  1. Picked this up from (where else) Dusty Groove (the bastards). Anyway, it is a Beck-lead quartet and they play the pop hits of the day (Sunny, Good Vibrations, I Can See for Miles, etc.) in an all-acoustic setting (well, except for McLaughlin). Sure the heads are a little cheesy, but this really is a neat little record. I bought it for the early McLaughlin and he does sound great. The overall vibe of the CD is nice and there is a good mix betrween upbeat and ballady stuff. Worth checking out. Eric PS - from Dusty Groove - they are actually spot-on in their promo (errr, review): "A perfect example of why the British jazz scene of the late 60s was so exciting -- as Gordon Beck works here with a young John McLaughlin, in an album of surprising delights! The format is, as the title states, "experiments with pops" -- late 60s soul and pop hits, given a really dynamic twist by the group -- which also includes Tony Oxley on drums and Jeff Clyne on bass. The tunes are all familiar -- "Sunny", "Norwegian Wood", "Monday Monday", "I Can See For Miles", and others -- but they're done in a mode that has free soloing, angular twists, and these really edgy guitar bits from McLaughlin -- never outside, but with a style that's quite refreshing, giving the material! Great stuff, and one of those records that keeps us digging through the Brit scene of the time!"
  2. This is a good CD - includes a couple of Joe Henderson tunes that you don't see all that often (Homestretch from "Page One" and Soulin' which is on Duke Pearson's "Prairie Dog"). Eric
  3. Funny, the stock market works the same way Eric
  4. Which one is that Rooster? Eric
  5. picked up a used copy off ebay - his 3rd Milesstone lp quintet with Woody Shaw, live in Baltimore I would advise seeking it out if you like either Bartz or Shaw!!! Albert Dailey on piano, all acoustic, smoking modal-oriented hard bop wonder why this is not on CD??? Eric
  6. very interesting thread ... I own a bunch, but listen to them infrequently ... just keep waiting for that free three hours to really dig in, but it never seems to arrive ... although things have generally become more available over the years, I started buying them for stuff that exisited only on lp if you could find it (at very high prices) case in point - the Jackie McLean set plus, buying Mosaics have allowed me to discover artists that I previously ignored for example - the Tina Brooks set - before any of this stuff was out on CD, I bought the Mosaic set - barely knew who the guy was, but was taken by the passion with which Cuscuna described it in some ad copy - I was stunned (and still am) at how nice this stuff is I see the Curtis Amy and Carmell Jones selects as being in a similar vein plus, they have issued stuff that folks have just slept on - the Woody Shaw for example I love those guys Eric
  7. (provided I can figure how to do it), will I download the Cellar Door stuff? probably will I buy it officially once Columbia gets around to issuing it? most definitely to each his own, but I can sleep at night Eric
  8. backordered at CD Universe ... Eric
  9. maybe a bank??? have you asked Hiroshi if he can get the stuff? often he can even if not listed on his web site ... Eric
  10. yep Monk Blue Note got it for Christmas 1984 or 1985 (read some ad in downbeat) Eric
  11. I have become addicted to buying used through Amazon. Having said that, I will buy new if it is a "must have" (NOW) or if I want to directly contribute to the artist. I keep a bunch of clean jewel cases and sticker remover on hand to make the used CDs look good as new. Eric

btw, below is the original cover for Night Glider. Dusty Groove has it for $25 or so as a Japanese import, but you can find elsewhere as a budget reissue for $6 - $7 (different cover though). Groove did three lps for Groove Merchant - the third is "New Groove", which I think I just snagged used (I say I think cause the documentation sucks). Again, DG has it from Japan for 25 clams ... ConnSeries, I would say it compares well to his Prestige stuff. The personnel are not particularly well identified, but as I hear it, it is a smaller group, with guitar and sometimes tenor (and sometimes conga). On a few tracks I hear electric piano, not sure if that is Groove or someone else. I grabbed them kind of expecting the worst and was very pleasantly surprised. Tunes and "feel" are occasionally a little poppy/dated sounding, but this is really a minor quibble. Even "American Pie" cooks, although it is a little short. It is followed by "St. Thomas", so that gives you a feel what these are about. I burned both CDs on to one, so I now have my personal Groove groove-fest whenever I want. I doubt anyone would be disappointed ... quite the contrary in fact Eric PS - Just check AMG - their ratings of 2 and 2 1/2 stars are hosed. I would give 'em both no less than 4. AMG does list personnel for Night Glider. Also, the Doug Payne site says they came out in 1972/1973.
  14. Got my check the other day and then proceeded to rant at whoever was within earshot (think it was my 5 yo) about what a complete waste of time it was for the AGs to go after this. Or were they just the conduit for the checks - was this brought by private attorneys? Anyway, the American system of justice at its worst, IMHO. They don't have anything better to do??? Eric PS - Spon - are you on the KS or MO side? The AG is KS is a loon ...

For some reason, I decided to check out "American Pie" and "Night Glider". Both of these originally came out on Groove Merchant, I believe. I found them both through half.com. I was half expecting (pun intended) some overly self-conscious "funk", but discovered some very stanky funk instead. Not particularly cerebral , but outstanding!!! Eric
  16. big trouble ... they now have a secure checkout process (means they store your address and credit card info a la amazon) that was previously my only form of restraint Eric
  17. wonderful, thanks Eric
  18. Can anyone comment on this version? Which tracks are on the CD and DVD respectively? http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...&cart=178287555 Eric

  20. Brandon - presume you were pulling for the Horns? I bet it was a fun game, although I was a little po'd with the outcome At least it sets up a pretty good Texas/OSU game next week. Hook 'em, I don't like OSU!!! On the basis of Psycho, I picked up 21 Singles and happen to be listening to it right now. Kulu, your are right, they also sound great without the fuzzed out guitar. This stuff is right up my alley ... how did I snooze on them back in the day? Oh yeah, I was in my "post-punk, nothing but jazz phase" (which thankfully I have broken free of) Eric
  21. Just grabbed this one over the weekend: GORDON BECK QUARTET Experiments With Pops A perfect example of why the British jazz scene of the late 60s was so exciting -- as Gordon Beck works here with a young John McLaughlin, in an album of surprising delights! The format is, as the title states, "experiments with pops" -- late 60s soul and pop hits, given a really dynamic twist! Jazz (CD) PLUS ... I snagged a copy of Don Patterson's first lp on Cadet, "Goin' Down Home". I would guess their "fill rate" over the years has been 90%+. I stopped by their location 4-5 years ago in Chicago. I would highly recommend that anyone passing through town check them out - eclectic doesn't even begin to define their inventory I seem to remember the place is owned by some relatively well off guy who was perhaps subsidizing the operation a bit. True or not, this really is a neat spot for us jazz heads, both online and in person. Eric
  22. for whatever it's worth, I have found that shopping at Amazon UK for stuff OOP in the US is not too bad I got Psycho Candy and English Settlement (XTC) for $31.30, including postage to the US. Eric
  23. I picked up the CD from Amazon UK ... Eric
  24. Is this the one with Eddie Daniels? I think I made a burn of "good Freddie stuff not on CD" that included a few tracks from this? Never seen it on CD though ... Eric
  25. OK, OK, found it at amazon ... it's on the way the guy really is clever and outrageous Eric
