  1. How's the planning for this going??? Just curious...
  2. Up, for my "Carmell Jones" question (see my post immediately above this one). Also, I was listening to Andrew Hill's "Point of Departure" just the other day (for the first time in quite a long while, actually). Did Kenny Dorham ever record on anything else even half as 'progressive' as "Point of Departure"??? In other words, is "PoD" Dorham's one and only "progressive" recording??? Also, did Blue Michell ever do any 'progressive' dates??? Thanks!!!
  3. I was listening to "Schizophrenia" yesterday, and while the date isn't my all-time favorite Wayne album, there are still some great things going on there. I think Chuck said in another thread that this date suffered a bit with Curtis Fuller and James Spaulding on it, and I do kinda understand what you're saying Chuck. I wonder if Moncur had been on the date instead of Fuller, if that might have improved things, perhaps??
  4. Anybody remember the old "The Contrabass Flute Revolution Has Begun" ad(s?) in Downbeat, from about 1970?? Full page, if I recall. Damn freaky!!!
  5. Glad to see so many names and bands listed in this thread. I was beginning to wonder if anyone else liked anything current in rock music, after the major "classic rock" threads that were going on. By the way, assuming you don't get your "modern rock" fix on the radio (and I suspect many of us can't, since there seems to be less and less of that on the airwaves these days), I'm wondering where people find out about new bands/groups/artists that are worth checking out??? I get most of mine from a select few friends, who are closer to to that scene than I am. That's how I found out about Interpol in particular, and fortunately I found out soon enough to get to see them live in concert, here in Kansas City. I guess that was another reason I started this thread, was to see what names came up that I was maybe vaguely aware of, but hadn't really checked out yet. Thanks!!!
  6. I agree. Personally, I think we ought to just leave the Norah Jones board alone, and if they want some idiot like Musicboy on their board, then so be it. Maybe he'll cause some other big mess for Neon someday, but hey, that's not our problem. I've stopped posting there, and aside from occasionally maybe checking the "Race Discussion" thread I started there, I probably won't post there ever again.
  7. By the way, I see I'm only 40 posts away from breaking 1,000. Wonder if that means I get to move up from "Supa Groover"???? By the way, what's after "Supa Groover" anyway????
  8. The answer you are searching for is HERE.... B)
  9. I was totally blown away by it as well. First non-album-cover Avatar I've ever had... Found it here: http://www.jazzlandscapes.com Check out the paintings, animations, illustrations, and comissions. There's some cool shit going on here, to be sure...
  10. Actually, here's a whole bunch of recent photos of Grimes... http://www.downtownmusic.net/pictures/pict...mes/default.htm And, frankly, a ton of photos of a ton of different musicians... http://www.downtownmusic.net/pictures/
  11. Someone just started this thread at AJJ... Censorship and bad AAJ publicity First post goes like this... Be interesting to see if any of the moderators of AAJ have any response. FYI, I also just posted this over there....
  12. Hey, welcome back, grey!!!! Glad you found us!!
  13. About 40% of my CD's are classical titles (and about half of those were found used for $5-$8 each, or are cheap Naxos titles). About 40% are jazz, and the remaining 20% are rock/alternative CD's. My wife thinks I have way too many CD's, and in her defense - I have been thinning the heard quite a bit in recent months. Actually, I think I have more like 2,500 CD's currently, down from an all-time high of 3,000 a couple years ago.
  14. www.auctionstealer.com is back on-line now, with no mention of them being gone for several days. ??????
  15. Yup, FANCY FREE is a good one too.
  16. (re: Eminem more 'meaningful' than Greg Osby) Excuse me, but are you seriously suggesting that Greg Osby's music is lacking worth??? Have you heard any of his work since about 1996??? Sure, his earlier CD's before '96 were (I felt) somewhat lacking. But I think every disc he's released since "Art Forum" in 1996, and especially since Jason Moran joined Osby in 1998 - are some of the best recorded jazz albums of the past 5 years. Osby's "Symbols of Light" features a string quartet used in a way that I've rarely heard in jazz, and I think this album is one of the top 25 albums of the last 20 years. I'm not saying you gotta like Osby, but at least give a little respect. Osby less 'meaningful' than Eminem???????
  17. 'no-one' really like CD's????????? I own about 3,000 CD's, and maybe 50-75 albums (LP's) at most. And I know a number of other people who have more CD's than I do. And sure, I also know a couple people who have 10,000 LP's in their basement. Maybe true "collectors" crave vinyl, but there are plenty of music lovers who love CD's as well. This may be a generational thing, because personally I don't know any serious music fans under the age of 45 with large LP collections, but I know plenty with large CD collections. Conversely, nearly all the LP fanatics I know are over the age of 45. At least that's been my experience, with people I've met, face to face. (I'm sure there are plenty of exceptions.) (Given the option of buying something on CD or LP, I'll buy the CD nearly every time - if I think it's a recording that I'll want to listen to for years to some.)
  18. I've always spent 95% of my music-money on music (actually, probably more like 98% or 99%). My gear has always been substandard, but with all the great music that is here today, and out of print tomorrow (and with limited financial resources) - what else can you do??? I suppose I could have taken a couple thousand dollars and invested in a fancy system, but then I think what those $2K bought in terms of music over the past couple years, I think going the "cheap stereo" route is by far the better choice for me. I'm always saying I'll upgrade my stuff when I win the lottery.
  19. I really like KOFI, but then that's mostly cuz it isn't a Mizell production. I've sampled a few of those later Byrd dates from the early 70's, but I never can find enough in them to bite the bullet and buy any of them. Maybe there's more in there that I'm missing, but at the rate I'm going - I may never find out!!
  20. Actually, on further thought, I might have chosen Fuschia Swing Song, if it had been in the poll choices...
  21. I might go back, just to see how it goes, but home is here for me now. And I doubt there'd be any room for all the non-Jazz subjects, and the board wouldn't have the same feel without them.
  22. Most fucked up thread ever!!
  23. Oh man, that sucks. Can't believe that Organissimo got edited out of a post at AJJ. Is Musicboy a mod over there now???
  24. This probaby even beats that one amazingly fucked-up "Ornette" thread on the BNBB, where the order of the posts was random, and most of the posts were garbled. Some of you must surely remember that one, no??
  25. Man, that huge post of yours Jim, has to be the most fucked up thing I've ever seen on a board.
