  1. I have the set but am ashamed to say I haven't set aside the time to really delve into it. Soon...
  2. I've already placed my order. This will be a nice set, I'm sure. Glad to have it!
  3. One of the great cellists. He'll be missed.
  4. I find the recordings by Anne-Sophie Mutter with Orkis from 2006 to be very fine for my taste. Her use of dynamics is not for everyone, perhaps, but she's always tasteful and virtuosic, of course. I have the DG ASM35 boxset where they're included but they are available individually, I'm sure.
  5. I tend to agree with you. I do have it and it's an interesting release albeit a little short at 35 minutes. It's of particular interest to Vitous fans, I think, as the overdubbed arco solos really are quite impressive.
  6. I agree that those are worthwhile albums; some creative improvising on them, for sure. Interestingly, Leroy Jenkins hated the album covers and told me he thought they were "the ugliest of his career." I never really understood that as I thought they were rather distinctive. But Leroy was adamant. To each his own.
  7. Very versatile musician. Good to know he's still out there!
  8. I just ordered this from MDT who seems to have the best price around. Although it shows as being released it's still listed as a "pre-order" and it hasn't shipped. Looks like a great box!
  9. That double Japanese Trio LP set of "Paris Concert" has long been a favorite of mine. Some great performances there.
  10. In the late eighties, I was doing a lot of photography and much of it was in-performance stuff of jazz artists. I had some live shots from the previous year of Miles at the Hollywood Bowl so I approached him backstage when he played the Irvine Meadows Amphitheater. His manager and everyone around him seem scared to death of him. I gave him an 8x10 color print of the Hollywood Bowl shot and shook his hand. He was gracious and autographed another copy for me. His hand was very rough, almost like sandpaper or really dry leather. But he was very attentive and nice to me. So that's how I remember him, despite all the stories to the contrary.
  11. I recently bought this set from a Swiss seller on ebay and find it very good. Some interesting variations to familiar material. For instance, Chambers plays the ostinato on "All Blues" all on the G string. Nice effect and rather high up compared to the usual line that uses the E and D strings.
  12. I pre-ordered the Mosaic set and I have the CDs. Wonderful stuff and it's great to hear the whole session in chronological order.
  13. I got the CDs last week and I love this release for a number of reasons, not the least of which, is the previously unavailable Jimmy Garrison solos. Great stuff.
  14. Frank was gracious the one time I met him. I also had the pleasure to spend some time with his son Dweezil while working on liner notes for the "Halloween" DVD-A and I can tell you that Dweezil is a modest, unassuming and genuinely nice man. And a virtuoso guitarist, of course. Frank Zappa's music was completely unique and indelible. Don't imagine the world will ever see anyone much like him!
  15. Chick still plays at a very high level. And, as pointed out by CJ Shearn above, he's continued to grow. Amazing musician.

    Steve Lacy

The quality of Steve's musical efforts is only surpassed by the quality of the man himself. One of the true gentlemen in jazz history. He had an amazingly broad knowledge of art in general. The time I spent with him in the eighties when he was touring with Mal Waldron was unforgettable. Much love to the memory of the great Steve Lacy!
  17. I like Mehldau. The sense I got from his comments about Evans is that he was just tired of being compared to Bill. I think that's understandable. I do believe he tried to marginalize Evans to a degree and I'd bet that he might state something different now if the subject came up. I also think Bill Evans is a major figure in the jazz piano lineage.
  18. She was a fine musician. Sorry to hear of her passing.
  19. All the best wishes to Mr. Rollins.
  20. I've liked everything I've ever heard him play on recordings.
  21. The Soul Note box is very good.
  22. No idea but I think one can rule out all of the well-known jazz violinists, for the most part.
