned. Two different facets of Lee's playing. Higgins was there.
  16. I've changed my mind about Reach Out after hearing it 5x in the last 2 days. It's far from a "superb session", like someone said, but definitely not as bad as others[and I] proclaimed it to be. It's solid! Shame about the recording. It's got to be one of the worst studio-recorded cds I have. That's one of the reasons why I listen to Reach Out so infrequintly. Especially Benson's guitar. It sounds like it was recorded in a big plastic bag. Morganized, have you picked it up?
  17. [a really young] Bubber Miley? That's it. I've ran out of ideas. Good bye, unidentified young man with a horn.
  18. Since the acquisition of the original Mono would eat up half of my kid's college fund, what about the Japanese Mono Blue Train LP?
  19. Based on the recommendation of my friend Cali, I got Fiddler on the Roof and it is indeed a sweeeet session! A total eye-opener. Even friends of avant-garde might find something to sink their teeth into.
  20. Let me guess - it's "Beverly", isn't it?
  21. In one of Amis's biographies he talks about visiting Birdland around 1958 with Miles and Coltrane on the stand and hating it He was a moldy fig. Just like Larkin.
  22. Pleasure is not the right word [i am married], but yeah, if I can catch a right gig on the 13th it'd be really Fung Wah!
  23. I am very grateful to you for this cd. One of the best cds recorded in 1980s that I have.
