  1. I'd recommend Dizzy Gillespie and His Sextets and Orchestra on Musicraft. It's been reissued as part of the 3 CD Savoy set. For Musicians Only with Getz is classic, one of his best I think of the post bebop era. Also Birk's Works, a double cd on Verve, is a must in my book. Of his later work, there's Dizzy Gillespie's Big 4, which is not bad. And there's always the Mosaic from last year. Great stuff.
  2. Why shouldn't they test for weed? Players should be careful. It's not like this is an isolated occurrence but just another link in the chain of his drug abuse.
  3. Les Tresors du Jazz 1952 - The bonus discs.
  4. I guess they took this "pop" thing seriously
  5. I know it's popular but I do have that east coast bias and frankly how can you call it a sport?
  6. Well, he really didn't, because Barry has never admitted that he knowingly used steroids, or cheated on his wife, or cheated on his taxes, or "cheated the sport". I do wish that instead of the abject apology, Schilling had said something like "I misspoke about whether Barry has admitted any of his misdeeds. He has not, but the evidence of his steroid use is overwhelming and in fact he acknowledged that he used "the cream" and "the clear" from BALCO while denying that he knew they were steroids. Its up to others to decide whether his pursuit of Aaron's record is legitimate." That's fair.
  7. Does anybody really care?
  8. from Baroid. Seriously, I can't believe how much time has been wasted to justify or not justify this person. It doesn't take a genius to see he's not the same person he was with the Pirates. That head is so big, it's about to explode, and I'm not about his having a swelled head, even before he started using steroids. I also don't know why Schilling apologiized. He spoke the truth.
  9. Hope we see a brick and mortar store but I doubt it.
  10. This was on in New York last week and I thought it was fabulous. He really had the golden touch for Atlantic. A fascinating individual. A lot of the program retells his life through interviews that various people did with him before he passed away.
  11. I totally disagree. I think the game is still in denial about the steroid era. I'm hoping that he shatters Aaron's record and exposes Selig & MLB for being the hypocrits that they are. Maybe after "baseball's most cherished record" falls they will see what a mockery they are turning the game into and actually do something about steroid use. They conviently turned a blind eye to all the steroid usage for the past 15 years while MLB's owners got richer and richer. Now just w/in the past two years as Bonds has been closing in are they doing something about it. The current policy is still bullshit, imho. I completely agree with this.
  12. Up. I will try to add a few more in the next couple of days.
  13. 3.06 tonight for premium in suburban NJ. Ouch! and I have to drive to Pennyslvania tomorrow.
  14. I live near Fresno and when he pitched for them he was sterling. But his pro career [except for last year's World Series performance] has beem medeocre at best, I'm afraid. I wonder what went wrong? Perhaps the same thing that happened to Kerry Wood. When he was pitching at Grand Prairie, he was smokin' 'em left & right. Now, he's already washed up. Sad. I never cared for Weaver. Use to watch him when he pitched for the Yanks and my thought was why would a pitching-starved team like the Tigers trade him to the Yanks? It was fairly obvious after a season. Apparently Duncan was able to do good things with him last year but he was too stupid to realize that he should stay with the Cardinals.
  15. I haven't looked at this thread in a long time but I have to say I was quite surprised to see someone actually making a case for Barry Bonds. I understand we're all fans and you should be loyal to your team, etc. but this seems to go beyond that. Anybody who talks about the "overrated" Ruth has to be a little suspect I'm afraid. Pre steroid Barry was a HOF candidate. Steroid Barry has destroyed his reputation and it's enough of a travesty that he passed Willie on the HR list. Hitting 756 is a milestone that should be suspect and never celebrated until an honest athlete comes along and passes Aaron's mark. Similarly, as far as I'm concerned, the single season mark for HRs still belongs to Maris.
  16. Except they have it in both categories. Wonder if someone made a mistake. Assuming not, it must have timed out because it only went to Running Low in mid April. It couldn't have gone that fast.
  17. Exactly. There are those who criticize Roach and Roy Haynes for insufficient technique, for that matter, usually in the form of a back-handed compliment. It's nonsensical. There's "how fast and complicated can you play?" virtuosity and there's "how much incredible music can you create?" virtuosity. There's an astounding bootleg of Rollins, Henry Grimes, and Klook, recorded in Aix-en-Provence in 1959. Anybody who can fly at that level is so far up there that "technique" is a detail. I'm reminded of a conversation I overheard at a Grover Washington concert in the mid-70's. A group of beautiful and stylish young women were discussing a party they were planning to go to after the concert. This was some sort of college function. One of them was wearing denim, but that does not begin to describe how her simple outfit was supremely elegant, hip and refined. It was a work of art. But denim. "They say no jeans allowed," her friend warned her. The one in denim gave her a look. "Honey," she said, " I am beyond jeans." Great story Tom. LOL for sure.

  19. It's a terrible rag. Hasn't been good for goodness how many years. Newsweek isn't that much better either. How could you have any confidence in a mag that brought you People?
  20. When it comes to Tinnitus, I try not to look at the web. Never found much helpful. I came across a forum once and reading the posts actually got me more stressed than I already was!
  21. I have the CD version of DJ Lounge and I love the session. If I remember correctly, we had a lot of discussion about it on this board.
  22. I have the D.J. Lounge one but as a Japanese import, which I don't believe (I hope) has Move on Over. I like the D.J. Lounge quite a bit even if, as Dan says, it's one of those ordinary run of the mill Sonny sessions that he probably forgot about after he made it.
  23. I received an email from Amazon France that this cd, originally recorded on Argo, is now available. Couldn't find out much about it but ordered it, along with two of Les Tresors du Jazz compilations, which I'm looking forward to. Here's the link for Sonny, http://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B000OPP68M...4671_pe_snp_68M
  24. Brad

    Delmark

Check out Jimmy Forrest's All the Gin is Gone. It's Grant's first session I believe.
  25. I guess I don't see anything wrong with it. When you buy a cd or anything, unless the seller sold it to you at a cheap price, with the understanding that you wouldn't resell it on ebay, you have the right to do with it what you want. Now, we may not like that, but that's just the way of the world. Maybe the buyer bought the Mobley to help finance other cds that he bought? There could be various explanations.
