  1. Added to say: the "old" Fantasy boxes usually did included these tracks, to offer complete albums (such was the case with the Dolphy box, at least). The Rollins box omitted some tracks as well, though, and that one came out before the big Concord flush.
  2. I never managed to find the big box at a good price (got plenty of others back then, from zweitausendeins, though). Anyway, I'm happy with the four Concord boxes (fourth being the Miles Quintet box). What's missing are a few tracks without Coltrane: the Quinichette feature from "Cattin'", the trio number from "The Cats", and plenty of Ammons from "Groove Blues" and "The Big Sound" (where Coltrane was only present on a few numbers, playing not very noteworthy alto). Also one of the four Red Garland albums was a bits-and-pieces one, with two quintet tracks, a quartet track with Trane also released on an Art Taylor album (and included on the second Coltrane box, as that Taylor album was one of those jam kinds of albums - or at least the folks at Concord seemed to think so), and a trio track (that album is either It's High Pressure or Dig It, too lazy to check now).
  3. That's very sane behaviour... I often behave quite insane when it comes to Mosaics sets. That's very sane behaviour... I often behave quite insane when it comes to Mosaics sets.
  4. Katz is terrific! And going back to visit the Chico Hamilton Mosaic for the compilation I plan to make, I realized how broad his range is! He opens and closes the compilation as it looks right now, and has more tracks in between... 1. 5. Thanks for the recommendation, Tom! I recently got his two hatOLOGY discs, but have yet to listen to them...
  6. Nah, you won't Seriously: the Peggy Lee stuff there is glorious! Luckily, both this and the HRS have been around here for a long time, so I'm not pressed... but I can't keep those oaths, either, much of the time...
  7. Got the disc today, thanks a lot!
  8. As far as I understand, the Sony ones (US only) were dangerous. The EMI ones (yurp only) aren't dangerous but they have "errors" (to prevent us from stealing our own music or some such...). They still turn up in the sales bins here, but most of them have been around in non-CC versions by now as well.
  9. Ah, thanks, I have the old versions of the Blakey and the Silver and recently got a Euro-Jamal (the 2004 or so reissue, didn't see a more recent one, was there one in the new Sony cheapo series without liner notes? Those with the beige borders?), the Getz seemed of little interest, there's so much Getz around (and I have dozens of his discs). I've been unable to rip those cactus discs from EMI, but I'm not using iTunes... EAC didn't work.
  10. Gerry Mulligan - Jeru Bob Brookmeyer - & Friends Woody Shaw - Stepping Stones Dexter Gordon - Manhattan Symphonies I think that was the whole batch. In fact the last ever jazz reissues coming from Sony (except for Miles and Duke and Brubeck and other commercially viable stuff). Maybe there were others in that batch. Also, this time it was the US versions that were "dangerous", while the Euro versions seem to have been regular CDs. (edited to make a single post of this quadruple or quintuple post... org sucks or late!)
  11. I listened to some Abdul Wadud and Friedlander, but I think I'll keep it swinging...
  12. I have some of those Conns... I guess they're OOP by now and I sit on these silly crap discs
  13. I'm just trying to compile a disc with some groovy cello tracks for a kid who plays cello... My pre-selection includes: Ray Brown: Ain't Misbehavin' and Rock-A-Bye (from Jazz Cello) Ron Carter: Eclipse, Warm Canto, Yes Indeed (from the Dolphy Prestige box) Sam Jones: Sack O'Woe & Work Song (from Nat A.'s Work Song), Deep Blue Cello, No Greater Love, Over the Rainbow, 'Round Midnight (from his own three Riversides) Fred Katz: Cockeyed Optimist, Granada, Katz-Up, Music to Eat By, Pluck It, Stella By Starlight, The Sage (from the Chico Hamilton Mosaic) Oscar Pettiford: Oscar's Blues (from Vienna Blues) Doug Watkins: Andre's Bag & Soulnik (from Soulnik) Eldee Young: My Baby, Tennessee Waltz (from Ramsey Lewis' Bohemian Taverns & The In Crowd) what sayeth thou?
  14. Lon, I've got the European reissue a few months ago (but it's buried on the new stuff pile somewhere, has yet to be played). These new reissues come with a small beige frame around the cover, it's kind of a cheapo series with no liner notes, just a four page (actually one page, fold) booklet with bare-bones info. Fine enough for me, as I finally found it! (Other releases in this series include Brubeck, Garner, Ellington... seems to be some "great albums" series or whatever...)
  15. My references to track #s were relative to this new set, as listed on amazon. Thanks for clearing this (also to mjzee). I thought you were referring to a different edition of the complete RCA box!
  16. still waiting for my copy to be delivered... hope it will make it before the silly commercial season is over...
  17. Wow, that's great! Let's hope they bring back the goodies!
  18. So are there different versions of the box around? And as to the "debate" on alternate takes and outtakes etc: there's some pretty good stuff on those other albums (The Alternative Sonny Rollins"), including a "52nd Street Theme" clocking in at just under a quarter of an hour, and an almost 13 minute version of "Trav'lin Light"!
  19. I'm a bit confused about Sangrey's posts above...I have the 90s 6 CD box (black, similar design to the metal spine Miles boxes, but no metal spine). Disc 3 there is "Our Man in Jazz" (#1-3) and the three tracks from "3 for Jazz" (#4-6). "Don't Stop the Carnival" is on disc 1 (#7, #1-5 are "The Bridge", with #6 the sessions for "Our Man in Jazz" begin). "Brown Skin Girl" is on disc 2 (#4), and there's no alternate of "Yesterdays" listed. In fact, the only "Yesterdays" there is is from the "Sonny Meets Hawk" album (which is #1-6 on disc 4).
  20. I'm just pissed that Concord has deleted so many OJCs (though I bought 'em like crazy in the past few years), that BN is not bringing back some missing pieces (such as the Cliff Jordan album) and their older stuff (Meade Lux Lewis, Art Hodes...), and that Universal is only doing these silly Originals (although I keep buying them, even those that miss tracks that were included on earlier CD versions). For these losses, the European boots can't make up! Although I confess buying them (most recently Fresh Sound's fine Lateef 1957 box, two thirds of which I've had before of course, and Lonehill's John Graas and Illinois Jacquet series).
  21. It would be nice if they'd bring back some rarer stuff, wouldn't it? These can be found cheaply on Amazon Marketplace...
  22. Do post some about these in the other thread, once you've heard them! I think I have the Jelly Roll material (or some of it - on a Chrono Classics), but other than that the only one of these I have is the Bix...
  23. Yes, that's what I thought seeing the line-up for the Byrd track!
  24. sorry my scan turned out so bad... I couldn't upload it in better quality and only just noticed it's unreadable... 1. Ella Fitzgerald - Squeeze Me (Lou Levy, René Goldstein, J.C. Heard. July 8, 9, or 13, 1958) 2. Donald Byrd - When Your Lover Has Gone (Walter Davis, Doug Watkins, Art Taylor. July 11, 1958) 3. Sacha Distel - All for You (Martial Solal, Pierre Michelot, Kenny Clarke. July 12, 1958) 4. Christian Chevallier - Dream Time (Fernand Verstraete-t, Georges Barboteux-cor, William Boucaya, Hubert Rostaing, Armand Miginani, Jo Hrasko-sax, Pierre Cullaz-g, Michelot-b, Christian Garros-d. July 12, 1958) 5. Martial Solal - Special Club (Michelot, Clarke. July 12, 1958) 6. Stan Getz - East of the Sun (Solal, Michelot, Clarke. July 12, 1958) the disc clocks in at 23 or 24 minutes, so all titles are between 2:40 and 5 minutes.
  25. I've got a 2 year subscription for my birthday this April... I can't keep up reading it all, but I think it's quite a bit more interesting than any other jazz publication I can find at news shops here (including Downbeat of course). They cover quite a broad spectrum of jazz, and every now and then, they have these "Dossiers" (or had? Not sure they had one since the merger with Jazzman) with lots of photographs. The disc seems to be all music that's NOT on the official 2CD set (which I still need to buy), so it's very welcome! And plenty of Solal, too!
