Nice photos Mark! When are you gonna post the ones from Joe's birthday, and the Jazz Fest ones?

Another discovery for me.....the second session on Miles Davis' "Collecters Items" with Sonny Rollins in the quintet. A gem of session. The group sounds really tight. Was this group touring together at the time? It sounds like it.

What live music are you going to see tonight?

Saw the Kurt Rosenwinkel Quintet yesterday. It was a fantastic show. It was my first time seeing Kurt....what an incredible improvisor he is! He had the crowd on its feet during some of his solos, which doesn't happen often at the Jazz Showcase. Mark Turner was struggling during the first set. He kept fidgeting with his horn and was looking frustrated, but he came back very strong in the second set with some really creative and intense solos. The highlight of the evening for me was a ferocious version of "Inner Urge" that went on for about 20 minutes. Check this group out if they play near you! Kevin Hayes was on the piano, which was a nice bonus. He gets better and better every time I see him. -
I wonder if it will be anything like Spike Lee's.

I was laughing nearly the whole time.....not so much at what I was watching, but because I was thinking about where/how JSngry came across this footage!

Saw him earlier in August at Comstock Park in Michigan. He was excellent, although his new band isn't as good as the one he had up until about 2 years ago or so.

what are you drinking right now?

I'm jealous! What a fantastic stout. -
Good points Alexander. Funny you make the Outkast comparision, as I was "one of those people" who stopped liking Outkast as soon as "Aquemini" came out! However, I've been revisiting them recently after an absence of about 8 years from their music, and I've actually come to enjoy "Aquemini", "Stankonia", and yes, even the dreaded "Speakerboxx/Love Below". Sorry about the change in subject......I think "Modern Times" is a great Bob Dylan album, no matter what.

Has anyone heard this yet? I liked Branford's late 80's/early 90's offerings with the trio and quartet, but I haven't really enjoyed any of his more recent releases, particularly these newer albums that all seem to be themed. This new one seems like it might just be a return to good ol' fashioned saxophone quartet jazz. I think his band is very solid, particularly the connection between Branford and Tain.

What would be a good size to get for about 1,200 CDs?

Picked up the Byrd, Griffin and Dorham last month, and I've got the McLean, Morgan, Hutcherson and Hubbard on the way. "Royal Flush" was really an eye opener. Its quickly become my favorite Byrd session. Byrd's sessions, while consistantly solid, typically don't exceed the status of "typical BN hard bop" for me, but Royal Flush is really something special.

I've seen Roy several times live. I think he's an extremely talented and original soloist, and his rhythm section burns. But I share your sentiments about Justin Robinson. Just too academic for me. He tries to play as many notes as he can in as many different patterns as possible, and doesn't really seem to be speaking from the heart. I can work with this in the live setting, but not too sure how this will work on record.

How about a tune or two from "Inventions & Dimensions"?

Cowboys have some receivers this year, but need a QB who can tell which jerseys belong to which team. MF Bledsoe threw 3 INTs yesterday to cost us the game v. Jacksonville. One more game like that and I think the Tony Romo era will begin in Dallas. Plus, you don't want T.O to start bitching, or that's gonna screw everything up.

My Bears are looking really good against the Packers so far. May be speaking too soon, but for the first time in probably two years, I'm actually getting excited watching the offense.

Squirrels eat each other sometimes. -
No doubt about that!!!

Had to think about this for a minute, but I'm gonna go wth "Freedom Suite" as the best fifties session. Edit for spelling

For the sixtes, my vote goes to "East Broadway Rundown".

Bentsy, right now, the schedules aren't all up for shows that far in advance. Unfortunately, you'll be missing Tomasz Stanko, who plays at the Hot House on the 18th. You should be able to catch a show at the Jazz Showcase that Sunday, the 15th. Not sure whose playing yet. PM me closer to your trip and I'll try to meet up with you as well, particularly if you plan on going to the showcase on Sunday.

The crazy thing is that there's a good amount of people on this board who fall for it.

Reeds and Deeds - "Cookin' " - w/ Eric Alexander, Grant Stewart, David Hazeltine, John Webber and Joe Farnsworth Dave Kikoski Quartet - "Limits" - w/ Seamus Blake, Larry Grenadier and Bill Stewart David Binney - "Cities and Desire" - w/ Mark Turner, Craig Taborn, Thomas Morgan and Dan Weiss I'm very interested in the David Binney disc. I thought his last one on Criss Cross, "Bastion of Sanity", was one of the finest releases from Criss Cross in quite some time.

I think that I agree with king ubu on this one. How many jazz tunes "steal" the changes from other tunes that came before? If you apply the same mentality to jazz, that would cut out alot of great jazz from your life.

Elvin Jones and Gerry Mulligan CJB in "Running Low"!
sal replied to Ron S's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
A couple of the final sessions (chronologically) from the box set strike me as a bit sub par, sounding a bit like they were trying too hard to ride the fusion wave. But those comprise maybe one and a half discs worth of material at most. There's still at least a good six discs worth of stellar stuff here IMO, and this set shouldn't be missed. -
And without trying to get political, I thought "An Inconvenient Truth" was very well done and quite eye-opening.
