To be honest I'm not a huge fan of late-Coltrane live releases...I used to have both the Seattle and Japan live albums but got rid of them because I found myself never playing them. I absolutely adore records like "meditations" and "interstellar space" but for some reason couldn't really dig "live in Seattle" etc. Would be curious to hear samples from this new set to see if maybe my ears are different now haha..

Love both those Pukwana Lps on Caroline! -
I have the Beirach, third world underground, ashiribad, watership down, kalaparusha, and genesis titles on Japanese LP. All of these are fantastic! I used to have "time & space" but sold it many years ago...was a bit so-so.

Yikes what a "classy" cover haha... -
Thanks for the report...the crackling is soft on my two copies as well but it sort of drives me nuts as the music on this track is so dynamic that I find the crackling quite distracting even though it is well below music level. I'm too lazy for the 45 rpm set; an audiophile friend of mine has the complete set of these and he has made me some CD recordings of some select titles including this one. I'm now trying to find a King pressing - I think this is the way to go for me. I have the Connoisseur CD of this session too. My hope is that Music Matters will issue this in their 33rpm series eventually!

I'm bringing it to a friend's place to clean it this weekend. He has a nitty gritty machine and all types of cleaning fluid. Fingers crossed! It's one of my favorite blue notes of all time...I'd happily pay $50 for a King copy and not sure what I'd pay for an original. I paid $150 for my first copy and $95 for my second. Both looked NM but sadly both play more VG+!! Would appreciate hearing back on those mono copies..maybe I need a mono issue?

After spinning a slightly noisy, but visually NM, NY USA stereo copy of Jackie McLean's "destination out" I am now enjoying a 47 w 63rd pressing of Stanley Turrentine's "up at mintons" vol.1. Sounds absolutely sublime...no crackling or surface noise and Grant Green is popping off the vinyl! -
what are you drinking right now?

"3 Monts" beer from France...one of my favorite beers along with Hopworks "organic IPA" and Good Life Brewing "Descender" IPA. -
After just listening to my second(!) visually NM stereo NY USA copy of this fantastic album I am again annoyed at the soft audible crackling in the quiet spots...particularly noticeable during "love and hate" which is the first track on side one. Both my copies of this record have a deep groove on one side and the "ear" in dead wax. Before I go insane and/or broke trying to find a quiet original pressing I wanted to ask the people on this forum who may have his album as an original pressing if they have the same issues with their copy? The vinyl has no visible marks whatsoever but a distinct soft crackle is audible! Just curious...if anyone has an absolute dead-silent original pressing I'd love to know..at least it would give me hope such a thing exists!

Very sad to hear. Absolutely loved his playing on those early Hemphill albums. I wonder if this means the "Black Unity Trio" will finally be reissued? If memory serves correctly a label in Germany was planning on reissuing it(the same label that reissued Arthur Doyle's "Alabama feeling") but the project was sank due to Wadud's objection...

I love "very urgent" and "spirits rejoice"...as well as the first two Brotherhood Lps on Neon and RCA. I used to have the 70s Blue Notes albums on Ogun but I found them a bit unfocused. The only album I kept was "in concert" with the grey/silver cover.

I saw him in a duo with John Taylor around 15 years ago in Vancouver. I knew he was old but it was still sort of a shock to see how frail he looked...he didn't sit down when he performed though. Managed to meet him before the show and he signed my "Gnu High" CD booklet!

Anthony Williams "Life Time" (blue note, King Japan) Wayne Shorter "night dreamer" (blue note, King Japan) Ketil Bjornstad "apning" (Philips, Norway) I bought a mint copy of this back in the early 90s for like $3! Definitely need to haul this out again and play it...some great music on here... -
Poor Elvin.

I have a stack of select issues of Cadence magazine from the late 70s and early 80s. When I look at their distribution catalog lists inside I just shake my head...FMP, Incus, and ICP stuff(amongst others) for like $5-10! Of course if I were even older I would have stocked up on original Blue Notes too... -
I knew he was in bad shape recently so not entirely surprised. Sad news..an amazing musician...happy to have seen him twice with Lacy and once at a brilliant solo performance at the western front here in vancouver.

I have the polydor reissue LP of the original Marmalade album; have not played it in many years but remember really liking the small group side with Dyani.
