  1. I saw three Beatles box sets at my local Best Buy today.
  2. Hadn't seen that cover before, very nice shot.
  3. One of the sad things about this is that now when I see a Concord Group cd, I assume it will be available cheaply in relatively short order. In fact its not unknown that I'll see the most recent issue (Keepnews) of a cd in the same bins as the earlier now cutout issue. Even if I suspect that the Keepnews edition will be an upgrade I figure I can wait and get it cheap next year.
  4. Wild Jimmy Spruill
  5. A couple of pages back Bill Barton mentioned Josh Sinton and a group of his called Ideal Bread. Sinton has another band with a cd called Holus Bolus which I think is really good. Baritone, alto, bass and two drummers. In a non jazz vein I have just recently been listening to a band that rose from the ashes of Morphine called Twinemen, especially their cd Sideshow.
  6. Hi Alppila, That was at Newburry Comics, a local (to New England) retailer that also has a pretty good presence online at Amazon. At the moment there are 3 sellers at Amazon selling this set for under $16 (Newburry's not among them). The set I bought was sealed, I see the 1st two Coltrane boxes used fro 19.99 at anothre retailer, FYE. I agree that Fantasy did a great job getting their catalog out and keeping lots of stuff in print. Maybe they got out when the getting was best. If CMG's strategy is to release and delete titles within a year or two I don't see what the point of buying Fantasy was. I tend to think the first response to this thread was probably on target, CMG must have to be in a cash crunch to be dumping so much product cheaply.
  7. I believe that Newburry's has also picked up a substantial number of units from CMG as I have been seeing the older Fantasy issues and now the newer Concord issues on their shelves since the 1st blowout Concord sale. And they (Newburry's) keep coming out with different titles. Now here's another question I have. Is the profit margin greater (that is, for the retailer) on these deleted titles than on new issues? My general understanding is that the retailer only makes a couple of dollars on a new cd but that while they may only make a couple of dollars on a deleted cd the ROI is much better because they are buying deleteds for so little. As it pertains to the former Fantasy catalog it seems that dumping all these titles will make it harder to sell new reissues.
  8. I have been picking up some of the more recently issued Rudy Van Gelder remasters of dates formerly available on Fantasy. Yesterday I picked up Very Saxy for 5.99, this is dated 2008. Today I couldn't stop myself from picking up John Coltrane's Fearless Leader set for 19.99. Now as I understand it, when Fantasy owned all this stuff they kept a ton of stuff in print. Can some of you industry types explain to me how it makes sense for Concord to dump issues from last year? Is the cost of storing and stocking these cd's so onerous that they need to delete them? I can't understand how this makes any sense for their business unless Concord is getting out of the cd business altogether and into downloads only.
  9. Yet another obvious one Benny Carter with Ben Webster and Barney Brigard on Swingvile, recorded in LA in 1962 and, I think, readily available on Fantasy.
  10. Another obvious one would be Benny Carter's Jazz Giant on Contemporary. Webster was also featured on 4 cuts from 1949 on Modern under Carter's leadership recorded in LA, these are the cuts with the really obnoxious dubbed in applause (at least that's the only way I've heard them). I have those on an Official lp. Was Official kind of the Lonenhill of its day?
  11. I seem to recall Ben Webster played with Big Miller, was that in California? A brief websearch turns up this video from Art Ford's Jazz Party: http://lcweb2.loc.gov/diglib/ihas/loc.natl...67/default.html
  12. I ordered the Bud Shank Bob Cooper Select from Barnes & Noble last week after reading through this thread. Just received confirmation this morning that is is shipping, $51.24 total.
  13. Package received, thanks David.
  14. In the words of Andy Kaufman, tank you vedy much!
  15. Hi David, yes I mentioned the smaller cd's, Phillips made a device just for them called the Philips Pocket Expanium Mini Disc Player.
  16. I recently picked up a Philips Pocket Expanium Mini Disc Player. It uses the smaller sized cdr's (3 inch) and can play mp3's (up to 3 hours depending on compression) and PCM (only 21 minutes). This is different from minidiscs, a format that had great potential but was suffocated by Sony and their obsession with DRM. I have several minidisc players which I still use (most models can be found pretty cheap on ebay).
  17. Dan, is it the Texas Rangers you are worried about? While I think a division title is still an attainable goal for the Bosox, I can't see them not getting in as a wild card if they don't get the division (whoa, too many negatives). I thought this kind of negativity died after 2004, 2007. Or is this just the mark of a longtime fan who can't forget 67, 75, 78, 86 ect. (I've gotten over it myself).

    Tiny Grimes

Like Big Beat Steve I like his RnB sides from the late 40's. Another date he is on that I like is the Coleman Hawkins record, Blues Groove on Swingville. Not sure what its current status is but I would imagine it has been reissued in some by Prestige and is probably available cheap somewhere. Edit: I see the post above mine notes that Blue Groove is now out under Tiny Grimes name, the lp issue I have has Coleman Haqwkins as the leader.
  19. Regarding LaRoche v. Kochman it was noted somewhere today that LaRoche is more of a free swinger and Kochman is more in line with the organizational approach of grinding at bats and generating a better OBP. I should think the Martinez trade will be good for Masterson since starters make more money than relievers, still Masterson needs to develop a better approach to left handers. From what I hear and read Victor Martinez is not a long term solution at catcher. Tito will have his hands full getting everyone playing time. Still, the Yankees are not going to keep up their current pace. I believe the Sox are in good position to get to the post season.
  20. Joshua Breakstone did a cd of Monk tunes for guitar trio called Let's Call This Monk! on Double-Time Records which is pretty good. He tackles some of what I imagine are some of the less generally covered Monk tunes such as Brilliant Corners, Eronel, Humph, Work, and Let's Call This among others.
  21. If Allmusic can be believed, Pat Martino appears on 8 different Willis Jackson releases. I have some of them, Martino is credited as Pat Azzara on the original pressing of Jackson's Action.
  22. If you are in Providence you must check out Round Again Records on Wickenden St., the last man standing for RI record stores. Still manages to keep a decent selection of jazz and at quite reasonable prices. They have been at it since 1980 and still doing the job. Especially appreciated, not every rare item gets the Ebay treatment. Like all good record stores, you need to be a regular to get the good stuff, not because he's holding records for regulars but because Steve prices stuff to sell.
  23. I am an Adams Pullen fanatic. Glad to say also that I got to see them 3 times, 2 at the 1369 Jazz Club in Inman Square (is that Cambridge?) and once at a noon time concert in Providence. Favorite studio recording for me would be Life Line on Timeless. Also, from one of the Palcoscenico lp's is a stunning version of God Bless the Child, a big favorite. I don't think any of the studio recordings approach the level of excitement generated at the live performances I saw (excepting the mid day concert held at a building in Providence with terrible boomy sound, I have some pictures I'll try and post later). With the advent of file sharing there are quite a few broadcast performances of this group available in pretty good sound, even a video or two. I was poking through Brian Priestley's Mingus biography the other day and was checking out the discography. Has there ever been any talk of issuing the rest of the Carnegie Hall date from the early 70's where Rahsaan Roland Kirk guests?
  24. Hey Cary, it's on the Skipstone label. When I picked it up I really wasn't sure what to expect But I am happy to say it maintained my attention for all 49:09. So, do you miss RI?
  25. This is the 1st recording by Erik Friedlander as a leader that I have heard. It's cello, bass and drums. A quirky setup but the music is very accessible and swings and grooves. His website has some more coherent reviews than I can give and I think there are some samples also. Liked it so much I am now ordering a couple of things from Friedlander's previous efforts.
