  1. I'm pretty sure they did work together, and even recorded a live cd.
  2. Those are GREAT! I couldn't believe the first article; not that I didn't think Jimmy could be so articulate (well maybe a little of that ) but that he would be so forthcoming. Crazy baby!
  3. Bumped up for Conn. Let's go dude!
  4. It was great to see you and your friends, Paul. Thank you for the compliments. From my perspective, it was sort of an uneven night, musically speaking. But I've learned to just go with it, because the people listening have a different set of criteria than the musicians do. You're listening to what is actually being played, while we sometimes are too aware of what we are trying to play. Dig? That's why when people tell a musician, "You sound good tonight", the response might be, "No I don't!" So I feel better after reading your comments.
  5. Charles Lloyd Quintet: Geri Allen, piano John Abercrombie, guitar Robert Hurst, bass Billy Hart, drums Thursday 11/13 8 pm Michigan Theater B)
  6. Slightly off topic; in the liner notes to McDuff's The Honeydripper, from '61, it states that this was Grant Green's first recording session. Perhaps someone else can confirm or deny that, but what's interesting is that by that time, Grant's thing was pretty much fully formed (I love his solo on "Whap!"). So we don't have the kind of growth spurt with Grant that we see with Larry.
  7. I'm pretty sure they did, I just wanted to find out what the timeframe was. I found the Larry Young thread, but that linked article seems to be long gone.
  8. I've got that book right here, but there's no index, so I'd have to read the whole thing to find any reference to Larry. Seems like there was some mention of the two of them practicing together in that newspaper article Kevin linked a while back.
  9. I really like trumpet with an organ combo, and I don't know why it hasn't been explored more (hello Trumpet Guy... ) Larry Young's Unity with Woody Shaw, is an excellent example. I'm sure there's more.
  10. It would be great if we could hear from someone who was close to him around this time. This was the time of the Coltrane classic quartet, which certainly had a profound effect on a lot of musicians of the time. I don't really know his story all that well, but I sure would like to learn more about him.
  11. "In football, everybody's down."--George Carlin Football sucks, Paul. Wanna fight about it? Meet me at the Bird of Paradise this weekend.
  12. Do you mean no luck finding the track, or the CD? It has to be Pursuance; as far as I know, that's their only collaboration on record. There's one or two tracks on that disc that match your description.
  13. Check out the panels in the upper right and lower left corners. It's like those vases/faces drawings!
  14. Don't forget the TURBANATOR!!
  15. Larry Goldings, Sam Yahel, and Dan Wall are my three favorites out of the younger cats. For Yahel, check out the album called Trio, with Peter Bernstein and Brian Blade. State of the art IMO, and I prefer that stuff to the Elastic Band w/ Redman. Although Ya-Ya3 was pretty damn good too. Yahel is also on some recent CrissCross dates, one with Ryan Kysor that will probably be smoking. You can do a search for him at their website. Also look there for Peter Bernstein's album Earth Tones, with Goldings. I'll leave the history of the organ to more qualified individuals. Paging SoulStream....paging B-3er....
  16. That is a great quote Jim. "Chords screaming at me."
  17. Thank you, Lazaro.
  18. Those guys you mentioned are all great players, Mike. We've been fortunate to have some contact with them (excepting Kysor) through MSU. BTW, who was playing bass--was it Rodney Whitaker?
  19. Wow -- Joe Diorio on that album too! Crazy stuff.
  20. Glad you like that tune Matthew. I really appreciate hearing specific comments like yours. Thanks again.
  21. Great stuff, all of it!
  22. I like the more pastoral stuff on Sunday mornings too. Bach, or maybe Edgar Meyer, also Pat Metheny Group, or some Hindustani music. A walk in the woods and a batch of blueberry pancakes usually rounds out my Sunday morning ritual.
  23. You could vote for "Organs are great for rollerskating rinks, and that's it!"; the only selection without a vote thus far...
  24. Impulsively, or compulsively!
  25. Welcome aboard, Herb! Nice to see another guitarist on the forum. B)
