  1. From Richard Shapiro's Cecil Taylor sessionography http://www.efi.group.shef.ac.uk/mtaylors.html The Village Gate, NYC, September 19, 1965 1. Number One 2. Octagonal Skirt and Fancy Pants Cecil Taylor: piano; Jimmy Lyons: alto sax; prob. Henry Grimes: bass; Sunny Murray: drums Rare Broadcast Performances Ozone (Italy) 19 (lp) Note: This was originally recorded for BBS tv broadcast by WNET-TV, NYC. the original material was broadcast followed by a panel discussion involving CT, novelist Ralph Ellison and critic Martin Williams. The taping from this original broadcast is some 29 min. long. These are believed to be rehearsals, not concert performances. Note: Some sources give the drummer as Andrew Cyrille. Some give the bassist as Alan Silva. Note: The rest of this record features music by Charles Mingus.
  2. I'm sure the cover art on the various reissues over the years has scared off many of the curious. Too bad, because they are great albums.
  3. I have this on vinyl. Never really cared for it, other than the second version of Nonaah.
  4. Thanks for the birthday wishes. This is a great place.
  5. Any "issues" with any of these? I want to get Stop and Listen and Some Other Stuff, but wanted to make sure the end of "Saturday and Sunday" isn't tacked on anywhere.
  6. Lock and Murray have also collaborated on Thriving on a Riff: Jazz & Blues Influences in African American Literature and Film.
  7. Mixtery was released as a 50th birthday celebration for Braxton back in the mid-1990s. It's a collection of essays, recollections and salutations from various writers and musicians. An excellent read.
  8. Mosaic has been planning to reissue the Thompson-Pettiford ABC stuff on vinyl.
  9. Master of the Art also had an interview with Woody tacked on to the end.
  10. They did an album of Gunther Schuller arrangements featuring Gunther himself conducting. I believe Howard Johnson guested. Haven't heard it in ages. There were several other albums.
  11. Thanks. I'm guessing the first disc is this: http://www.attictoys.com/jazz/LT57-74.HTM Date: February 9, 1965 Location: Half Note, NY Label: [private recording] Lucky Thompson (ldr), Lucky Thompson (ss, ts), Paul Neves (p), George Tucker (b), Oliver Jackson (d) a. The World Awakes (Lucky Thompson) b. What's New (Bob Haggart, Johnny Burke) c. Lady Bird (Tadd Dameron) d. Strike Up the Band (George Gershwin, Ira Gershwin) All titles unissued. The only reference found to this session is in the Bruyninckx discography where it is designated a "private recording." Alan Grant is indicated as the mc. Track a is called "The World Waits" but I strongly suspect it is really Thompson's composition "The World Awakes."
  12. It will take a genius to figure out the power structure of the Argos.
  13. Anyone have info on what's on the upcoming Lucky Thompson release on Uptown?
  14. The cover on my 35-year-old turntable was removed years ago. I miss it.
  15. Melle had a website where he listed the correct personnel. The website appears to have disappeared.
  16. Lee Morgan does a nice version on the non-Blue Note Live at the Lighthouse.
  17. The live Westbrook Rossini is excellent. Highly recommended.
  18. Happy Birthday Nate!
  19. Blue Moods with Miles Davis and Charles Mingus would have been entertaining to watch from behind the glass.
  20. Blue Spirits, Ready for Freddie and “Pensativa” from Night of the Cookers. As a sideman: Compulsion and True Blue.
  21. R.I.P. One of the trumpet greats and he should also be remembered as an excellent composer and arranger.
  22. You'll want all three. London is my favourite, with Coventry not far behind. Coventry also has the added bonus of interviews with Braxton. Beware of the 1-disc bootleg version, however.
  23. Me too. They are in my 'Top 5 RVG these, please' list.
  24. Looking forward to seeing Slava Ganelin in concert in the spring. Have some Mosaics to get, some Blue Notes to grab before they are gone and hope there are a few Nessa reissues.
