  1. A second thumbs up on the Woody Shaw set. I agree there is a bit of a 70s vibe to it, but not at all in an overbearing way. Perhaps it is because this is the only music I really had a chance to listen to contemporaneously, but I really love this set. It is mostly original music (by Shaw and his bandmates) and I find it to be quite memorable. The playing is also first rate and Woody had some nice sidemen (Gary Bartz, Carter Jefferson, Mulgrew Miller and Joe Henderson, among others). The intro by Cuscuna is also quite moving. Easily in my top three Mosaics (and I own a bunch). Give it a second chance Eric
  2. I like Ya-Ya's ... more or less a greatest hits from this period, plus some Chuck Berry tunes. It is their best live album at that. Sympathy blows away the studio version! Eric

Her trio with strings is really nice - and I usually don't go for that sort of thing. Without Words, I believe it is called. OOP, but it shows up. Eric

Playing with Fire is one of my all-time favorite CDs. It is a blast! Eric
  5. Hopefully so. btw, the link to volume 6 above is actually the David Murray DVD - the Hubbard is volume one. Eric
  6. Jim, Adam Scone is in the house ... and you are dead-on ... the vibe is perfect. Wouldn't call it mellow per se, but it is definitely not a screamer. Just mature feel-good music which is interesting and certainly not dumbed down. Eric
  7. Wow - that blows!!! Immoral in my book. Eric
  8. The Who!!!!!!!!!!! Brandon - did you know they played prom at Shawnee Mission South in the sixties??? Eric PS - Can anyone recommend some Kinks?
  9. Rooster, There is now a place in KC that stocks Rega tables - Sound Advice near the Plaza. Run, don't walk Eric
  10. Tom, I have seen a few at Recycled Sounds in the new lp bin. Nothing too wild and no AH, I am pretty sure. Eric
  11. This stuff is great jazz. There is excitement and you don't feel compelled to "like it" simply because it is "innovative". Very solid. Eric
  12. Don't know, other than I have seen these around in KC too ... Eric
  13. Amen. I really enjoy "Black Codes" and the live record from Blues Alley, but after that it got a little stiff for me. "Citi Movement" has a bunch of nice moments, but his trumpet playing has not moved me in 15+ years. I certainly don't hate the guy or his music, but it really does not move me. And it isn't just Wynton - there are a lot of folks who seem to be playing it safe. Fortunately there are 5X more who are not and those are the folks I seek out. Eric
  14. Thanks for the rec Jim - just picked it up. I have been buying power pop from these guys for several years - good outfit. Eric
  15. I am a financial guy and most of the fraud I've seen over the years involves 1) someone who does not need the money and 2) greed. This is a classic case. Fraud *is* hard to prove, so that is why the other charges exists. Similar to nailing guys like Al Capone on tax evasion back in the 1930s. Eric
  16. kh1958 - You are exactly correct. She got nailed for the coverup, not the crime. Something else worth remembering ... early in her career, she worked as a trader on Wall Street. I think she knew exactly what she was up to and at least they got her on obstruction. I am a hardcore capitalist and it pisses me off when people do stuff like this. She will get exactly what she deserves. Eric
  17. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...486&style=music Does anybody know this? This company also has a Mal Waldron DVD (with Woody Shaw and Charlie Rouse) and one by Art Farmer. All of these look pretty nice ... Eric
  18. A guy I played football with in high school and I had a great affinity for music. At the time (late 70s) it was punk rock. We went off to different colleges and one day a bunch of cassettes arrive in the mail - by Miles, McCoy and Wes Montgomery. Somebody had turned him on and he returned the favor. Been a rabid fan ever since. Eric
  19. Also slightly off topic, but I would appreciate it if someone could assemble a list of Lockjaw recommendations. He is one guy I have never really checked out. I happened to be in the Jazz Record Center in NYC on Tuesday and the local radio station was all Lockjaw as it was his birthday ... so my interest is up! Thanks in advance. Eric
  20. Yep, they are pretty much the gold standard now for keeping things in print. The consensus is that it could not get better - only stay the same or get worse. As a private company today, they have the flexibility to ride through tough times without changing their policy - that might change in the future. Eric
  21. I have many of the "rainbow" series (of which this was a part) and for the most part, the vinyl is lousy. Go for the CD! Cannot remember about bonus cuts though ... Eric
  22. Hey Bev, Great recommendations - thanks. Gyroscope is next on the list! Eric
  23. very interesting from a business perspective ... maybe less so from a fan perspective Fantasy does an incredible job putting stuff out and keeping it in print, cannot imagine anyone doing it better Eric
  24. Combo of 3 & 4 above. Get it off your chest! Eric
