    Prince is dead

Not sure if this adds anything to the discussion ....but I wanted to go back to some comments I had left out of my earlier post when I discussed Prince and Hendrix with some office mates of mixed races. One person said "Jimi played white music with two white boys for white people, Prince was a black artist....playing black music for black people".....now I guess it surprises me that Hendrix would be viewed that way by the African American community but what was said about Prince sure seems to be born out by the testimonials I am seeing these days....I guess it is to his credit that he connected with his people.
  3. Sidewinder I am glad you mentioned the Schaap moment (maybe there were two?).... Having listened to many of his broadcasts over the years.... I got such a laugh watching this in the film....something for Schaap lovers and haters alike. One other thing I wanted to say about the film. In the credits at the end it lists most performances as being by "Miles Davis" and the same performances as written by "Miles Davis Jr."....almost giving the impression that these are different people....odd.
  4. see my post above.....for me the answer is yes.
  5. I saw it on a Saturday night in NYC metro area and I was one of less than 10 in the audience.....sad.
  6. I saw the movie last night and liked it more than I expected. Cheadle does a convincing job as Miles. As the NY Times said the film is "impressionistic" but there also seems to be enough attachment to actual happenings...although I have no idea whether Miles resorted to the use of guns as much as the film portrays. The film does not skimp on and really showcases the fabulous music from several Miles eras which is always wonderful!

    Prince is dead

Well again... I might not have made the comparison had Prince not chosen to look and play like Hendrix at least on some of the limited occasions I witnessed him. Is Prince the novel or the encyclopedia?

    Prince is dead

I believe you Lon....as I said I never got much exposure beyond the Prince's pop hits .....so as I said I may be displaying my ignorance....on the other hand the Hendrix dismissals may be on the ignorant side too.

    Prince is dead

I apologize to the Prince fans for what I am about to say and probably am just displaying my own ignorance. Around the office water cooler yesterday with office mates (ages 40-60, mixed race) I was asked what my favorite Prince album was. I responded that I was not a fan because my impression based on what I was able to hear and see in the media from his guitar playing and a number of the outfits and "looks" he adopted when Prince hit the scene was that he was a Jimi Hendrix wannabe and that I would rather listen to Jimi. I did not want to take this any further because I respect that Prince's fans are in mourning but people really got very angry with me. Was told by several people at the water cooler who are serious about their music that Jimi Hendrix was an overrated gimmick-based guitar player who wrote bad songs and sang with a mediocre voice and that 100 years from now when the book of rock and roll is written there will be a chapter on Prince and Jimi gets a footnote for setting his guitar on fire at Monterey Pop. I replied that is so wrong in so many ways....but there was no convincing this crew....again a couple of 60ish types in the mix....said it was all due to an over-romanticization of the 60s causing an overrating of Hendrix... Oh well...guess I could be wrong
  11. yes Paul but I only see a reference to checks not cash.
  12. Jim Do you take cash donations? Still at the same p.o. box in Lansing?
  13. On the other hand some of his best songs were written by others....but so many great songs. I think his voice is underrated....everyone talks about the voice of George Jones which is fantastic...but not sure I like it any better than Merle's which is such a quintessential country voice.
  14. Oh shit...he was fantastic!!!
  15. what Lon said.....I will miss Gato!!!!
  16. I know that song....for a long time....I am a huge fan of most things from Tammy....very underrated at least outside of country fans IMO.
  17. His contribution to the music of the Beatles was immeasurable.
  18. Really?????....my impression was that rather than portraying Miles as the musical genius he was .....the trailer gives the impression that he was mainly a gangster who occasionally played music....it could be the white guys deserved to get shot...but my fear is that a lot of white guys will give this movie a pass based on this trailer.
  19. Stefan and Dauneiac You guys crack me up!!!
  20. I just saw the trailer last weekend....in the trailer Miles spends more time with a gun in his hand than he does with his horn........
  21. I did not know Glen was gay.....not that there is anything wrong with that.
  22. thanks Frank I do have that recording and wondered if there was a speed issue because it just sounds weird....hoping for improvement I bought Closer again when I got the 2008 remastered cd...and while the fidelity is better - as you say it doesn't sound like anything was done with the speed issue. Thanks so much for your help.
  23. Thanks Frank I would like to revisit that moment .....could I ask you the great favor to tell me at what minute and second that moment occurs in the Ida Lupino ?
