Universal Music Italia box sets
king ubu replied to Fer Urbina's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
damn, you were faster and I didn't double check before posting my own thread ... maybe a kind moderator can delete it? I'll reproduce my post here: Okay, so let's give this a shot ... please help complete the list! First, as far as I know, it all started with thrree genuine Universal sets that were reissued, with reduced booklets: Jazz at the Philharmonic 1944-49 Charlie Parker - Complete Verve Recordings Lester Young - Complete Verve Recordings There are long gone (they came and went pretty fast, a friend of mine got either the Young or JATP, but I've never seen it) - the Bird is back though! Then, there started to turn up a wealth of album-based sets, containing music that belonged to Fantasy, went on to Concord and was brought back by Universal, the European distributor or Concord: Chet Baker - Complete Riverside & Jazzland Albums John Coltrane - Complete Prestige Albums Miles Davis - Complete Prestige Albums Eric Dolphy - Copmlete Prestige/New Jazz Albums Duke Ellington - The Carnegie Hall Concerts Bill Evans - The Riverside & Milestone Albums Lee Konitz - Complete Milestone Albums Thelonious Monk - Complete Prestige Albums Thelonious Monk - All Monk: The Riverside Albums Sonny Rollins - Complete Prestige Albums also a few "partial" sets: Charles Mingus - Leader on Debut (new compilation in this form) Bill Evans - The Complete Village Vanguard Recordings 1961 Miles Davis - Steamin'/Workin'/Relaxin'/Cookin' Then, they went on exploring the Universal vaults some more: Count Basie - The Original American Decca Recordings Clifford Brown - The Complete EmArcy Recordings Duke Ellington - Brunswick & Vocalion 1926-31 (= Early Ellington, GRP) Bill Evans - Complete Bill Evans on Verve Billie Holiday - Complete Billie Holiday on Verve Keith Jarrett - The Impulse Years Charles Mingus - The Impulse Albums Bud Powell - Complete Bud Powell on Verve Ant as one of the latest, they're also bringing back (in spite of the album box listed above!) this one: Miles Davis - Chronicle: The Complete Prestige Recordings A note on the Coltrane Prestige box: there's also a scaled down version of the Complete Prestige Recordings box around (the same friend has it and I saw it, it's pretty nice with a real booklet ... I guess it's the same deal as the new Chronicle set, which is also said to come with a real booklet) - I'd not go for the albums box! The albums sets, to my knowledge (I've only had the Rolins in my own hands) come with minimal booklets, the Bud Verve set has a minimal one, too, but the Brownie has the same as the original box had ... so it seems it's not handled the same way always (huge original booklets - JATP, Bud on Verve, prob. Billie on Verve - won't e included again). -
here's Bruyninckx' entry: ____________________________ Paris Jazz Concert- : same pers. "Théâtre de l'Olympia", Paris, May 13, 1961 The summit (*) Europe n°1 (F)710373/374 (CD) Yama (*) - Close your eyes (*) - Dat dere (*) - Round about midnight (*,+) - So tired (+) - My funny Valentine (+) - It's only a paper moon (+) - Noise at the attic (+) - Moanin' (+) - I didn't know what time it was (+) - Blues march (+) - Night in Tunisia (*,+) - Lost and found Laserlight 36128 (2-CD set) Kozo's waltz - unidentified title - The theme - Note : Entire concert also on RTE 1502. (*) These titles on Laserlight 36128-2 and (+) these on Laserlight 36158-2 (2-CD set) entitled "Paris Olympia 1961 (2nd concert)". ____________________________ And yes, you're probably right about the 2CD sets restoring ... what's on Vol. 3 (I just had a closer look, no more puzzlement) is the final cut of disc one of the first 2CD set/concert and the entirety of disc 2 - so if these 2CD sets restore the sequence, the single discs volumes had it all jumbled up! Vol. 1 above has the rest of disc one of the first set/concert and most of part 1 of the second 2CD set/concert, so I guess Vol. 2 has the final cut of that disc (It's Only a Papermoon) and all of disc 2 of the second set/concert (Noise in the Attic, Moanin', I Didn't Know What Time it Was, Blues March, Night in Tunisia).

Are there any box bargains currently available?
king ubu replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
No, don't give on that one...keep it on your "must have" list! Wonderful set! Got lucky a few years back, finding the vinyl box for 30 something euros (a gamble, as it was an online order - but all was good). -

Don't think so ... the universalmusic.it site is messy ... but after all the discussion about these sets, we really should start a dedicated thread and try and put together a list in the opening post! -
seems to be true indeed: http://dothemath.typepad.com/dtm/2014/03/rip-ralph-penland.html

Bertrand, there were to 2 disc sets (that is in the Laserlight editions, the third on CD, I assume) ... this has been discussed elsewhere on this board a few weeks or months back. First concert (first CD edition conver displayed): http://www.allmusic.com/album/in-concert-olympia-may-13-1961-mw0000627538 Second concert (third CD edition cover displayed): http://www.allmusic.com/album/olympia-may-13th-1961-second-concert-mw0000534608 The second generation of CDs were all single ones (as far as I know) and looked like this - Vol. 1 of first concert: http://www.allmusic.com/album/live-olympia-5-13-61-pt-1-mw0000526637 I am puzzled though by this "Vol. 3", for which allmusic gives a tracklist that matches neither the "first concert" nor "second concert" 2CD sets: http://www.allmusic.com/album/live-olympia-5-13-61-pt-3-mw0000528131

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
king ubu replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I was sweating some there ... several of the ones went OOP before I had sent payment (I asked them to put some away, needed to think over what exactly to order - and where to find the pennies ) .... glad to report it all arrived safely ... went to pick it up at the post office first thing Friday morning and took the sucker to work with me). Last night: disc one - excellent! now, Al Harewood memorial listen, including some (or maybe, eventually, most) of this: -

I know I'm in a small minority here, but I love my rusty sucker! Shipping costs: https://www.amazon.it/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201349180#GUID-140AD14F-D4E3-4C52-A28A-09FF77344451__SECTION_BE58919656AD4E6EB58584FF8742C091 (I guess that would be 10€ then, or 15€? not sure how far they go, weightwise, with the initial 10€) -
Sad news. First heard Harewood on those great "Up at Minton's" recordings by Stanley Turrentine (with the mentioned Parlan trio and Grant Green). Always loved his touch!

Anyone care recommend anything by either Conrad Bauer or Steve Swell the latter is a total unknown to me.? Thanks See the three I pictured for Bauer ... he's amazing live, too! (Johannes is good, too ... but at least on one occasion when I caught him live he seemed more like a yokel ... but their common group Doppelmoppel is worth hearing, live they put on a tremendous show - two bones, two guitars .... don't have anything by that band on CD though). As for Swell, I don't know him too well, but heard him live in a great concert lacking audience ... that was the Swell/Ullmann Quartet and I bought their CD ... not sure those who know Swell better than me consider this a good point of entry, but to my ears, it is:

@ubu : shadowy in the sense how long it took btw which protracted steps had to be taken to make this release happen ...... I see! Wasn't aware that these hadn't been out for a long time ... @ mikeweil : yes - definitely worth a listen !! Planning to check them out eventually! But having just bought the fine Bilson box recently, I'm in no hurry.
-
The same sale as has been going on at prestoclassical for a while it seems ... so it's possibly triggered by Universal?
-
the other Bauer is a weirdo ... Conny is the real thing! highly recommended!
-
shadowy ones? I think there's nothing shadowy about the Gulda recordings - they were made in his private studio. And they're good! Enjoyed my first listen to the Bilson set a lot (and in the meantime also got his Schubert sonatas box, although I was quite unable to find any reviews online).

Computer Gurus: sleeping and auto start-up
king ubu replied to GA Russell's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I know .. and I do get them! But when I'm away, somehow it doesn't work and it falls hard asleep wihle heating and fanning like crazy ... not sure what goes on there, but I must check the settings and stuff again and more closely (just had this again yesterday). But usually (if I see it, the systray icon that is) I do just as you describe ... and yeah, I think the updates were actually already running, prompted by me - but I went to bed before they were done, and wasn't there to do the restart that was required ... and then that falling asleep happens, when I'm not there to either hit the "restart now" or "restart later" thing that pop up. -
talkin' 'bout respect, Poppa Lou doesn't have too much of that to give away to all the junkies he had to play with and all the junkies whose playing he didn't and doesn't get ... Poppa can be a major nuisance and it really spoils the fun for me more often than not ... but yeah, decent player that rarely excites me but as has been stated above, he led many a great band a few of his rekkids are pretty darn good (the samich one with Baby Face, "Lush Life" too, the sputnik one ... and yeah, just about ever organ disc - at least from the Blue Note years - gets an occasional spin here as well), but gee, he does seem bitter and clueless when he talks music ... http://www.smithsonianjazz.org/documents/oral_histories/Donaldson_Lou_Interview_Transcription.pdf (I've not yet tried to read through it all)

Computer Gurus: sleeping and auto start-up

I only have this when Windows runs updates while I'm away ... it usually asks you before it does a re-start, but I guess if you're away for hours, eventually it just does it ... or not really, since it will be black and running (getting hotter than if it actually runs regularly, for whatever reason), and all I can do is keep the power button pressed until it goes off completely. After than, I need to wait a moment (a minute or so) and then it will boot again and while doing so telling me it's finishing some windows updates (it does NOT go into safe mode or tell me it had a crash or anything, although I just actually crashed it), and sometimes it even automatically re-opens whatever I had open. Not sure if this might be what happens with your machine, GA, but it might. This happened maybe five times in the past four or five months, always when some major windows updates were running on days I wasn't home (or during the night when I was asleep). -

But how did the google car fit in there? And are these the final pictures taken by a camera in front if the car, whilst in back, it tore down everything? Seriously, looks like a good place to check out ... wonder if I deserve the bastardly honour of being their best swiss customer? -
Are you savant, enthusiast, casual or indifferent re music?

that was my first thought reading the thread title ... but then I'm sure computer knows better what I really am. -
That Newport album was on CD, in Verve's LPR series, 2002 (mini LP, I think it was around a bit later as a digipack, too): http://www.discogs.com/Gigi-Gryce-Donald-Byrd-Jazz-LaboratoryAnd-Cecil-Taylor-Quartet-At-Newport/release/3538739 It's still around in Europe, for instance here: http://www.amazon.de/At-Newport-Gigi-Gryce/dp/B00006FR6G/ There's also a CD-R on demand edition, but I'd trust the above link to be the actual CD.

Are free jazz ringtones really free?
king ubu replied to Larry Kart's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
be careful, free ringtones might be devices that listen to you whenever they're not ringing ... or some such I made my own, fiddling around with some filters and stuff (using some funk tracks .... I also made one using the opening of Ayler's "Ghosts") -
