I finished this earlier this week. Really goes well with his All for Nothing, which touches on German refugees attempting to flee the Russians in the dying days of WW II whereas Bone and Marrow looks at East Prussia before the Wall fell from a West German perspective. Now reading:

Yes, it was a terrific book.

Folio publishes some beautiful books. I have their David Copperfield which I’m making my way through.

Hadn’t heard of this set before. I’m sure it’s worth the price; very few copies on Discogs. Unfortunately I doubt it will be reissued.

One of the greats but age gets us all. RIP. His time with Art Blakey was magical. Now they all belong to the ages.

The Times has been doing this series Five Minutes that will make you love this or that type of music where musicians and experts offer their suggestions. They did one on bop last year. Today’s edition is on jazz piano. Glaring omissions: Tatum, Ellington and Bud. That’s correct. On the second 1948 session of James Moody and His Bop Men (which on subsequent re-issues is renamed as James Moody’s Modernists; not sure why), Chano Pozo sings Tin Tin Deo.

Times have changed. Prices are comparable to TPs and this seems their effort to grab some of that market.

Craft has announced that OJCs are back , at least in vinyl. They are not inexpensive ($39). “ORIGINAL JAZZ CLASSICS is back! Have you heard this one, a 1981 performance at the Keystone with Richie Cole, John Handy, Cedar Walton, Bobby Hutcherson, Herbie Lewis and Billy Higgins. It’s darn good.

I read his All for Nothing a few years ago. They both touch on the subject of East Prussia, now part of Poland.

The Bishop set is available for pre-ordering as a cd.

Gearbox does do cd releases so maybe it will show up in cd eventually.
