The good friday massacre
Dave James replied to Van Basten II's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Did you play? I did about 10 years in Portland, just local city leagues. Love the game and loved playing it. Too bad it doesn't work so good on TV. Seeing an NHL game in person is an unmatched kick. I've had the good fortune to see quite a number of Canuck games in Vancouver. I would imagine you've seen your share of Les Habitants. Maybe even at the old Forum. I rue the day Portland did not land the Penquins. My understanding from talking to folks who were pretty well positioned was that we were just a hair away from getting them here in Stumptown. My Lordy me. How great would that have been? Up over and out. -
The good friday massacre

VBII, So how would one who took 10 years of French between grade school, high school and college but who can barely say "bonjour" go about accessing other archived hockey games on this website? I would be particularly interested in games involving my Red Wings. Merci. Up over and out. -
I agree with Dan. Vets in Manhattan have to be about as expensive as it gets with the possible exception of Beverly Hills. We had our oldest cat done a couple of years ago and it was in the $500 range, but we live in Hillsboro Oregon. Still, a second opinion never hurts. Somehow I doubt the same UCR (Usual Customary Reasonable) guidelines exist in animal world like they do in ours. Here's a great dental hygiene tip. My brother raises Leonbergers and knows his stuff when it comes to pet care. There's a product on the market made by Wysong called DentalTreat. It's a canine/feline food additive. It comes in powder form so all you do is sprinkle some on your pet's food once a day and that's it. Believe me this stuff is the real deal. We have two dogs, a Leonberger and a Newfoundland/Lab mix. Their teeth are movie star white and completely devoid of tartar. Up over and out.

great baseball names
Dave James replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Speaking of Harry "Suitcase" Simpson, I came across another big leaguer who moved around a fair amount, "Available" Jones. Anyone familiar with Memo Luna? I was so enamored of his name, I bought his baseball card. The Boyer family was burdened with bad names. Clete's brother was named Cloyd. My all time favorite, bar none, though, is Van Lingle Mungo. Trivially speaking, are folks aware that John Berradino, the movie and television actor (small part in Hitchcock's North by Northwest and a long running role in the daytime soap General Hospital as Dr. Steve Hardy) played in the majors for the Browns and the Pirates in the early '50's? Although I've been a Yankee's fan forever, in the late '50's and early '60's, my National League team was the Reds, or Redlegs as they were more commonly known then. I still have baseball cards from the 1959 Topps series of all the Reds players including Bob Purkey. He was one of those B list guys who was still a terrific pitcher. Guys now would kill for his ERA. BTW, the Minnesota Twin who played all nine positions was (and I'm sure I'm butchering the spelling) Zoilo Versalies. Up over and out.

A-fucking-men to that. She is possessed of one of the worst voices I've ever heard. The only way her presence in the band could possibly be rationalized is if she came as part of a package deal. If they wanted Keith, they had to take Donna. Up over and out.

BEACH BOYS concert memories
Dave James replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I saw them twice in distinctly different configurations. The first time had to have been in '64 or '65 at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis., Oregon. That was the original band with the striped shirts and everything. Wish I remembered more about the concert, but I was probably so awe struck that my memories were all but wiped clean. The second concert was at the old Paramount Theater in Portland. That had to have been around the time of their Holland album (a very underrated effort IMO). As much as I hate to admit it, my overriding memory of that show is the fact that Billy Joel opened. Not that I like Joel that much, but at the time, no one had ever even heard of him. It might have even been pre-Piano Man. Up over and out. -
Recent Down Loads And Additions From E - Music
Dave James replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous Music
With regard to the Sackville releases available on E-Music, I can strongly recommend Ben & Buck. I bought the CD up in Canada years ago and always thought very highly of it. Nothing earth shattering, just a consistently well done set of music. Up over and out. -
Big CCR fan here, mostly of their early recordings. I was fortunate enough to see them live at the height of their powers here in Portland. I believe The Grassroots opened. Like others, Susie Q and I Put A Spell On You still fascinate me. Quintessential air guitar material. If you count yourself in their corner, I would recommend giving John Fogerty's newest a listen. Not for nothing is it called Revival . Lots of the old CCR sound threads it's way though this one. Far and away his strongest solo effort. Two Z snaps. Up over and out.

For those of you who have the Hampton Mosaic, what's the deal with all the vocals? I was sorely tempted to pick this one up when it first came out, but after I perused the "set list" I was put off by the number of vocal tracks. Frankly, I wasn't even aware Hampton sang. Is this a good thing, a bad thing or someplace inbetween? Up over and out.

Just curious if anyone else ever heard a Beatles tune called You Know My Name, Look Up My Number? If I recall correctly, it was the B-side to the single release of Revolution #9. Up over and out.

Chas, Thanks for the help. I'll keep you in mind when I spin the first disc on this TT. Up over and out.

I bought a Dual 1226 on eBay last August and I'm just getting around to setting it up. I have a Grado Gold cartridge that I'm going to install, but the wiring diagram in the instructions is a bit mystifying. Can anyone tell me to which pin one attaches the white, red, green & blue wires? Is the wiring pattern the same regardless of the TT or the cartridge? Thanks for the help. Up over and out.

I was aware of Smith's injury and I guess when something like that happens, one shouldn't be too surprised when the body gives out, but this saddens me greatly. There was a period of time in '65 and '66 when the DC5 was my favorite band. I was teaching myself to play drums at the time, and while it doesn't get much more rudimentary than what Dave Clark was doing, it was still fun to be able to keep up. I never thought people gave Smith enough credit for what he brought to the table. He was a terrific singer, certainly one of the best from the British Invasion. I think he didn't get the recognition because the band didn't do anything very fancy. They just played basic 4/4 rock and roll. But, boy, did they do it well. Up over and out.

NFL chat thread
Dave James replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Good pickup at a halfway decent price. Asante was talking bigger money, but Philadelphia is a well managed club; and they don't mismanage the cap. Of course, this means that Lito Sheppard will be traded. To New England perhaps? Latest rumor has the Eagles shipping Lito out to Arizona for Larry Fitzgerald. Or possibly moving Sheldon Brown from CB to Safety. Puuulleeease get someone on the outside who can stretch a defense. With McNabb's career in the twilight phase, if the Eagles don't get him a go to guy by next season, you can forget about it. Even though I hate saying it, Terrell Owens is the best thing that ever happened to them as long as you limit his influence to what went on inside the lines. Up over and out. -
Best Baseball Pitcher of All-time
Dave James replied to Brownian Motion's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I hit against Wayne Twitchell in Babe Ruth ball. He went on to a pretty fair career with the Philadelphia Phillies. I once stood in a batting cage and dialed it up 95 just to see what it was like. What it most reminded me of was facing Twitchell when I was 15. I also pitched against him. At the time I couldn't throw very hard, but I had a pretty good 12 to 6 yakker that I made the mistake of throwing to him three times in the same at bat. It was that third one he hit. I think there's a fair chance that that ball has not come down yet. Up over and out. -

If you're talking over the course of a single season, I'll take Bob Gibson in 1968. A 1.12 ERA is almost criminal. Up over and out. -
Music Collector Seeks $3 Million for Archive on eBay
Dave James replied to medjuck's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
I'm just about to pull the trigger, but I'm hung up on the S&H. I guess that might explain the difference between the $3 million he's asking now and the $28 million he was offered nine years ago. On second thought, I think I'll pass. Up over and out. -
The Onion once said that by the year 2100, there would only be 5 intelligent people left in the United States. While I appreciate the satiric intent, the more I see, the less certain I am that this is satire. There was a TV show on a few years back that involved contestants placing bets as to whether several "men on the street" who were about to be interviewed could answer a particular question. I mean, these were questions that were so basic, a sack of rocks would have a fair shot at answering them. Well, you can imagine what happened. Funny? Probably. Concerning? Definitely. While I prefer the original from "Stormy Weather", any Nicholas Brothers will do. If you've never spent any time in their company, check out some of the other videos on YouTube. My Lordy me. I just wish they'd been afforded the same opportunities in film that were given to the likes of Astaire, Kelly and O'Connor. Up over and out.

I was "pimping" Basso Valdambrini on the board a couple of weeks ago. They show up on Dusty Groove with a fair amount of regularity, but if you want a lot more to choose from, go the HMV Japan route. The best B-V I've come across is one called "The Best Modern Jazz in Italy, 1962. Here's a picture: I also have the B-V LP with Lars Gullin, but I need to get a new cartridge for my TT before I play it. There are also a fair number of solo Gianni Basso efforts out there. A number of them can be had on iTunes. Up over and out.

Funniest Star Trek Moment Ever?
Dave James replied to Guy Berger's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
From the first season of the original Star Trek, the episode with the rock boring entity called the Horta. The scene where Mr. Spock mind melds with the creature is a classic. It may be the first time in the series that Spock used that technique. I also think it's the first time Dr. McCoy protests one of Captain Kirk's directives by saying "I'm a doctor, Jim, not a (fill in the blank). In this case, bricklayer. I'm also partial to the card playing scene in the episode where Kirk, Spock and McCoy beam down to the planet that's run by gangsters. It's the one where Kirk is trying to teach some of the hoods how to play a game he calls Fisbin. Actually, that whole episode is pretty amusing. Up over and out. -
I don't know exactly who it is, but I can tell you they are "short" dickheads. Seems to me once a song hits about eight minutes, it converts to album only status. I had the same thing happen to me. I only wanted the song It's A Long Way There by the Little River Band, but the only way to get it was to buy their entire greatest hits package. It is maddening, especially when this most certainly is an arbitrary decision. Up over and out.
