  1. Big Al strikes again ... XTC (and the albums you mention) totally kick ass!!! Eric
  2. Big Al and BFrank, I picked up the live album on Rhino on a lark and love it. They sound great - raw and in your face. Among other things, they play a wicked version of "Satisfaction". If you like MM, you will love this! Eric PS Lloyd did play on several M Sweet CDs ...
  3. .368??? must be the wi-fi network I am on ... Eric

    Roberta Gambarini

Hmmm, Jazz1, sorry to pile on, but:
  5. 31 bids so far ... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...4&category=1172 Amazing ... Eric
  6. No doubt - when this does arrive, it should be a keeper. I can wait ... Eric
  7. I like the cover. I think the sound quality of the music is fine - actually pretty good considering the recording circumstances. There are a couple spots where it is rough, but who cares. The MUSIC kicks ass!!! It really is fun to listen to Eric
  8. Indeed. There is only one true new record store left in KC and their jazz selection and prices are pretty bad. I buy almost everything online these days - you even get the worlds best used CD store with Amazon. I used to go to Tower in NY and SF on business trips 10-15 years ago and loved the experience. Decent prices, great selection, imports out the wazoo. The internet has changed all that ... Eric
  9. There is also a Warne Marsh CD in this series that is excellent. Eric
  10. Those are touching words Tom ... hang in there ... Eric
  11. I continue to be mystified that "Andrew" by Andrew Hill has never been out on CD. Glad to have my scratchy lp though ... Eric
  12. I am spending the weekend there ... never gone "jazzing" in Phoenix before - any recommendations? Thanks, Eric
  13. I listended to "Two Sides of ..." last night - what a great album. I think Wlson's playing really is distinctive and nice. Another Ayers/Wilson combo is the first album Ayers ever did - on United Artists and called West Coast Vibes. It is a quintet with Curtis Amy on tenor. What a killer album for Blue Note to re-issue! Eric
  14. Awesome news!
  15. I have SOLD a few things for stupid prices that I never thought I would achieve. A Joe Farrell CTI CD for $40 comes to mind ... Eric

    Sonny Fortune

I hate the use the "U" word, because about 99% of jazz musicians are IMHO, but I really think it is sad that Sonny Fortune only has 1-2 albums in print. I happen to be listening to a burn I made of his A&M lps and they are really, really nice. BTW, the All Music Reviews of these things are way hosed at 2 stars each - yeah there is a clinker of two, but they are mostly great 70s modal jazz. I think his Blue Note stuff is also very nice and is worth searching out. Any other SF fans out there and/or recommendations? Eric
  17. Claude, Yes, it was the late 80s release for the Monk/Trane. Eric
  18. I have the Monk/Trane set and it seems like a nice improvement, with Trane esp vivid. I also have the Wes ("Incredible ...") and sadly it is not that much better. But, this one has always sounded kinda lousy to me, so maybe a bad test case. Anyway, I do plan to dip my toe in for selected titles again. Eric
  19. Thanks - think I will spring for the 99 version. The 90 version sounds kinda lousy to me ... Eric
  20. I have the 1990 version with the three bonus tracks. I see there is a 1999 version with both the stereo and mono versions - is it worth my while to upgrade? Eric
  21. I have the Ron Horton - I think Kurt Rosenwinkel plays on it (or maybe that was the Phil Grenadier). Nice CDs. I think FSNT puts out good stuff. I sort of view them as a Criss Cross type label. Eric
  22. funny Lon, snagged those a week ago (inspired by this thread of course) Eric PS - Elmore James does in fact kick major butt too ... I got into all this music about 10 years ago ... it has been fun to pull out/listen to all the CDs since the inception of this thread PSS - Another guy who I really enjoy is Son Seals ... more of a 70s guy and the guitar tone is not quite as perfect as some of the above guys, but a great listen nonetheless - Chicago Fire is my favorite ...
  23. YES - it is the early stuff and is very, very tasty. From there, it generally becomes more "rock-oriented", whatever that means I have an EMI set (may be out of print) that collects the "Shelter" recordings. Sure, it is not PURE blues, but it is close enough for me and Freddie is all there, vocals and playing-wise. After the Rhino, it might be easier to just decide what to avoid, if anything. Eric
  24. This board totally blows the BN board away. It really feels like home Eric
  25. DAMN ... after scanning parts of the Dowd report, triple fuck him! Eric
