  1. I have a 30-year-old turntable and an amp that distorts on one channel. I guess I shouldn't go anywhere near the Hoffman forum.
  2. The stout is indeed a good one.
  3. I've heard that another edition will be published this year.
  4. The Woody Shaw comment dates back to the 2nd edition (and possibly the 1st, which I don't have). I've always been baffled by it. How does recording a bunch of stellar albums for Muse and then getting picked up by a major label show clouded career judgment? I used to love the Penguin guide and discovered a lot of European and Russian jazz because of it, but have become aggravated by slopping editing (references to CDs they dropped several editions ago) and misleading reviews (they make Mingus at Carnegie Hall sound like a Sibelius symphony and not the jam session that it is). The clincher was when they began listing a fictitious Braxton CD (due to garbled info on the AMG site) yet review the thing as if they have listened to it. The guide needs a really heavy editing.
  5. Ricky Ray threw three touchdown passes, including a pair to Fred Stamps, to lead the Edmonton Eskimos to a 37-16 win over the Calgary Stampeders in Monday's annual Labour Day Classic game. A.J. Harris had a rushing touchdown for the Eskimos, who improved to 6-3 and second place in the West Division. http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=248240&amp...s=topStory_main
  6. Is the HatHut CD reissue of the double LP Non Troppo edited? If so, how much music was omitted on the reissue?
  7. Roscoe Mitchell - Sketches from Bamboo -- a 1979 creative orchestra recording on Moers Eleh - Homage to the Square Wave -- two sides of analog drone
  8. Maybe Hoffman will next "discover" an alternate take of "Totem Pole."
  9. The Economist! Also like Private Eye.
  10. tsn.ca says: Hamilton Ticats quarterback Casey Printers might not be starting against the Toronto Argonauts in their annual Labour Day clash after all. According to the Hamilton Spectator, Printers reported to practice after the bye week on Monday and still had issues with the thumb on his throwing hand.
  11. I seem to recall the book was riddled with errors, such as a confident description of Mingus at Monterey which had so many errors about personnel and such that it made me wonder if the author had ever heard the album.
  12. My 10-month-old seemed to enjoy it.

    Evan Parker

How do Saxophone Solos, Six of One and The Snake Decides compare to Monoceros? The latter is one of my favourite solo saxophone recordings.
  14. Apparently, Winnipeg signed Berry to a contract extension at the beginning of the season. It will be tough not to fire him if the Bombers bomb against Hamilton tomorrow. Haven't been following the CFL as closely this year, but how is Casey Printers doing in Hamilton? I heard there may be a quarterback controversy in the making.
  15. Hubbard's Ready for Freddie and Blue Spirits.
  16. You are correct. The Danish Radio date is not on Holy Ghost.
  17. Sequentially it doesn't make a lot of sense, but this is my favourite Mosaic Select. The two albums from '68 in particular are fabulous and should be heard by all AMG reviewers who think Patton is just another Jimmy Smith clone. I wish Mosaic would do another Patton Select, but since MC wasn't too excited by Blue John in the liner notes, that likely won't happen.
  18. In most other Western countries, that youth pastor would be doing time in jail for this.
  19. When, where did this happen? Just curious. It was around 2005. He gave the OK to a member of the Braxton Yahoo group, which then seeded the Arista recordings. I seem to recall his blessing applied to all of his recordings. He'd rather people be listening to his music. A lot of the Braxton Yahoo group members then chipped in some money as a 60th birthday present for Braxton.
  20. :tup Excellent movie. One of my two or three favourite films of the last 10 years.
  21. Onzy Matthews Select. Disc 1. One of the great lost albums.
  22. Interesting read. Thanks for posting.
