I was home in our apartment here in DC (Columbia Heights) when it hit, and our building shook one heck of a lot. Seemed like 30-45 seconds in all, but I suspect it was shorter. I'm surprized nothing fell off the shelves, as much as everything shook. Our car ran under the bed, and wouldn't come out for almost 2 hours. Not something I was expecting when I moved to the east coast, to put it mildly.

CDs and Box Set For Sale
Rooster_Ties replied to Face of the Bass's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Great disc, and a bargain at twice the price. -
Anybody know the full line-up? (I'm presuming Wayne and Freddie were playing in the same group.)

I absolutely LOVE this date (The Soul Man) -- maybe my all-time favorite "less well-known Wayne" date. I can't quite put my finger on why, but everything just seemed to work perfectly on this date. "Tom Thumb" surpasses Wayne's later BN version, and most of the rest of the tunes are compelling, with Ron Carter's "Tenaj" being especially interesting.

best ornette Blue Note Album?
Rooster_Ties replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Artists
Though the two dates with Dewey are the best (imho), I think I like Foxhole a little better than the Golden Circle sides. Not 100% sure what I think of Denardo's drumming on Foxhole, but that's half the fun of it. -
I too am pining for some pre-DSotM material LIVE, especially like this (a track originally from Obscured by Clouds)... link: Pink Floyd - Childhood's End (Brussels 1972) Note: I've got this link cued up to start a little over a minute into the clip, when it starts to get good -- and at least stick around for Gilmour's sublime guitar-work around the 3-minute mark, followed shortly by a great Wright keyboard solo, and then some more great Gilmour.

Album Covers That Make You Say "Uhhhh...."

Am I the only one that think this qualifies? -
One way or another, do get Animals. It's probably my single favorite Pink Floyd album (in total), even if there are individual cuts prior that I might like even better.

At least one or two live concerts (in the mid 60's) with that Miles-less quartet, iirc. Not sure if any were ever recorded though, anybody know?

The group recorded live in Berlin in 1976 iirc (Berliner Jazztage) is perhaps my very favorite Woody leader-date. Top-drawer arranging, soloing, everything. Shame it's such a pain to find these days (OOP and pricy used), as I think it's perhaps the perfect intro to Woody for the uninitiated.

best ornette Blue Note Album?

'Love Call' and 'New York is Now', hands down. Any/every Ornette is great, but I generally like him a lot better in quartet settings, where I think the foil of another horn nearly always lends to the proceedings. Loves me some Dewey too (at least on tenor - and iirc, he only plays tenor on these two days, a plus!), so my desert island Ornette on BN is definitely one of those two. -
I think at least a couple of these ought to be on anybody's really short-list (we can argue about which ones). among the Arkestra's last recordings, I really like... Mayan Temples (Black Saint, 1990) Somewhere Else (Rounder, recorded 1988/89) - outtakes from the two A&M sessions (Blue Delight & Purple Night) Live at Pit-Inn, Tokyo (DIW, 1988) And because they were among the very first Arkestra dates I ever heard, I still have a soft-spot for Blue Delight & Purple Night (the two A&M dates from 1988/89), but in many ways I think the outtakes (found on Somewhere Else) are superior. And love it or hate it, I also think Lanquidity (Evidence, 1978) is da bomb. On Jupiter and Sleeping Beauty (both reissued on Art Yard, both 1979), and to a lesser extent Strange Celestial Road (Rounder, 1979 or 80) - are all great too.

What ever happened to this?? Does anybody know what specific "material by Andrew Hill and Wes Montgomery" was being readied?? Hint, hint, hint... Whatever became of the "Discovery" series?? Anybody know what Andrew Hill and/or Wes Montgomery recordings were being prepared for release, and is any of that still in the pipeline? FWIW, Freddie's "Without a Song" came out in June '09.

what's your flavor ice cream?
Rooster_Ties replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Hands down, my favorite ice cream flavor combination... a Root Beer and Chocolate Ice Cream float. -
They're also releasing expanded 2-disc versions of Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, and a 3-disc Wall (with a full extra disc of previously unreleased material each) -- for those who don't want to buy the huge boxes.

I can't remember all the details, but aren't those really huge 'single-album' floyd sets like 6 or 7 discs long each? - and half of them DVD's? Surely too expensive at $130, but if they ever come down to $90 or $100, they might be a lot more tempting.

Her unnecessarily short life perhaps highlights the longevity of Keith Richards, who I gather did everything she did ten or twenty times over, but inexplicably lived to tell about it.

Bootleg: Miles Davis Quintet Live in Europe 1967
Rooster_Ties replied to mjzee's topic in New Releases
Just listened to the Paris date last night. For years I used to claim its version of "Round Midnight" was really one of THE finest things Miles ever played - specifically his intro to the tune, which I think rivals his original Columbia version. For years, whenever I found other live Miles versions of "Round Midnight" (post-1964) - I always hoped they would rival the Paris '67 version (alas, none ever quite have, IMHO). Jim, if you've never heard this Paris show - you're in for a treat. Don't know that all that Paris show is necessarily better (in total) than any of the others from that tour, but that Paris intro to Round Midnight has been on my desert island list for going on 20 years. -
An excellent showcase for Charles Tolliver!

Bootleg: Miles Davis Quintet Live in Europe 1967
Rooster_Ties replied to mjzee's topic in New Releases
Ah, how interesting! I have three early 90's silver-disc boots (on labels like JazzUp, JMY, and a plain-label disc that I only now see is a CDR, though I've had it for at least 10 years), but only one of them is included in this new release! The three I already have are: Antwerp (28-Nov-67), Berlin (4-Nov-67), and Paris (6-Nov-67) -- so 2/3rds of this new release will be new to me! (To say nothing of the DVD, which I've had 10-generation VHS-copies for 20 years, and seen on Youtube.) Even if I already had all of it, I would have probably gotten one -- but I'd definitely be getting one, sooner or later. -

3 discs plus 1 DVD -- and I'm betting the DVD will not replicate material from the CD's. Still a touch more that I'd ideally like to spend, but then again, what isn't.
