  1. I guess it's legit in Europe, similar to TCB's Swiss Radio Days Jazz Series. Sound ist usually good. Found the Adderley somewhat muddy in that respect. These are all professionally done radio recordings I think (and there's Chet with Twardzik, too). The listing on jazzmessengers is nearly complete I think (items out of stock will disappear from searches).
  2. If you happen to be in Florence, there's the Twisted Jazz Shop in the Oltrarno part (other side of the Arno - Borgo S. Frediano, 21R) - not cheap at all, but excellent selection! It's right next to Santa Maria del Carmine (with the Bancacci Chapel), which is one of the must-see places anyway ... and you can then go for "trippa" (chitlins kinda stuff - if you're into this type of food, it's amazing!) at Il Magazzino, just a couple of hundred meters from there (I also tried the fantastic lampredotto at Il Nerbone in Mercato Centrale - took me a while in there to find the stand, but it was more than worth it ... check out this site if you're into it: https://www.visitflorence.com/eating-and-drinking-in-florence/florence-street-food.html)
  3. Yup - the one on top is the nicest of these, comes with a full booklet with lots of comments (statements by musicians, press clippings) on the controversy ... the middle ones (single discs) usually have no liner notes/booklet at all, just a basic digipack with a flap to cover the disc, the ones at the bottom are cheap but very much okay - they come as two regular jewel cases inside a cardboard box and with generic short notes (one folded page with large-print notes inside). Of the middle ones, I guess there would be two more volumes for the October set, and same for the bottom version. Those are also sometimes sold separately ... So, @Rooster_Ties, if you have a chance, aim for the top version. The lastest edition is this one here: This will have some okay notes, but not as extensive as the top version from the early/mid-nineties. And just in case, here's the Amsterdam release: Probably easiest to buy at jazzmessengers - plenty of other goodies in the series: http://www.jazzmessengers.com/en/98989898/complete-catalog-of-the-label-dutch-jazz-archives
  4. Zurich is on TCB (and was on Storyville's shady sub Jazz Unlimited and is now on Storyville itself ... but the TCB is sonically far superior imo). Dragon has (had?) the Stockholm, and as with the Paris (which is on Frémeaux now) also offers the October set with Sonny Stitt (a whole other band with strong MD and Wynton to boot). The Dutch Jazz Archive has a similar set with the Amsterdam concerts (where the April set is kinda mellow/tired). Beats me why Scheveningen (afternoon/early evening gig on same day as Amsterdam - the amazing version of "So What" was included on the Anniversary edition of KoB). Surely will buy, but just as surely will keep the two previous four disc sets from Paris and Stockholm ...
  5. On my way to the post office to fetch mine!
  6. Just in case, the 1959 Paris set by Horace Silver is out on CD now: https://www.amazon.com/Live-Paris-February-Horace-Silver/dp/B01FUYRA2G/ (replace "com" with "de", "fr", "it" ... it's pricey over here though - just about to give in an order....)
  7. Why, it's only July I want that shirt, too, but merikin sizing beats me.
  8. Yup. At least on CD offer the whole shebang.
  9. Nice indeed! I've had it for close to 20 years by now, I think ... and it has been a favourite for all this time and will continue to be so!
  10. I'm not very enthusiastic, all things considered ... it's a fine release, musically though, no doubt. Points to quibble with: - would have been nice to have the full sessions (they even created masters edited from two takes in one ore two cases - not including the original takes then) - basically this is a listening edition, not a critical one - but the session is sketchy and the 83 minutes contain quite a few bits anyway, so why not give us the full package? - there are few quite long (3-4 minutes) breakdown takes omitted that I would have loved to hear - the one included rehearsal is really just about Art Taylor giving his utmost to *not* get the beat that Monk wants him to play ... not all that intriguing - there is not much with Barney Wilen, alas ... one track (no master, nothing included) was rehearsed with him (and Monk and Sam Jones), would have loved to hear it, even if it went nowhere - the discography at the end is somewhat difficult to read (and difficult to relate to the tracklisting But yeah, it's good, I will listen again, and some day I might sit down and read the extensive liner notes.
  11. Uncalled for. There are times and other times, times for work, times for reading, and maybe I find time to dig for CD-Rs, too - just not on command, I'm afraid.
  12. Just ordered some more from the earlier batch ... anyone has a listing of all the reissues? Two batches so far, right? (New one on July 12, according to CDjapan)
  13. She has a concert scheduled here in September ... the night before the Rolling Stones (not the same venue though). Missed her last fall, didn't hear any reports, it was an all-women-combo she appeared with at that time.
  14. Ordered, merci bien, Olivier! Not sure when I'll be reading it, but it certainly looks cool. And having just heard Urs Leimbgruber perform (in duo with a guitarist from Paris, whom I hadn't known before at all, Pascal Marzan), I added the Leimgruber/Demierre/Phillips book to the order
  15. Same here ... except I let a few sets slip by in the past years (including, alas, the Venuti/Lang).
  16. Maybe too obvious, but have you checked the zoom? Usually in the "view" menu section ... browser may save/remember your settings, so closing and opening may not do to re-adjust to normal size.
  17. just in case ... worth checking with the source: http://www.challengerecords.com/products/119686483124/
  18. Okay. Hate that, thanks for the warning!
  19. Thanks Lon! That's the one where I consider replacing my euro crap edition ... maybe the Dorhamses, too. The Turrentineses and Roach I have will do just fine, of the Clark I have an earlier Japanese reissue.
  20. I guess that's the same all over ... and those same forces that scream for everything to be "something that’s practical and useful" are the ones that keep complaining that nowadays educational system does not produce "practical and useful" graduates any longer. Will take a few more years if not decades until the capitalists discover the mistake they keep pushing society to make, I'm afraid, but it's a sorry-ass state for sure. Everything gets boiled down to that "practical and useful" aspect, and whole generations (I guess were' into the second by now) with a university degree will not even learn the most basic (and most important) thing, namely to be able to evaluate things on their own, act on their own, take responsibility for their deeds and all that. So basic I guess in nowadays marketing speech it's simply forgotten, but the lack of this quality strikes hard. And sorry to hear about Roscoe ... but coming at it from a different (and probably way too yurpeen) angle: At his age, shouldn't he be able to retire from teaching (that is: if he wants) and have at least some kind of pension coming from this?
  21. Hm .... somehow I feel they have gone the way of bloating things up a bit by adding too many pictures and stuff. Not critisizing the quality liner notes, mind me. Also, at least the copies we get over here seem to have lesser quality paper used, and on top of that bootklets aren't always really cut and stapled in right angles (like, front half and back half don't really match), and with this OP set, the booklet is half a centimeter too small and bumps around inside the case. Really weird, and really not what I expect from Uptown. And I'm mentioning this now because, alas, the OP set is the worst so far in this respect (I think I still miss one or two from the past years, but mostly have the recent releases). But hey, most important is the music, and from my first impression, it's really good! And it's cool to have more by this band, there's not enough OP and there's never enough JR Monterose (though I found his Uptown a slight disappointment, measured by my probably exalted expectations).
  22. When I asked, Scott had in on the list of boxes to re-appear ... but as has been mentioned, without a specific date yet.
  23. Got my big Mosaic shipment ... or rather picked it up at the post office as I wasn't home when they tried to deliver it yesterday ... arrived fast, was packed well, and even slipped through customs. No complaints whatsoever, but I guess I never ran into much of the heartache that some seem to have had when Mosaic changed their shipping method. I've got all bases covered now (hoping the Benny Goodman will return, though, that one's still missing), between the recent jazzmessengers order (Ella/Webb and Basie/Young #2) and this new one (Bee Hive, Savoy, Bing, Jazz Icons). Gotta save some now Have made it halfway through the James P. Johnson and enjoyed that bumpy (hey, it's 20s music, right! I need more of that) trip quite some, so far!
  24. I'm still not sure what happened to the Kitchen Cabinet and why I never got a reply about a faulty track that I can't even re-download to figure out if it went broken on my end ... Not a big fan of this track-by-track approach, and not sure inhowfar it makes much sense, but then I'm one of the dying breed of CD buyers, so ignore my judgment.
