  1. Over in the CD Baby thread, Jim recommended a CD by Adam Scone which I picked up. I also posted the following over there, but could not figure out how to quote myself "cross thread" Anyway, what I said there probably belongs here: "Digging a little deeper into the Adam Scone vibe ... I noticed that both he and the alto guy on Scone's CD (Ian Hendrickson-Smith, who also has a CD on Sharp Nine) have a band called the Macktet. So ... after listening to a few samples on their site, I snagged this as well (the "Liftoff" CD, they have a few). This is a very cool CD, with a little more grease and grit than the Scone CD. I could not find this at CD Baby (which of course is the point of this thread ), but I was able to get it from the K-Pasta website (the Macktet's label). Definitely worth checking out." Eric

  6. got five ... missed that 2nd of ... Eric
  7. Yeah, great season though. GT was tough and we seemed to make some mistakes down the stretch. Oh well, go Okie State and we should be awesome next year!!! Eric
  8. Last night I attended a show in KC by the Charles McPherson/Tom Harrell quintet. It was part of a Charlie Parker celebration here in KC. Stanley Crouch started things off with a 15-20 minute lecture on Bird that was at times rambling, but mostly insightful and humerous. But, I digress ... This is the third time I have seen Tom Harrell, with the first being 21 years ago with Phil Woods. For those of you that have seen him play live, you are of course first struck by the physical mannerisms brought about by the medication he takes. It is quite moving and I think heroic describes it quite well. But pretty soon you forget about all that and just get swept away by his playing. This is one of those instances where I fear words will fail me, but I take away an amazing sense of beauty from listening to him. It is not fragile, on the contrary it is a masculine sort of beauty. The show was all Parker tunes and so we were treated to some good ole' wicked bebop (along with some ballads). Some of the tempos flat out flew and even on the faster tunes, the beauty is still there. Amazing. Regardless of your experience with him on record, see this man play. You will be moved and have a ball! Eric
  9. It does exist and it is in KC. Our very own Rooster Ties is contemplating going to work for them ... see another thread. Eric
  10. The avatar says it all ... Go 'Hawks!!! Eric
  11. Funny, I just went through a similar experience. Just received the Mulligan and Elvin Jones sets after going a few years without. They really are a treat. For me, these two sets were a bit of a gamble, but as usual, the Mosaic guys know quality stuff and I am loving them. I've been buying about one a year since 1985 ... once an addict, always an addict Eric
  12. I think this thing smokes and started a mini-Groove-sance at my house! Eric
  13. I've had very good luck with their web site and they ship quickly. Eric
  14. Picked this up the other day. It is only ~ 30 minutes, but it is priced right. The music totally kicks my ass - great Grant Green, Leo Wright is nice and good playing by Coleman too. Fun CD!!! Eric
  15. A second thumbs up on the Woody Shaw set. I agree there is a bit of a 70s vibe to it, but not at all in an overbearing way. Perhaps it is because this is the only music I really had a chance to listen to contemporaneously, but I really love this set. It is mostly original music (by Shaw and his bandmates) and I find it to be quite memorable. The playing is also first rate and Woody had some nice sidemen (Gary Bartz, Carter Jefferson, Mulgrew Miller and Joe Henderson, among others). The intro by Cuscuna is also quite moving. Easily in my top three Mosaics (and I own a bunch). Give it a second chance Eric
  16. I like Ya-Ya's ... more or less a greatest hits from this period, plus some Chuck Berry tunes. It is their best live album at that. Sympathy blows away the studio version! Eric

    Renee Rosnes

Her trio with strings is really nice - and I usually don't go for that sort of thing. Without Words, I believe it is called. OOP, but it shows up. Eric

    Bobby Shew

Playing with Fire is one of my all-time favorite CDs. It is a blast! Eric
  19. Hopefully so. btw, the link to volume 6 above is actually the David Murray DVD - the Hubbard is volume one. Eric
  20. Jim, Adam Scone is in the house ... and you are dead-on ... the vibe is perfect. Wouldn't call it mellow per se, but it is definitely not a screamer. Just mature feel-good music which is interesting and certainly not dumbed down. Eric
  21. Wow - that blows!!! Immoral in my book. Eric
  22. The Who!!!!!!!!!!! Brandon - did you know they played prom at Shawnee Mission South in the sixties??? Eric PS - Can anyone recommend some Kinks?
  23. Rooster, There is now a place in KC that stocks Rega tables - Sound Advice near the Plaza. Run, don't walk Eric
  24. Tom, I have seen a few at Recycled Sounds in the new lp bin. Nothing too wild and no AH, I am pretty sure. Eric
