  1. I talked to Peter Brotzmann about the silver Bb clarinet that he uses. He found that sucker in a pawn shop in Buffalo, and had it rejuvenated by a technician. He seems to prefer it. This coming from someone who plays that tarogato!
  2. that jackpot is mine tonight.
  3. Picked up the DeFranco "Wailers" disc at a Half Price Books for $5.98, sealed. Sounds great to me -- there were even some bonus cuts! I'll be buying more.
  4. I have always been simpsonized...
  5. Mel Torme sings and plays drums with Kenton
  6. If they did record together, that would be quite interesting...
  7. Be was a killer album -- can't wait to hear Finding Forever. The single off of that in rotation [People] is a joy to hear.
  8. Another vote for the Giuffre set. Can't play that enough!
  9. 140,000 cars use the bridge every day. I can't imagine how this will affect the city for months to come. You can't put a bridge of that size up quickly. The governor said in a press conference something that contradicts a report in my earlier post. He says that there was no reported structural flaws in the May inspections...
  10. All of the local affiliates have their crews out there. I got on the bus tonight to go home from work about 10 minutes before it happened. I am close enough that I would have heard it. Officials are saying that it does not look like a terrorist attack, but a bridge weakness. In May 2006 the bridge was determined to have fatigue fractures. It was under repair when this happened. My family tried to get through via phone and couldn't the first few times. Even the regular phones are dicey and overloaded. Rescue teams from other communities with divers and air boats [this is the land of 10000 lakes] are coming in to help with the rescue. There is a Twins baseball game happening right now; if you are familiar with the geography of Mpls, you know that the venue is not far from the scene. They have decided not to end the game -- if they did the scene would be overwhelmed by people trying to get a gander or simply get home. What a mess.
  11. I have one of the LPs, but not the CD. But I plan on buying it.
  12. That baby would sound sweet through a Marshall doublestack or two
  13. That is one of the appealing things to me; he played with a force, energy, and vehemence yet not violently as some other free players might be described.
  14. For me, it depends where you draw the line in the sand. Post-Love Supreme? Post-Elvin/McCoy? Even when that line is drawn, there is a definite difference in the recordings. The Olatunji Concert is a different animal than Stellar Regions. Or Sun Ship vs. Interstellar Space. Talking about lines, it is interesting what crosses the line for some folks. My wife can listen to Albert Ayler but she can't stomach Cecil Taylor's BN recordings. Others hew to traditional notions of consonance/dissonance and even-paced rhythms. The thing that I love about that late period is the complete outpouring that Trane unleashes. Sometimes it can sound ferocious, sometimes as pastoral as can be. I loved the compositions that he used as jumping-off points. [ex.: Ogunde from that Olatunji concert, Welcome from Kulu Se Mama, Ascension, etc.] Which records did you hear that turned you off?
  15. How much for the Mona Lisa?
  16. Water, whole leaf gunpowder green tea, wine, whisky and the occasional beer are my fluids of choice. Rather than cola, i prefer a sparkling water, mineral or otherwise, with some lime. I used to drink a can or two of diet coke, but now the flavor is strangely chemical to my taste buds. Tea, in moderation, is a superb choice. Dig this, even: Tea 'healthier' drink than water
  17. Newbury, that is.
  18. And they deliver fast -- holy crap! I have picked up a couple OJCs from them and I would highly recommend them. Don't buy the ones that are on my wish list, though.
  19. This looks like something that Water Records would release in the current climate. Is there precedent for them releasing unissued material, however?
  20. If you find a copy of The Plan, I have an interested coworker. For real.
  21. Finally got to see the DTB on July 1st, as a birthday present. Here is a clip of it, shot from my spot as I leaned against the stage: DTB Sahib Teri Bandi The show smoked, and that man was on!
  22. wonderful sound, too! My first and favorite Monk discs.
  23. Including Main Attraction and The Final Comedown, too.
