What vinyl are you spinning right now??

Kenny Wheeler "song for someone" (incus, UK) -
This mystery Sun Ra track was really bugging me so I went back to my earlier conclusions - small group & good recording quality. So....(duh!!) I pulled out "new steps" and voila - it's "Rome at twilight"! A great track and a good reminder to dust off these Horo doubles in my racks... There..now I can rest

An excellent album Another classic...loved this band with Holland, Abercrombie, etc. It's maybe not the "best" one but it's really, really good and I play it fairly often. Underrated IMO. True..didn't mean to come across as saying it wasn't good...it is a great album and often I forget that John McLaughlin is on it which is pretty cool! -

Kenny Wheeler "windmill tilter" (Fontana, UK). This is not my favorite Wheeler record, but it's his first as a leader and sets the tone for great things to come from him. -
I still buy CDs too. Like vinyl, I find the physical object gives me a bit more 'connection' to the music as opposed to 1000's of digital files on a computer. Of course it's easier to just rip all your CDs/vinyl to a computer and just click the track you want to play but I like reading some liner notes, looking at the cover, etc while listening to an album.

What was the longest long playing record?

I have a La Monte Young record on Shandar that is nearly 80 minutes. -
A sad loss indeed but he lived a full life and made so many tremendous recordings; his music will live on. I have played his albums so many times over the last 20 years...such a versatile player..equally at home with John Stevens or Anthony Braxton as well as Lee Konitz or Bob Brookmeyer. "Deer Wan", "song for someone", "the widow in the window", "around 6", "gnu high", "flutter by butterfly"...I could go on...not to mention stuff like "five pieces 1975", "karyobin", and all his other sideman appearances with Tony Oxley or Norma Winstone, etc. RIP Kenny...will play "windmill tilter" tonight..

Sun Ra "night of the purple moon" (Intergalactic/Saturn, USA) Noah Howard "the black ark" (freedom, Japan) -
I thought track 6 was from "night of the purple moon" but after playing that LP tonight I don't think it is. Maybe from "media dreams" or "disco 3000"? Sounds like a small group session...good recording quality(for Saturn anyways)...

Over the years I've had 3(!) nice copies of that Mtume 2lp and could never get into it for some reason. Flipped all 3 of them but kept a recording of it. I actually enjoy "rebirth cycle" more...but then again it's been about 6 years since I last heard the double... -

Yeah, the Dutch CBS comes in twice as much £££ so a bit of GDR chic suited me fine. It's a fine date, one of those where evrything played just seems in the right place at the right time "Tension" is an excellent date..so is "now jazz ramwong"...both were recently expertly reissued by German CBS in tri-fold sleeve replicas of their original issues...I bought these to upgrade my 80s L&R German reissues and they sound and look fantastic. I also recommend "folk, mond and flower dream" as well as his early albums on MPS like "birds of underground" and "never let it end"...top notch stuff! Nice one yeah, finally picked it up recently for fairly cheap. It's far more compelling than I'd expected, excellent date. Yeah this one seems to be plentiful in terms of strata east titles...don't think I spent more then $35 on my mint copy. Wish all strata east titles were more in this price ballpark!! -

Guy Warren of Ghana "Afro jazz" (Columbia lansdowne, stereo)...,pulled out of the shelves inspired by Sidewinder's "rendell/Carr" selections! Still need to hear that Chitinous Ensemble album... Sidewinder - a few years ago a "hi-fi" shop had a special promotion in town here in vancouver where they had these special $100,000 speakers on display and you could bring your favorite record to audition on these speakers. I brought my mint stereo copy of "phase III" to hear on these speakers...sounded unreal! Can't remember the brand name of the speakers but yes - their price tag was around $100,000!!! Yes, good as the CDs are I always like to hear these on vinyl to appreciate the interaction and dynamism of this group. Garrick is particularly good on 'Phase III', even though he does throw in a bit of 'Maybe It's because I'm A Londoner' like a Pearly King in his first solo (only British jazz could get away with that). Is that what that whimsical little melody is from? I love that first solo of his on that track haha...interesting tidbit! -

Yeah it's a killer album for sure. My copy is a bit crackly and the cover is a pretty worn too but for less then $200 I'll take it. Really too bad that proposed reissue years ago never happened... -

Evan Parker @ The Stone

Thanks for the reviews. How old is Barre Phillips now? One of my favorite bass players! Saw him at least 7 or 8 times in the 90s here in Vancouver and even then he seemed quite old to me. Saw him give a workshop too that was just sublime...very sharp and interesting man. I've been lucky to have seen Evan Parker at least 10 times since 1993...have never seen him put on a weak performance! -

Black Unity Trio "al-fatihah" (salaam, USA). Finally got a copy of this killer album...not the best copy but it will suffice considering I got this for a small fraction of the price top copies have gone for in the past few years.
