  1. Indeed. I bought that in Sheffield for about 1/4 of the Tokyo price. Since then I've watched in on NHK in HD. The Beeb is in a class of it's own with this kind of documentary. I was also extremely impressed by 'Ganges' My link, one of the few that can match Planet Earth in fantastic photography. If you've missed it then I recommend it with the highest praise.
  2. Cold and grey, too much rain. More like Sheffield than Tokyo.
  3. How do you get to see these so early? I thought 'The Killing II' was a bit slow to get going but by episode 4 I was utterly gripped. Sometimes you need to accept the slow burn; otherwise you get that whizz-bang thing every 2 minutes that is so common. Bev Internet + fibre-optic broadband + external HDD + HighDef media player + tele
  4. I've watched the first episode and it was the usual fare, female cop (surly this time) and partner, body on a bridge , a generous slathering of Norse-angst and what look like potential red herrings. I didn't feel compelled to immediately watch episode two, and how it will develop, well or badly, is a toss up. My verdict, based only on the first dollop, is that it's worth watching.
  5. Fringe Wow, WTF happened ! Lon & Shawn be sure to catch this week's episode!
  6. Sorry to hear that. I've had a lot of pleasure listening to his golden vibes. RIP.
  7. The dvd from the Ray Charles Complete Atlantic box. Absolutely sublime.
  8. Had my first up close look at this monster yesterday. Pity they can't find better things to spend money on, like decent housing for the thousands of tsunami refugees living in crowded squalor.
  9. At school we had a lunch time music club. There was a crappy old record player and a mixture of pop music and classical tracks selected by the music teacher. I took my brand new copies of Ray Charles Hit The Road Jack and Sam Cooke Chain Gang. The kids called me Professor because of my short back & sides haircut and Hank Marvin glasses. My hip credentials went up a notch thanks to Brother Ray. I was never aware of anyone influencing my tastes, apart from my next door neighbour's brother who was the world's biggest Elvis fan.
  10. Interesting. Maybe someone could start a 'What was the first 45 (or lp) you bought?'thread. Mine were Ray Charles What'd I Say and a VeeJay compilation lp simply called 'The Blues'. That was around 1960, I was 14 and had to save for ages to get the lp. I still listen to much the same music as I did then . I think my first jazz lp was ' Mingus Oh Yeah' around 1962 or 1963.
  11. Same every day. Muesli, bran flakes, banana, soy milk and homemade yoghurt. Coffee. Boring but who cares.
  12. Touch Getting very silly indeed. The child is starting to get on my nerves.
  13. Don't bother with the Andorran version. Get the original! I'm not so sure about that, Bev. Before watching the Canadian version I would have dismissed it out of hand as being unable to match the Danish original. In all fairness, I think it stands up well although I'm sure almost everyone will disagree. Just my opinion.
  14. Many happy returns, Jeff.
  15. Scott & Bailey House Some more from The Mentalist season 2
  16. Mad Men I've followed the show since the start and have never made any comments but fat Betty just took the wind out of my sails. I'm also wondering just when Roger is going to keel over again. In literally every scene he has a glass or a cig in his hand. The general gluttony is striking, Harry ate 20 hamburgers and Betty had no qualms about finishing two ice cream parfaits.
  17. Teaching archive, true confessions Me: The ship is sailing around The Mediterranean, At the moment it's sailing from Genoa to Naples. ((Looking at a map) Which country do you think it will sail to next? 1st year university student: (Looking at map) Tibet. Me: Tell me three countries in Africa. High school kid: But Africa is a country, isn't it?
  18. Fringe Flying mutant porcupines.
  19. Indeed, she's a real doll
  20. The White House Blues Concert on PBS, ended up watching the Motown Gig and parts of the Latin bash. All very enjoyable.
  21. Scott & Bailey . The Boss A very good, well crafted episode. I think the dense, rapid Manchurian dialogue, especially 'The Boss' might prove too much for non Brits !
  22. The perfect and beautiful conjunction of The Crescent Moon, Jupiter and Venus. Brilliantly clear here, I even managed some photographs.
  23. I'll be watching that later. Just watched this week's The Good Wife, excellent even by it's consistently high standard. I've given up on the lame and boring BBC White Heat. Couldn't care less about any of the dreary characters. I was there and it was much more fun than this !
  24. Fringe- yawn, loony murderers again, wtf? Titanic (ITV) Upstairs Downstairs meets Dowton Abbey. Really, what's the point, who, I wonder could have any interest in yet another version of The Titanic sinking? Shallow and glossy trash. With the ship hitting the iceberg after just 30 minutes, one wonders how they will pad out the next 3 episodes. Watch the great ' A Night To Remember' instead.
