  1. Trout Mask is an absolute masterpiece! I'm partial to Doc at the Radar Station also. I recently put Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) on the turn table for the first time in about 10 years and it still sounds good. Love the Captain!
  2. LEV is terrific, regardless of whatever one's position is as to the vocals. I prefer the "original" session w/ Shaw and Carlos Garnett, but the session with Morgan is also top-notch. I've actually grown to enjoy the vocals and find that they lend added color and dimension to the compositions.
  3. Here's a few thoughts: Donald Byrd - A New Perspective Herbie Hancock - Mayden Voyage Woody Shaw - Little Red's Fantasy Roland Kirk - The Inflated Tear
  4. William Parker's O'Neil's Porch Woody Shaw Mosaic Lou Donaldson Mosaic Andrew Hill's Lift Every Voice
  5. Absolutely agree! Stanley Cowell's Brilliant Circles is also excellent, but the sound quality is very poor. I happen to like Ayler's Going Home - it's a set of spirituals and is more straight ahead than his other work.
  6. Can anyone comment on the Nat King Cole Trio set? I'm considering this one. Thanks.
  7. Yes, I definitely recommend Blackstone Legacy. Great playing by all involved, especially Bennie Maupin and George Cables.
  8. It definitely the best outing from any of the Seinfeld alumni so far.
  9. Woody Shaw - Blackstone Legacy Lee Morgan - Sixth Sense Ike Quebec - Blue and Sentimental Steve Kuhn/Gary McPartland - October Suite
  10. Disc 1 contains One Step Beyond, but the first track is actually Hipnosis, rather than Saturday and Sunday.
  11. That's definitiely one of my favorites! Here's a few others: Invasion of The Body Snatchers The Thing This Island Earth Forbidden Planet Them Invaders from Mars The Day of the Triffids
  12. There's plenty of gems in the ESP-DISK catalog. The other Charles Tyler session EASTERN MAN ALONE is excellent as is the other Marion Brown. In addition I'd recommend the following: Noah Howard - Live at Judson Hall Frank Wright Trio Henry Grimes - The Call New York Art Quartet Frank Lowe - Black Beings
  13. "Of Love and Peace" is real good too.
  14. She can't be any match for my dear 'ol mother-in-law. Truely frightening!
  15. What's with the cover photo on the new Teagarden set? When I pulled the booklet out of the mailbox the other day, at first glance I thought it was The Complete Bela Lagousi Sessions - It scared the piss out of me!
  16. This set is a STRONG BUY (uh oh, I sound like a stockbroker)..
  17. I pulled out some of the old vinyl this past weekend and listened to Pretzel Logic and The Royal Scam for the first time in a long while. Both great sessions, but I especially love The Royal Scam. Dark, satirical lyrics and some of the best guitar solo work ever commited to record IMHO (e.g., Kid Charlemange, solo#2 by Larry Carlton). On another note, I never realized what a tremendous guitar player Walter Becker is until I watched the Two Against Nature set. He pulls off one intricate solo after another with great ease.
  18. I love Booker too! The Freedom Book is tremendous, as is The Space Book and the rest of the Book series. I also dig The Trance and The In-Between.
  19. I picked up the Shepp at lunchtime today. It's pretty cool - much different than his other Impulses. I could do without the last track with the kid though. I also grabbed the Ayler the other day and I like that much more than I expected.
  20. Oh yeah.. and then there's Archie Shepp on Impulse: Fire Music, Live in San Francisco, Mama Too Tight, The Way Ahead, On This Night, For Losers.
  21. As far as the ESP-Disk catalog, here's a few that I consider to be essential: Marion Brown Quartet Charles Tyler - Eastern Man Alone Frank Wright Trio New York Art Quartet Albert Ayler - Spiritual Unity Sun Ra - Heliocentric Worlds Vol I and II
