  1. That sure is a great story!
  2. And Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays, youse big lugs.
  3. I like to think it's Kwanza every day!
  4. I can say the same...... What, do B&W movies make your eyes hurt? (No joke, a girl I kinda sorta dated said that to me, we didn't see much of each other after that) Seriously, if you 2 ever do see the film just go into it with an open mind. Don't think of what everyone else has told you about it....Man, first we hear there are people on a jazz board that don't own Charlie Parker cds, then this! (though the Charlie Parker thing is more shocking)
  5. Jim, I was about to PM you, since I thought you hadn't responded about the surgery. Glad to hear you were doing so well after the surgery! Smart move trying to get the weight off. I had surgery in 1999, and was more or less pain free(except if I was on my feet for 2 or more hours at a time) Then I blew another disc just before last Christmas. It took 2 months for that pain(and true loss of leg strength) to go away. Why am I rehashing all this??? Well, I managed to mess my back up last week, get this, just getting out of the chair in front of my computer. I think it is more muscle spasm related, than disc related, but like you I have put on some weight. I saw my Doc just before I hurt my back and after the weigh-in, I asked what I weighed back in 05, before my Mom died. Yikes! I have packed on 27 pounds, not a good idea for someone with a history of back trouble! I have been trying to work out more, but one can always do more, and just want you to make sure you stick to strengthening your abs, and realizing that many of us must just have a weaker "wall" surrounding the gooey center of our discs than others do.
  6. Man, 4.5 Million views! That has to be close to the record! And speaking of Diner, that blonde Mickey did that to was hot!!!!!!!!!!!
  7. If you are a fan of early jazz, you need to check this one out! From 1928, with Joe Venuti, Jimmy Dorsey, and Miff Mole showing off! Does anyone know if the drummer is Vic Berton??? I'm just blown away. Oh, and that banjo player!!! Thrash Banjo!!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjVP81wSZ4w
  8. Sal, I hope you have a very merry Christmas in SC! But, since it's supposed to be 48 and rainy here in Atlanta, I wouldn't pack a whole bunch of bermuda shirts!
  9. Alexander, you seem to be forgetting all the MGM cartoons, Tom and Jerry, Droopy, et al....Surely you wouldn't dream of calling those crappy animation! Also, I am sure his family would be glad to know that while you wished him harm, in was only in a general way!
  10. Django!!!! Film quality is crap, but it really is amazing to see him play with such a "Handicap"
  11. From a film short,'The Saturday Night Swing Session' this 1938 clip features Bobby Hackett,Pee Wee Russell,George Brunies,Eddie Condon,Dave Bowman,Clyde Newcombe and Johnny Blowers. ... (more) I could see how Georg's goofin' around all the time might get on people's nerves! I thought Bobby Hackett was still playing guitar only in 1938, need to look that up.....
  12. Man, I would have sworn it was, but it isn't! Screenplay was by Preston Sturges as well.
  13. Dan, you may get out of Drew yet.... http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/ Oh, and many folks here will kill our GM if we trade away a young, cheap power hitter for an even younger, cheaper outfielder. We need pitching! We need "Gonzo" screw you AL east teams!
  14. Man, it's amazing how people can view the same music differently, ain't it??? I have to agree, the Paul McCartney tune really grates on me these days(Didn't always) I kinda like Lennon's song. I love Christmas Wrapping! (Waitresses)What's wrong with you morons??? How can one not like the Christmas Song, when Nat King Cole sings it??? They could chop the repetitive ending off, I think she had a sexy voice. I even like the little drummer boy song(The Atheists in the house seem to dislike it most of all it seems ) Heck, Rockin' around the Christmas tree is fine with me. I do have a problem with all the lame versions of the Christmas "classics" I hear on the radio these days. I feel like some sort of payola must be in effect for stations to play some up and coming country nobody warbling White Christmas, instead of Bing. I assume everyone has a station in their town that just goes all Christmas music, all the time nowadays? Man, I think there are 2-3 of them in Atlanta right now! Even with all the crap Christmas music and many a Xmas spent in retail hell, I refused to allow it to kill my love of the season. Here is a you tube give from me to you....this should make you beg to hear even your most hated Christmas song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nuNiFgcLYI
  15. On Sunday night at 8:00 PM EST , Remember the Night (1940) (Right before their more famous film Double Indemnity) Really a pretty good little comedy-drama, should be shown during the holiday season more often. From the TCM website. An assistant D.A. takes a shoplifter home with him for Christmas. Cast: Barbara Stanwyck, Fred MacMurray, Beulah Bondi. Dir: Mitchell Leisen. BW-86 mins, TV-G, CC
  16. Duke Lacrosse Controversy Home / Local & State / Crime & Safety / Duke Lacrosse Controversy Published: Dec 13, 2006 02:31 PM Modified: Dec 13, 2006 02:54 PM By Joseph Neff and Benjamin Niolet, Staff Writers A private laboratory hired by the prosecution in the Duke lacrosse case failed to report that it found DNA from multiple males in the accuser's body and underwear, according to a defense motion filed today. The lab, DNA Security of Burlington, found that the DNA did not match the three defendants, their lacrosse teammates or anyone else who submitted their DNA to police, including the accuser's boyfriend. The new evidence emerged in thousands of documents handed over to the defense in October. "This is strong evidence of innocence in a case in which the accuser denied engaging in any sexual activity in the days before the alleged assault, told police she last had consensual sexual intercourse a week before the assault, and claimed that her attackers did not use condoms and ejaculated," said the motion, which was signed by lawyers for all three defendants. "There is not a single mention of this obviously exculpatory evidence in the final DNA Security report." Three former players -- Dave Evans, 23, of Bethesda, Md.; Collin Finnerty, 20, of Garden City, N.Y.; and Reade Seligmann, 20, of Essex Fells, N.J. -- are charged with rape, kidnapping and sexual offense. The three have said they are innocent. The accuser, an escort service worker, was one of two women hired to dance at a lacrosse team party in March. The accuser said she was gang-raped by three men in a bathroom over a 30-minute period. She told nurses that she was raped anally, orally and vaginally, that one or more of the men ejaculated, and that her assailants did not wear condoms. Early on the morning of March 14, a few hours after the party, a doctor and nurse at Duke Hospital examined the woman and collected standard evidence for a rape kit: a pair of panties, hair and swabs of the woman's orifices. On March 28, the lab at the State Bureau of Investigation tested the rape kit items and found no evidence of semen, blood or saliva, according to SBI records. On April 4, after meeting with District Attorney Mike Nifong, Durham police investigator Michele Soucie called DNA Security to ask whether the laboratory could do any additional testing of the evidence, according to Soucie's handwritten notes. Dr. Brian Meehan, director of DNA Security, said his lab could do Y-chromosome testing, which is more sensitive than the tests performed by the SBI lab. The tests isolate cells containing a Y chromosome from the sample, thereby analyzing only DNA contributed by males. The lab would test the swabs and panty stains for DNA and match any results to the 46 players, the accuser and any other DNA samples collected by police. Meehan told the investigator that he "can possibly adjust prices because they would really like to be involved in case," Soucie's notes say. On April 8, 9 and 10, DNA Security found DNA from multiple males on the panties and rectal swab from the rape kit; none matched the lacrosse players. On April 10, Meehan met in his office with Nifong and the two lead investigators in the case, Sgt. Mark Gottlieb and Investigator Benjamin Himan. On April 18 and 19, DNA Security ran tests on pubic hair from rape kit; multiple male DNA was found that did not match the players or any other sample taken by police, the motion said. On April 20 or 21, Meehan again met with Nifong and the two investigators in his Burlington office. Meehan included none of these DNA results in his final report to Nifong on May 12. The report violated DNA Security's own policies, which state that reports shall include "results of every DNA test," according to a copy of the policy filed with the motion. Citing the state's open-file discovery law and the U.S. Supreme Court's requirement for prosecutors to hand over all helpful evidence to the defense, the defense lawyers asked the judge to order Nifong and the lab to provide copies of all laboratory analyses, including those performed after May 12. Nifong did not immediately return calls for comment. Meehan said he could not comment on the case without first carefully reviewing his files.
  17. Paul, what LAL said. An excellent cd to start with. If you could ever find the long out of print Pro-Arte cd Everybody Loves my Baby, it's a very good best of cd as well. Well, a quick check of Amazon shows both cds are out of print it appears,(As are all the storyville cds! ) but available used.....the Newer ASV is still in print if you only like new cds, and it has very good tracks as well.
  18. Oh, anyone else noticing the Rock/Pop section in their stores still have tons of cds left??? Guess one of the many reasons they weren't able to survive.
  19. Well, in Atlanta the sign says 7 days left, and the cds are all 70% off. Dvds still 60%. Jazz has really been hit, was there last week, and jazz and Classical was already a former shell of itself. And even though 30 miles away, when I found out their phone was disconnected,(I called the Kroger next to them to make sure they were still open) I thought I should check them out one last time. Still keep finding weird things that I swear weren't there since I had gone thru every single jazz cd before. Like a Clarence Williams Frog and a "Robert Parker" C. Williams cd. Think it was last week that I got a Teddy Lewis Jazzy cd from Retrieval (Actually several Retrievals, only 9.99 to start, so how can you not take a chance?) Actually made a deal with my Dad, pay me back, and I'll save you the hard work of finding stuff to buy me for Christmas! can't recall everything I got, will have to report on the annual what'd ya get for Xmas thread.....
  20. Dan, if he hadn't signed, were you forevermore going to refer to him as DaisyDuke???
  21. Damn, I am sorry to hear that Chuck. I was wondering how he was doing, I recall him saying that the Cancer was getting worse, but since he had beaten it time and again(Something like 10+ years?) hoping we would see him posting again soon. My condolences to Steve's family, and friends. I can't claim to call Steve a friend, but he went way out of his way to offer advice and ask how things were going after hearing my late Mother was diagnosed with Cancer. I though about this for awhile, but I saw that I did still have some PM's he sent back in 2003, and 2004, and thought I should share them. They show what he battled, and the kind of person he was. He was battling a terminal illness, yet still wanted to help others.....If people think I should delete the pm's, I will. Rest in peace Steve, you were and are an inspiration. Another avenue..., Sep 4 2003, 09:30 PM Hi Berigan, The PM mechanism is usually my preferred way of communicating concerning personal matters, but your mother's situation has provided a rare opportunity for me to reach out to a larger group of people concerning issues that most people don't deal with unless/until it hits them where they live. I think that my posts on the public forum thus far have been general enough to be of use to almost anyone who reads it, as well being useful and supportive to you. However, now that you've embarked on a course of action (and it appears to be as good a course as one can get, at this point in time), your concerns are likely to become more focussed, individual and personal. Please feel free to share with me via Personal Message any questions or concerns that arise during the course of your mother's treatment. You may even vent, rail at the universe or share the joy. I will do my best to reply thoughtfully from experience and from the heart. I will, of course, continue to monitor your thread in the public forum. All my best to you and your mother, Steve (aka SEK) The reply a few days later.... Re:Another avenue..., Sep 7 2003, 02:50 AM Steve, This is very nice of you! My Mom has still not started Chemo yet, she needs a port? I think it is called, to be put in her chest to go directly in the heart....then she can get Chemo....so many delays! How were your Chemo treatments? Thanks, Conrad, AKA Berigan. Hi, Conrad! I've never undergone chemotherapy. All of my tumors have been relatively "low grade" (grade 2) and they have been in my brain (which, due to the blood-brain barrier, require much more chemo than tumors elsewhere in the body to achieve an equivalent effect), and my doctors have never recommended chemotherapy to me as a first option. After my first surgery, I underwent a full course of radiation, followed by a period of "wait and see". My subsequent surgeries have come after long enough intervals so that, following each surgery, there's still been a worthy option of "wait and see". If my tumor were to spread to another part of my body (uncommon with primary brain tumors) or if a recurrence were inoperable or of a higher grade (both are the usual scenarios, but so far I've been very lucky...), then chemotherapy would be the main or only option. Fortunately, chemotherapy can have fewer side effects and be more effective than it was even a decade ago. In fact, I know of a younger guy with a grade-3 brain tumor whose tumor is, for now, no longer visible, after several courses of a rather new chemotherapy protocol. His results are uncommon, but no longer unheard of. Furthermore, the main side effect he has from his almost continuous chemo regimen is a bit of fatigue, some loss of appetite, and dry skin. But he usually goes to work and still often gets to his pick-up basketball games. His results were nearly impossible not too long ago, and, given the relative ferocity of his tumor, he could be considered even luckier than me! Your mother will probably have a harder time, but the side effects should be more manageable and the potential results significantly more hopeful than they once were. I like the idea of a port to the heart, because it facilitates a more direct route for the chemo to get to the places where it needs to do its work. I see from your Organissimo posts that you get some distractions and maintain a sense of humor. A sense of humor is important almost all the time but is especially valuable when one can muster it during hard times. Steve Looking back, I should have bent his ear more, but probably didn't want to burden him, even though he sure did offer to help/listen....Last PM I got from him, at least that I saved.... Re:How are you doing?, Apr 1 2004, 04:44 PM QUOTE I hope things aren't too bad, all things considered. I still appreciate you offering an ear to hear some of my issues dealing with my Mom's Cancer. Probably should have taken you up on the offer. Everytime I thought about it, I thought I would end up writing a very long winded PM, and decided against it. She is still hanging in there. Off Chemo for awhile, now back on it. One Tumor started to grow again, while the other one shrank! Take care, Conrad. Hi, Conrad! It's very good to get your PM. I've been wondering how your mom has been doing and how you've been dealing with it. I thought that, perhaps because I've never undergone chemotherapy, you did not find it useful to stay in contact with me via PM. I do expect very long-winded PMs as part of the struggle. Feel free to "bend my ear" in the future. I'm extremely pleased to read that your mom is still around and that the chemo has been, at least, partially successful. I hope that she is comfortable and her life continues to be meaningful. I so appreciated your very thoughtful response to Ghost about his mother (in fact, you "stole my thunder"); so, I know that you try to take full advantage of your mother's continuity. I am doing okay. My next MRI and checkup are scheduled in June. It has gotten harder for me to get out and around, but my wife and friends, the music, my cat and dog, the internet, cooking, and various household chores keep me busy and sustained. It's been great to see that your mother's plight has not robbed you of your feistiness and sense of humor. It's also great to see the days getting longer and warmer here; we've been at the receiving end of the most traditional "Michigan winter" in about a decade (very frigid and gray, with *lots* of snow). I hope that things improve for your mother and that you continue to do well. Please feel free to send me a PM whenever and whatever. Take good care, Steve
  22. Rest in peace Peter. I remember him being in Hardcore(With George C. Scott) playing a pretty good creep. Since a few didn't click on the link, the Lennon friendship was mentioned, as well as a few other interesting facts.....excepts..... “He came in all hot and angry,” recalled the show’s creator, Phil Rosenthal, “and I hired him because I was afraid of him.” But Rosenthal also noted: “I knew right away that he had a comic presence.” ..... Boyle had first come to the public’s attention more than a quarter century before, in the critically acclaimed “Joe.” He met his wife, Loraine Alterman, on the set of “Young Frankenstein” when she visited as a reporter for Rolling Stone magazine and Boyle, still in monster makeup, asked her for a date. ...... Through his wife, a friend of Yoko Ono, the actor became close friends with John Lennon. “We were both seekers after a truth, looking for a quick way to enlightenment,” Boyle once said of Lennon, who was best man at his wedding. In 1990, Boyle had a stroke and couldn’t talk for six months. In 1999, he had a heart attack on the “Raymond” set. He soon regained his health, however, and returned to the series. and about that last thing, the stroke. I could have sworn he died after it, so imagine my surprise when he started to show up in films and TV again!!!
  23. Matthew, believe it or not HoRam, as he was called in Atlanta, has good stuff. When he is on, he looks like the next Tom Glavine. But, he is forever injured. If he is healty next year, he will win 12-15 games, honest! And as for Soriano, we heard reports that he only is hitting 91 in winter ball.....
  24. Well, Marcus Giles had an off season(.261) after being forced into being a leadoff hitter(Which he ain't!) still played great defense as usual at 2nd base. But, we(Atlanta) with only 4.8 million citizens-at least, are a teeny, tiny small market town. So, instead of offering him arbitration and risking paying him 6 Million, we non-tendered him. No one would trade for him, knowing that we would just cut him loose rather than pay him. Even though the fans knew it was coming, not too happy about it, to say the least. We couldn't even keep Daryle Ward as a pinch hitter, and he really wanted to play for us. Sigh....
