  1. I'll second that. The stuff on the HRS set is great, as is his "...With Strings" album.
  2. If I am not mistaken, this release contains one of my favorite recorded musical performances EVER; that being "It Ain't Neccessarily So." I have the Giants of Jazz compilation and this cut is on there. I can't wait to hear the whole record.
  3. Good choice...I think I would rather hear him on vibes than piano, though. I like his vibes playin' but I am totally effin' nuts about his piano chops. All of that lower register rumbling. Love it!
  4. Eddie Costa - I would have loved to hear him with some advanced reeds players. Dupree Bolton. John Gilmore, on his own. Scott LaFaro. Hell, put them all in a band with Tony Williams or Pete LaRoca and I would be in heaven.
  5. I got my 3 CDs as part of the settlement deal. 3 Discs for $13, shipping included. Johnny Cash - Live At Folsom Prison Miles Davis - On the Corner Bill Frisell - Intercontinentals It was a pretty short turnaround time. Y'all have until August 14, 2004 to get in on it. Here is a link to the .pdf of the voucher... CLICK
  6. Oooh I know! That group with part of Megadeth in it, right? I'll now be anxiously awaiting my Ken Gorelick discs.
  7. I think Moxie is abou as close as I want to get to Cinnamon soda.
  8. You coulda named yourself after a tractor. Everyone will remember that.
  9. I love Days Have Gone By. No shit. I remember liking it when I first heard it but it really of crept up on me over the past couple of years. I usually say The Transfiguration of Blind Joe Death or Death Chants, Waltzes, and Military Breakdowns when people ask but I keep coming back to this one like an old friend. you can imagine how pleased I was to find it on Takoma for all of six dollars. BTW: My LP copy of Transfiguration was purchased for me by my last girlfriend for one whole dollar at a library book sale about three years ago (and it still had the stapled booklet of fictional liner notes by Fahey!). Have you picked up the most recent "Best of, Vol.2 1964-1983" That Fantasy just released? It has some unreleased items from 1991 [ making the title appear somewhat silly ] that are excellent. A couple are versions of old songs, and another new item. Worth the price for me, because I will have a tough time finding albums like "Railroad" for a decent price...
  10. I love Days Have Gone By.
  11. This Cannonball date is fabulous.
  12. Might I just add that I am thoroughly enjoying the return of the cat?
  13. Speaking of Fennesz, his latest has been tempting me at the local record store every week for some time now. I dig Hotel Paral.lel and Endless Summer.
  14. One of my business associates produced his Letter From America for a good number of years. It was a sad day indeed.
  15. There was a new Crumb cartoon in the March 22 issue of the New Yorker.
  16. What is the deal with everyone covering Radiohead tunes? Last year classical pianist Christopher O'Reilly cut a whole disc's worth. I mean, I really dig some of what they are doing, but there seems to be a great deal of other current pop works begging to be covered...
  17. Yeah, if that Charlie Patton box was `$175 for 7 discs, that will make this $225? Yow. But how cool is that? A 9 disc Ayler box.
  18. I will only buy it if it has ridiculous liner notes.
  19. If you are lucky, you can find the reissue of this coupled with the Buddy DeFranco "Blues Bag" album where he plays bass clarinet. 2x the treat! I have been curious about that Tony Scott. If I remember, that one features an odd combo of instruments--organ, oud, dumbek, and an early appearance of Colin Walcott on sitar.
  20. Dude, I can't wait to get out. I might try this weekend if the rains hold off. I have been training at the gym for the last three months so the first ride won't kick my ass this year. In Minnesota there are some super trails as well. Looking forward to a couple of races in September. I'm a rider of the Trek 830 sort.
  21. I had this in my mitts last night as I moved the CDs to a new shelf, and I thought "I gotta listen to this on Saturday." Now I have me a reason.
  22. I have expressed this in other threads, but I must say it again. WOOO!
  23. I once argued this point with a friend of mine who also played the guitar. I change my strings once per year. I have gotten so used to the tone I get with the dull sounding strings that at replacement, they sound WAAAY too bright for me. I think if I am ever to persue the axe more seriously I will have to get over that. I play a junk shop acoustic 3/4 guitar; the only label is a tag glued inside the box reading "Model No. 100." That dull sound I am used to is more like what I am used to hearing on old recordings of fingerstyle rags, old timey stuff and old blues records. That and old John Fahey records. To make matters more difficult for my friend, I always insisted on running ernie ball super slinky electric strings on it.
