btw, below is the original cover for Night Glider. Dusty Groove has it for $25 or so as a Japanese import, but you can find elsewhere as a budget reissue for $6 - $7 (different cover though). Groove did three lps for Groove Merchant - the third is "New Groove", which I think I just snagged used (I say I think cause the documentation sucks). Again, DG has it from Japan for 25 clams ... ConnSeries, I would say it compares well to his Prestige stuff. The personnel are not particularly well identified, but as I hear it, it is a smaller group, with guitar and sometimes tenor (and sometimes conga). On a few tracks I hear electric piano, not sure if that is Groove or someone else. I grabbed them kind of expecting the worst and was very pleasantly surprised. Tunes and "feel" are occasionally a little poppy/dated sounding, but this is really a minor quibble. Even "American Pie" cooks, although it is a little short. It is followed by "St. Thomas", so that gives you a feel what these are about. I burned both CDs on to one, so I now have my personal Groove groove-fest whenever I want. I doubt anyone would be disappointed ... quite the contrary in fact Eric PS - Just check AMG - their ratings of 2 and 2 1/2 stars are hosed. I would give 'em both no less than 4. AMG does list personnel for Night Glider. Also, the Doug Payne site says they came out in 1972/1973.

Got my check the other day and then proceeded to rant at whoever was within earshot (think it was my 5 yo) about what a complete waste of time it was for the AGs to go after this. Or were they just the conduit for the checks - was this brought by private attorneys? Anyway, the American system of justice at its worst, IMHO. They don't have anything better to do??? Eric PS - Spon - are you on the KS or MO side? The AG is KS is a loon ...

For some reason, I decided to check out "American Pie" and "Night Glider". Both of these originally came out on Groove Merchant, I believe. I found them both through half.com. I was half expecting (pun intended) some overly self-conscious "funk", but discovered some very stanky funk instead. Not particularly cerebral , but outstanding!!! Eric

big trouble ... they now have a secure checkout process (means they store your address and credit card info a la amazon) that was previously my only form of restraint Eric -
wonderful, thanks Eric

Can anyone comment on this version? Which tracks are on the CD and DVD respectively? http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...&cart=178287555 Eric

Brandon - presume you were pulling for the Horns? I bet it was a fun game, although I was a little po'd with the outcome At least it sets up a pretty good Texas/OSU game next week. Hook 'em, I don't like OSU!!! On the basis of Psycho, I picked up 21 Singles and happen to be listening to it right now. Kulu, your are right, they also sound great without the fuzzed out guitar. This stuff is right up my alley ... how did I snooze on them back in the day? Oh yeah, I was in my "post-punk, nothing but jazz phase" (which thankfully I have broken free of) Eric

Just grabbed this one over the weekend: GORDON BECK QUARTET Experiments With Pops A perfect example of why the British jazz scene of the late 60s was so exciting -- as Gordon Beck works here with a young John McLaughlin, in an album of surprising delights! The format is, as the title states, "experiments with pops" -- late 60s soul and pop hits, given a really dynamic twist! Jazz (CD) PLUS ... I snagged a copy of Don Patterson's first lp on Cadet, "Goin' Down Home". I would guess their "fill rate" over the years has been 90%+. I stopped by their location 4-5 years ago in Chicago. I would highly recommend that anyone passing through town check them out - eclectic doesn't even begin to define their inventory I seem to remember the place is owned by some relatively well off guy who was perhaps subsidizing the operation a bit. True or not, this really is a neat spot for us jazz heads, both online and in person. Eric -
for whatever it's worth, I have found that shopping at Amazon UK for stuff OOP in the US is not too bad I got Psycho Candy and English Settlement (XTC) for $31.30, including postage to the US. Eric

I picked up the CD from Amazon UK ... Eric

Is this the one with Eddie Daniels? I think I made a burn of "good Freddie stuff not on CD" that included a few tracks from this? Never seen it on CD though ... Eric
-
OK, OK, found it at amazon ... it's on the way the guy really is clever and outrageous Eric

I snagged this after this thread first appeared ... and I like it!!! All the descriptions are apt, esp the one from DrJ - Brian Wilson through post-punker shreader. Perfect! Eric

hmmm ... can't find the DVD anywhere ... help? I have only seen his show a few times, but I find it to be very biting and spot-on. Would love to have a DVD ... Eric

I caught a few of the episodes on Comedy Central and then sprung for a DVD of the fist two seasons. It is a total scream. It is not for the meek or for children, but man it is sharp. Eric -
I snagged this one too - echo the previous comments. I also really like the new Phil Grenadier on FSNT. Kurt Rosenwinkel plays guitar on it ... it really is a fun CD to listen to. Eric

BTW, what is the take on the Duke of Stratosphere (sp?)? I have that CD but have never been able to get into it. Anyone have any favorite tunes worth drilling into? Eric
-
but Al, it's so stupidly GOOD It does have a slightly annoying quality to it (that song), but I have really grown to like it. Good record overall. Eric
-
Lon, I think he does it with Joe Strummer? Have you heard Strummer's version (from his new CD). Very nice, as is most of that CD (Streetcore). Eric
-
you might want to try and snag one of the American CDs used on amazon for a taste I have the first one and come back to it often - it is a blast to listen to I have been waiting on this set, just to find a good price used Eric

Mark Turner is very nice, not so "in your face" Eric

From a business perspective, having profitable artists like Jones allows the jazz guys to get a "free pass" from time to time. The beancounters will lay off and with any luck, that will mean the sustainability of the reissue program. For me, that is a good thing. The jazz guys may or may not capitalize on that opportunity, but at least it is there. Remember, this is the label that post-Sidewinder, opened many an album with the obligatory "funk" tune. Hardly a purist move and not all that different from what is going on today in the grand scheme of things. Plus, at least the pop artists (Green, Morrison, Jones) have achieved respect and artistic integrity in their own fields. Eric

I saw the policy clarification at AAJ over the weekend when this board was down and had the same reaction that the thread-starter here had - wow - that is petty. Point has been made elsewhere, but this is a very, very small corner of the world we are spending time with and it does not seem to make sense to censor each other. Plus, try as you may, you can't really regulate human behavior at this level. I feel sad for the AAJ administrators because I think this will only have a negative impact on their site. Having said that, this continues to be a great spot. For me, it reflects the "real" human interactions I have - mostly civil, mostly intelligent and mostly interesting. Sure, people get passionate and pissed and say things they wish they hadn't from time to time. But whatever ... it is REAL and it is fun. Eric
