Tim Hagans's Animation does Bitches Brew, live
WD45 replied to Guy Berger's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
They are only doing sides A and B? What about C and D? Looks like the writer was trying to be cool referencing the LP, but didn't realize it was a double. -
I noticed the same thing on Monday.
-
Loveless was nice to listen to, but I always felt that it was a bit thin sounding -- not enough bottom end.

Futhermore, I don't think programming is the issue. There is enough classical music and cultural programming to run four or five simultaneous nationwide services. Having fresh programming created by the NEA wouldn't do any good. There was a large study recently completed that refutes the notion that news=good audience levels / classical=bad audience levels. There are both stations doing good and bad with both formats in similar circumstances. To me, the biggest crime is switching formats before considering other things that may detract from a station's performance.
-
Exactly right. But if the NEA has a beef, what's to allow them from ponying up some bread to create programming that addresses their concerns? Is that not allowed? I don't think that the NEA has the cash to spare. The feeling I get is that the NEA is saying, "Hey, we are keeping it real. You are selling out. WTF?"

I would like to once again plug Evan Parker's latest release, Time Lapse, on Tzadik. Superb!

What was an average production run of the Blue Note Lps?

It is possible that there may have been many extra sleeves hanging around somewhere. Or would they have used them up at some point through the years? -
Any specific recs on these?

Though I have a hard time with it myself, Bob Wills's signature "A-Haaaaa" thing made a lot of sense back in the 78 rpm days when bands would release a new disc to the jukebox trade every few weeks or so. Whenever they heard that identifying cry, listeners realized that they were hearing the new Bob Wills. But on a CD (not to mention LP) what was a canny week-to-week branding thing in its day becomes a major annoyance when repeated ad infinitum track after track. However, I can imagine such "signatures" coming back in the current musical climate, as the kids today have a "single" or "track" orientation in this downloading age. Individual rappers's trademark cameos on different tracks are a harbinger of this... Rapper Mike Jones is a master of this. You know it is Mike Jones because in every song he appears on he says "Mike Jooooooones." Make no mistake.

What model of organ are those?
-
OUCH! It's an aquired taste I suppose so I understand. It might help if you A-Haaaaa right back with him. Kinda like Flavor Flav's "yeeeah boyyyyy" thing, maybe. :bwallace2:
-
Too many shouts of "A-Haaaaa" for these ears. Just can't hang. A one-disc comp is enough for me! At least Keith Jarrett varies his vocalizations...

Same old, same old, eh? Quite pleasant, nonetheless. Thanks for posting. I wish I could have gotten the better parts of the show. There were some breathtaking moments that went uncaptured.

Yeah, & I hate it when he goes "avant-garde" & brings out a kid's raygun or something for one track on an album. I think he's a player that maybe I get irritated with because he's everywhere, to the point where I'm guaranteed that at least one CD per month I receive for review has Matt Wilson on it. That would be one of my bigger beefs with some avant-inclined players. Getting distracted by non-traditional methods of playing. Since I have expressed my love for Bennink, it is clear that I enjoy non-traditional techniques. It is just when doing it in a different way gets ahead of making music, my patience wears thin. IF you are playing in a non-traditional manner and not saying anything, you might as well step away from the instrument.

Your most common source for music purchases?
WD45 replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Word. -
Boy, I'd hate to see your reaction to Sunny Murray! ← no like sunny murray. i find him more "swooshy" and bennink more "chattery", which is what is annoying. also bennink seems "gimmicky" which makes me lose respect for him wheras murray seems sort of melodic. Having seen Bennink live, it gave me a better understanding of what he does. He was quite possibly the best drummer I have seen live.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't "clubs" like YourMusic, BMG, etc. log the items they offer for sale as "promos" & therefore deprive the artist of royalties from sale of said items? No stones being cast here, I'm as big of a bottom-feeder as there is, but.... That is true. BUT the artists have signed these royalties away as part of the "promotion package" in their contract. No value judgement here. That is the real deal? A large majority of the CDs I buy come from BMG.
-
There is always a bit of buyers remorse that fights with the ultra-thrifty side of me in the record store. I usually buy used in the brick-n-mortar stores, and some of the time those are promo discs. One used store in town will not buy obviously marked promo items. I'll give them props for that. One of the other places will pretty much buy anything. Missing discs, artwork -- no matter!
-
The person getting the burned copy might be so taken with the album that they would go out and buy a new copy. That would put money in the artist's pocket [hopefully], whereas the buyer of the used disc did not. Especially if that used disc was a promo! This has been a grey area of interest to me for some time...

Just posted two clips from the recent Tony Hymas / Evan Parker duo performance on YouTube:
-
No thoughts on Evan Parker's latest release on Tzadik, yet? This record is brilliant! Parker overdubs himself almost entirely on soprano, adding organ on one tune.
-
That would be awesome.

"Cover Tunes" from Youtube - the good, the bad, the ugly...
WD45 replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Proof that the kids are alright can be found in these two clips. This first one is a high school band from my area doing a quite difficult piece by DJ Shadow, Building Steam With a Grain of Salt. From what I understand, they had only a few days to learn it. Some of those drum breaks are tough! DJ Shadow's version, for reference. And a killer take on 21st Century Schizoid Man: And another. Plus a Japanese orchestral arrangement. -
How little do they know... I would listen to this before I put on Dancing In Your Head 100 times over.
