  1. The mind boggles... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...&category=18834
  2. And, of course, if they love you, they won't ask!
  3. Isn't that Mike Meyers...?
  4. Yeah, I know the one you're talking about. We carry it. You have to buy their extremely overpriced prepackaged coffee, I believe...
  5. Never heard of him, and alas, with my lack of cable, I guess I won't...
  6. Van's latest isn't for me, but it may be for you...$8.00 includes postage. PM or email me. Cash; check or m.o. can be arranged as well.
  7. Crap! It's the other one first? Okay....let's roll! HAPPY............................
  8. Holy shit! He's been possessed by a demon parrot! Somebody get a priest...
  9. Well...thanks for picking the artist that can get me in trouble, Rooster! First of all, as I said earlier, the idea of an "essential 100" doesn't work for me, as I'm so close to Bev's position that our discussion was like Catholics and Lutherans arguing while Islamists and Hindus listen in wondering what the hell we're talking about. I'm thinking ten (at the most) CDs to give everyone a wide exposure to the basics of the development, and then go with wheverever exploration takes you. I think several artists should be included in any jazz collection simply because they are so important to the development of jazz that you'd be missing a large portion of the picture without exposure to them. Miles, in my opinion, is not one of those artists. If forced to play the "top 100" game, I certainly wouldn't start with Miles first. (See how much fun this is? I haven't even touched on your selections; I start arguing the minute I see the name! )
  10. Perhaps is they are sincere, and intelligently expressed. Perhaps Tod was right about you (though I insist he's wrong about Aunt Bea!); I assume you're Barney Fife...?
  11. Does "etc." include cats?
  12. Take note, MGM...THAT'S entertainment!
  13. Well, that's why I think 100 is too many. I do honestly feel that every jazz fan should be exposed to certain artists. Armstrong, Parker and Dizzy, and Ornette at least must be heard for their influence on the artform by any serious student of jazz. I would argue that, therefore, at least three discs should be in every jazz collection. Would I add more names to the list and expand the "essentials"? I don't know; have to think about it. I certainly feel one would be missing something without exposure to Ellington and Monk, but I don't know... Certainly, by the time you've gotten to Evan Parker and Wynton, you're too far down the list to say essential, at least essential for everyone...
  14. I'm sure either my wife or I will pick this up; we both like Krall, but always different albums. I like the first three, then the wife took over. I had to step in for the live one, though, which I like except for the exceedingly awful final song, which my wife thinks is the only decent one on the disc. Thank goodness we have so much in common... With Costello material, sounds like this one'll be going into my budget. Sure hope so!
  15. I do think it's possible to compile a list of "essential jazz albums", but I think that list would be fairly short. Less than 100 even. And I think each "essential" would actually be a choice of several, rather than one particular item. This would be a list of discs that, if haven't been exposed to them, you're missing a key portion of the development of jazz. Example: It may not matter exactly which Charlie Parker disc you have, but fer cryin' out loud, ya gotta have at least one!! Going by this theory, I'll give credit to the compiler for including the Armstrong and Hines disc rather than the Hot Fives/Hot Sevens, but I reserve the right to sneer...
  16. Vocal Jazz shouldn't be on the list? "Ah Um" is Mingus' worst album? I was ready to rip into this silly list of "essential compilations", but as there's someone posting here that I would disagree with even more, I've lost my killer instinct! (And yeah, check out Bobby Womack!)
  17. Well, obviously blind...look at that hair!
  18. Obviously, you are not alone, Hardbopjazz... My wife's love of jazz is restricted to Diana Krall and the Getz/Gilberto CD. (In fact, she bought her own copy of the Getz, because she "couldn't find mine) on the carefully organized shelves...go figure!) She likes a few other things, but they must be mellow, relaxed, and (her words) "not crazy". I'm lucky in that our work hours are different, so I have a four to five hour block in the afternoon when I have the house to myself for jazz, "weird movies", etc. It works out. Of course, when we're both here together, we compromise. She plays her music, and I shut up. Although I must admit, I've begun to really dig the Steve Roach stuff...
  19. I find that if I draw green circles around my eyes, old video tapes are far less likely to have tracking errors. But I get some really strange looks from people...
  20. Happy birthday guy, and thanks for one of my favorite web sites!
  21. Happy birthday, shrugs, and may salt water never mar your vision again!
  22. Happy birthday, and post more! (Hey, here we expect the presents!)
  23. Shoot, I always thought this was by the recently departed "Man in Fur", Johansen Cash...
