There was a new Crumb cartoon in the March 22 issue of the New Yorker.

What is the deal with everyone covering Radiohead tunes? Last year classical pianist Christopher O'Reilly cut a whole disc's worth. I mean, I really dig some of what they are doing, but there seems to be a great deal of other current pop works begging to be covered...

Revenant is planning big Albert Ayler box
WD45 replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Yeah, if that Charlie Patton box was `$175 for 7 discs, that will make this $225? Yow. But how cool is that? A 9 disc Ayler box. -
I will only buy it if it has ridiculous liner notes.

If you are lucky, you can find the reissue of this coupled with the Buddy DeFranco "Blues Bag" album where he plays bass clarinet. 2x the treat! I have been curious about that Tony Scott. If I remember, that one features an odd combo of instruments--organ, oud, dumbek, and an early appearance of Colin Walcott on sitar.

MOUNTAIN BIKING SEASON HAS ARRIVED!
WD45 replied to randissimo's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Dude, I can't wait to get out. I might try this weekend if the rains hold off. I have been training at the gym for the last three months so the first ride won't kick my ass this year. In Minnesota there are some super trails as well. Looking forward to a couple of races in September. I'm a rider of the Trek 830 sort. -
I had this in my mitts last night as I moved the CDs to a new shelf, and I thought "I gotta listen to this on Saturday." Now I have me a reason.

I have expressed this in other threads, but I must say it again. WOOO!

I once argued this point with a friend of mine who also played the guitar. I change my strings once per year. I have gotten so used to the tone I get with the dull sounding strings that at replacement, they sound WAAAY too bright for me. I think if I am ever to persue the axe more seriously I will have to get over that. I play a junk shop acoustic 3/4 guitar; the only label is a tag glued inside the box reading "Model No. 100." That dull sound I am used to is more like what I am used to hearing on old recordings of fingerstyle rags, old timey stuff and old blues records. That and old John Fahey records. To make matters more difficult for my friend, I always insisted on running ernie ball super slinky electric strings on it.

'bout time! We have been rallying for this set for years. What's next? Those Braxton Arista sides?

Alpha Beta all the way dude.

how did you get these vouchers? I tried clicking on the link posted above and it redirects me to the sign in page and once i'm signed in i can't find any settlement pages. I have been a member off and on for 4 years, and I've bought plenty of regular priced CDs If you go to Google and search for "bmg settlement" and click on their cached copy, it will bring you to the right place. I had the same trouble accessing it at work. I might try to make multiple claims, as I was a member at least three times during that era. We'll see...

Mine are organized the same way, and have made some of the same observations. I'll have a closer look at the rack tonight to give some specifics.

And you thought you had a bad day...

Gerard Hoffnung does a killer version of this bit. Its on this two disc anthology I picked up: Hoffnung -
Oops. I must have read the review elsewhere, as it is not in AMG. Just listened to some samples at CD Universe, and it is cooking. Some of it reminds me of Earl Hooker, with that wah pedal.

Found this in the little store here in Green Bay (!) SMOKES! diggin' it - go buy it Anyone get the Mel Brown or any other Verve reissues on the 9th? I have been waiting to hear what anyone thought of the Mel Brown as well. Looks good, and the AMG review was favorable. Mel's lookin' smooth with that hair.

I like this one a great deal as well. In the first track, about 4-5 minutes in, Bley plays a bit that feels like the eye of a hurricane--there was some agitated before, and it feels as if the group has come to a plateau. It is quite tonal, and their improvisations are worthy compositions in themselves. After another 4-5 minutes, it is back into the twisting dialogues. It is those few minutes in the clearing that make this disc a keeper for me.

I look forward to it. I miss hearing his crisp acoustic work. I only wish he would have picked it up for those Shakti reunion records...

Love that album, but damn. $

Has anyone seen this?

I think "Sweet Honey Bee" was part of the first round of Rare Grooves, without the clear tray. Also in this series was Grant Green "Alive" on its first CD issue.

In defense of this, playing entire works was often not the norm when the pieces were written. This is a relatively contemporary phenomenon. [in terms of classical music performance.]

There is a new album out featuring Laswell on acoustic guitar and keys. The group is called Abyssinia Infinite and the album is "Zion Roots." Dig on the review and samples here. More info here. This one also features as the centerpiece the vocals of a one Ejigayehu "Gigi" Sibabaw. It less a less glossy version of her last full-length album. The sax player on the first cut has to have the most beautiful sound on tenor that I have ever heard. This is a super album. The Painkiller stuff with Zorn and Laswell is interesting. Not jazz, really, but something new. I have really enjoyed the Tabla Beat Science live albumthat Laswell is a part of with Zakir Hussain. A certain Ethiopian singer guests on the record as well. The ambient stuff on Subharmonic has left me a little cold. Other than that, call me a fan. I once told a friend "I just can't get enough of Bill Laswell." His response, in light of Laswell's massive discography was "Actually, I think you can."
