  1. You know, I knew I shouldn't have come back to this thread...
  2. Without a doubt! In all honesty, the best use of "essential recording lists", if they are properly made up (meaning of course, done the way I would do them! ) is to check to see if you're missing something you might like. Meaning that if you go through a list and say "hey, I've got most of these, or at least a representation of them, but none of these Big Band things", and you haven't tried and rejected Big Band stuff, it might be a good idea to explore the stuff a little. I know some people only like hard bop, for example, but if that's all the jazz you've tried, a list might prod you to check out some other facets of the music. Of course, I'm assuming this is a good thing... As far as using a list of "The 100 Most Important Jazz Recordings of All Time and You're a Chump Monkey if You Don't Have Them!" as a shopping list, it just wouldn't work, unless you're just putting a shelf together to impress someone without knowing what you're doing. Like that ever works...
  3. Speaking of Hill, did I actually read that Black Fire was coming out as an RVG, or is my brain playing tricks on me again?
  4. At least use civilian ripostes from now on, Brad...
  5. My guess is we'll find out after we hit the great beyond; depending on your tastes, that would qualify as heaven or hell...
  6. Happy birthday, L.V.; glad you found the board!
  7. Wow; don't you just love it when a player suddenly 'clicks' like that for you? That's such a fantastic high...
  8. The easiest way I know of to convert dollars to euros is to order CDs from Europe with a credit card...
  9. Or those not independently wealthy, or those with any sanity remaining. Wow. Just thinking of being an "Oscar Peterson Completist" makes me quake with fear. Let's see; if I give up food, the wife, the cats, any social life whatsoever...nope; still couldn't afford it!
  10. Oops; didn't know this thread was here, so I responded on your other thread, Tony... Today a partial order from CDUniverse arrived- Jackie McLean: Right Now Spaceways Incorporated: Thirteen Cosmic Standards by Sun Ra & Funkadelic
  11. I finally read Art Pepper's Straight Life, and discovered that once I had finished, I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I was while reading it, if that makes any sense. A real eyeopener on several fronts. I've since picked up Cain's Mildred Pierce for the umpteenth time; it's an old favorite.
  12. Got a new pair of sunglasses in Santa Cruz today. I didn't buy any CDs today, but when I got home, Jackie Mac's Right Now! and Spaceway Incorporated's Thirteen Cosmic Standards by Sun Ra & Funkadelic were waiting for me in the mail box!
  13. Artist: Louis Armstrong Title: The Complete Hot Five and Hot Seven Recordings Recorded: 1925-1929 Edition: Columbia Legacy CK4K 63527 from 2000 Comment: Why? Because it all starts here. While it might not be apparent to today's listener at first (it certainly wasn't to me!), as the commercial says, "it's in there". I can't imagine not picking this one up in the first five years of a jazz fan's "listening career", and that's being generous with the time scale. Note: Do not try to cheap out and pick up one of the older recordings on Columbia; the sound quality on this set is dramatically improved, even to my tin ears. There may be a "best of" single disc compilation of this material; I don't know. (I'm having trouble finding a picture; I'll reedit later if I have better luck...)
  14. I haven't seen a Marx Brothers movie in years, but the one scene that stands out fondly in my memory is the one with Groucho, and if I remember right, Chico, arguing over a contract and finally discussing the sanity clause...wish I could remember it well enough to post it, but I'm sure I'd screw it up.
  15. Happy Birthday, Claude; keep on keepin' on!
  16. I hear you. I tried that earlier, and it works fine. It's just that I can't imagine wanting any more, you know? Who knows, maybe in a year or so, I'll change my mind and ask Jim to let me back in. And with a little luck, that will be the time that he decides it's okay to say "fuck off"...
  17. Well, for one thing, the other penny for the 37 cent stamp...
  18. You know, the sad thing about all the posts on this thread is that later tonight, Rooster Ties will log on, make one post, edit it fifty times, and fly by us again...
  19. The problem with Jazz 45s, of course, is that with the larger caliber, the velocity obtained is often enough to throw off the aim of those more familiar with the sedate by comparison 33....
  20. Couw, that is absolutely disturbing...Hey Jim; can I have this forum blocked as well?
  21. Well, I thought about it a long time, and came up with these three... 1) Eating too much 2) Spending too much on jazz 3) The Organissimo Political Forum Unfortunately, I've now given up number three, so I'm looking for a substitute. I'm torn between wife beating and crack cocaine, but I'm open to suggestions. Besides, she hits back...
  22. I'm moving to Arizona!
  23. Why does that remind me of Ricardo Montalban hawking the Cordoba?
